Be A Hero! Save A Life!

Samantha is a perfect pet, no two ways about it! This 7-year-old girl has it all: beauty, charm, and a perfect BEGINNER rating. She has been at the ACC since the day after Christmas, and truth be told, the animals who have been in the shelter over the holiday period are at a huge disadvantage. The shelter has been closed a few times, people have been too busy to adopt or foster, so even perfect pets like Samantha are slipping between the cracks and getting lost. "Lost" being a euphanism for "dying senseless deaths at the ACC," which is what will happen tomorrow afternoon if no one steps up for Samantha, tonight.

TO BE DESTROYED 1/3/14 Brooklyn Center My name is SAMANTHA. My Animal ID # is A0988169. I am a female calico domestic sh mix. The shelter thinks I am about 7 Y...EARS old. I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 12/26/2013 from NY 11212, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.   following:http://urgentpetsondeathrow.org/must-read/For more information on a particular cat, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go unnoticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

New worries about Fukushima

Unexplained plumes of radioactive steam have been rising from Fukushima's Reactor Building 3,

Could a major meltdown be on the way?

Fukushima's Reactor Building 3 exploded on 13th March 2011 as a result of a hydrogen buildup, breaching the building's containment and emitting a huge plume of radiation. The reactor itself is in meltdown.

And now fresh plumes of steam have been seen coming out the structure. These have now been confirmed by Tepco, the owner of the nuclear plant, from 19th December onwards. The company believes the steam is coming from the fifth floor of the building.

However it does not know the cause of the steam. Lethal levels of radiation and the physical damage to the structure have so far made entry and inspection impossible.

Possibility 1 - a meltdown is taking place

The Reactor 3 fuel storage pond still houses an estimated 89 tonnes of the plutonium-based MOX nuclear fuel employed by the reactor, composed of 514 fuel rods.

Ever since the explosion Tepco has been concerned that if the spent fuel storage pond dries out, the intensely radioactive spent fuel rods would melt down and produce further significant radioactive emissions.

One possibility is that this process may now be taking place. In the event of water loss from the pond, the water would begin to overheat and produce clouds of steam, prior to a complete meltdown. If this is the case then a second major nuclear disaster at Fukushima is in the making.

Senator Ed Markey leads drone privacy policy

Gonsalves: The danger of droning

Allow me to kick off the new year by clarifying a wish I made in my end-of-the-year column earlier this week.

As reported in the Times on Tuesday, Joint Base Cape Cod has been selected by the Federal Aviation Administration to be one of six test sites across the country to help figure out how to "safely" integrate drones into the nation's airspace for commercial use.

I wished for U.S. Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., to file legislation with an eye toward privacy safeguards as we enter this brave new world.

As a member of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee calling for a "Fourth Amendment for the 21st century," Markey already has filed legislation seeking federal privacy protections. In early November, Markey introduced the Drone Aircraft Privacy and Transparency Act.

Somehow I missed that, amid all the futuristic happy talk PR and the predictable "it will create jobs" mantra now used to justify any and every profit-making scheme under the sun — from casinos to the proposed Lowe's Home Improvement Center in Dennis.

Locally, all the usual suspects are giddy over the economic prospects, and understandably so.

The base testing site, which will be for the civilian use of drones, could bring an estimated 1,000 new jobs and a $385 million jolt to the Bay State economy between 2015 and 2017, according to estimates provided as part of the application.

State Rep. Randy Hunt, R-Sandwich, told the Times he sees multiplier effects that go beyond the potential economic benefits of drone-related jobs. The employees of visiting companies will be staying in local hotels and eating at local restaurants, he predicted.

(Remember this economy-boosting job talk the next time some pol says how big, bad government doesn't create wealth or jobs. This drone business is just the most recent market created in the wake of taxpayer-funded military R&D before it's handed over to private industry to turn profits).

"Irrespective of where you may stand on drones or uses of drones, they're going to be used by the military and for commercial purposes," Hunt told Times reporter George Brennan.

That's one of the things I love about Hunt — his pragmatism, even if some of us reject the economic determinism implied in that statement. The "invisible hand" of the market is human, not to be confused with the finger of God.

Still, practically speaking, he's right on target. Drones buzzing around the friendly skies are the future. So it's heartening to learn in a follow-up story in Wednesday's Times that a bill has been introduced on Beacon Hill by state Sen. Robert Hedlund, R-Weymouth, and state Rep. Colleen Garry, D-Dracut, that would ban the use of drones equipped with weapons and set limits for how they are used by law enforcement.

Also, it should be noted the FAA has issued privacy guidelines for the test sites."It requires operators to comply with all local, state and federal laws concerning privacy and civil liberties," Michael Huerta, administrator of the FAA, said in a conference call with reporters Monday.

"We are also requiring test-site operators to create a privacy policy that is available to the public, and they must require anyone operating unmanned aircraft at test sites to have a written plan for how they will use and retain any test data that might be acquired," Huerta added.

That's a nice start. But Senator Markey makes an important point in a statement his office sent me earlier this week.

"While the FAA is right to require privacy plans for drone operations, a patchwork of plans without a federal law is simply not enough to ensure the strongest safeguards are in place before tens of thousands of drones take to the skies. A state-by-state plan makes no sense," Markey said in a prepared statement.

Noting that "the FAA's plan falls far short of putting in place the necessary privacy protections," Markey suggests four specific requirements as part of the Drone Aircraft Privacy and Transparency Act:
  • Prohibit the FAA from issuing drone licenses unless the license application includes a data collection statement that explains who will operate the drone, where the drone will be flown, what kind of data will be collected, how that data will be used, whether the information will be sold to third parties, and the period for which the information will be retained.
  • Require law enforcement agencies and their contractors and subcontractors to include an additional data-minimization statement that explains how they will minimize the collection and retention of data unrelated to the investigation of a crime.
  • Require that any surveillance involving drones by law enforcement agencies will require a warrant or extreme exigent circumstances.
  • Require the FAA to create a publicly available website that lists all approved licenses and includes the data-collection and data-minimization statements, any data security breaches suffered by a licensee, and the times and locations of drone flights.

Apologies to the senator for being distracted by the "drones are so cool" PR show. I resolve to not let this fly under my radar again.

Fukushima: The endless disaster that continues!

Plumes of mysterious steam rise from crippled nuclear reactor at Fukushima 01 Jan 2014 Fresh plumes of most probably radioactive steam have been detected rising from the reactor 3 building at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, said the facility's operator company. The steam has been detected by surveillance cameras and appeared to be coming from the fifth floor of the mostly-destroyed building housing crippled reactor 3, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), the plant's operator. The steam was first spotted on December 19 for a short period of time, then again on December 24, 25, 27, according to a report TEPCO published on its website.

Two Earthquakes Strike Eastern Japan Near Fukushima Nuclear Site 31 Dec 2013 Two shallow earthquakes have struck eastern Japan near the Fukushima nuclear disaster site. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded 80km southwest of Fukushima and was shortly followed by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake in the same area, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The tremor was 9.9km deep, the US Geological Survey said, adding it took place 13km North West of Takahagi.

District Judge Upholds Government's Right to Search Electronics at Border 31 Dec 2013 The government's right to search travelers' electronic devices at the border was upheld in a ruling released by a federal judge on Tuesday, which dismissed a lawsuit challenging this policy. In his opinion, Judge Edward R. Korman of the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York found that the plaintiffs did not have standing for their lawsuit because such searches occur so rarely that "there is not a substantial risk that their electronic devices will be subject to a search or seizure without reasonable suspicion." Even if the plaintiffs did have standing, Judge Korman found that they would lose on the merits of the case, ruling that the government does not need reasonable suspicion to examine or confiscate a traveler's laptop, cellphone or other device at the border.

Judge upholds search of passengers' laptops 31 Dec 2013 A federal judge in New York on Tuesday upheld a government policy that permits officers at U.S. borders to inspect and copy the contents of travelers' laptops and other devices without reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Edward R. Korman dismissed a lawsuit by a university student and a group of criminal defense lawyers and press photographers challenging regulations adopted by the Department of Homeland Security that allow searches of passengers' electronic equipment at the nation's borders, including at airports and on trains.

'Military-Style' Raid on California Power Station Spooks U.S. 27 Dec 2013 An attack on a power station in California has U.S. officials puzzled and worried about the physical security of the the electrical grid--from attackers who come in with guns blazing. Around 1:00 AM on April 16, at least one individual (possibly two) entered two different manholes at the PG&E Metcalf power substation, southeast of San Jose, and cut fiber cables in the area around the substation. That knocked out some local 911 services, landline service to the substation, and cell phone service in the area, a senior U.S. intelligence official told Foreign Policy. The intruder(s) then fired more than 100 rounds from what two officials described as a high-powered rifle at several transformers in the facility. Ten transformers were damaged in one area of the facility, and three transformer banks -- or groups of transformers -- were hit in another, according to a PG&E spokesman.

Happy New Year, Losers

Greider got it right! The greatest travesty was the Extreme Court decision that denied the poorest health care. State lines will determine their health. How pathetic in this nation!

Happy New Year, Losers

By William Greider, The Nation
01 January 14

hief Justice Roberts wishes a Happy New Year to all those losers who will not get healthcare insurance, thanks to his clever reading of the Constitution. There are 4.8 million of these losers, and 2.6 million of them are people of color, black and Hispanic mainly. Not that the Chief Justice and his right-wing colleagues on the Supreme Court would make racist distinctions. No, no, no. They assure us their decision is solely driven by a matter of high constitutional principle-states' rights.

The problem with these people is that they are low-income adults without dependent children-not quite poor enough to qualify for Medicaid nor old enough to qualify for Medicare. President Obama's original legislation took care of them by expanding Medicaid coverage and putting up the federal money to pay for it. The Roberts decision insisted that state governments have a constitutional right to reject this financial aid from Washington. And twenty-five states took him up on the offer.

This odd failure will probably be blamed on Obama but should rightly be called the "Surpeme Court gap" in universal healthcare coverage. Because these folks do not not quite earn enough to qualify for Obamacare's tax credits to help people purchase health insurance. A report from the Kaiser Family Foundation outlined the consequences. "Most of these individuals have very limited coverage options and are likely to remain uninsured," the foundation explained.

A Titanic Moment In History

It continues to astound what we as a species ignore as the tsunami heads straight toward us! The evidence and the solution are in front of us.

A Titanic Moment In History

This is a Titanic moment in history! We as species are going through the greatest challenge in the history of humanity with climate change, resource depletion, mindless resource wars, threat of a nuclear winter, ethnic and communal strifes, environmental degradation to name a few of the threats we are facing. The saddest part is that we are going to bring the whole edifice down and about to destroy all life forms on earth. This is the reality. But the question is, are WE aware about this reality? A few of Countercurrents readers may be aware of this and working hard to challenge this existential threat. What about the wider world, those 7 Billion others who are walking towards perdition, led by the pied pipers of Mainstream Media?

The myth of endless growth, and the all pervasive culture of greed has driven us to this predicament. With fast depleting resources, stalling the engine of growth, the hound dogs of capitalism has gone mad. They are forcing ever more wars upon us, starving the poor, destroying lives, occupying the land and the homes, they are curbing our freedom with the threat of a bogeyman called 'war on terror', snooping into our privacy, driving us literally from our homes and our work places, controlling and manipulating our lives with a pimp called Mainstream Media. Where do we go from here? We have only two ways left, 1. to go down without a trace 2. to fight and try to reverse this trend, so that our children will not say we didn't try. I chose the second path. That's why Countercurrents is here, and it will be here, no matter what, until "THE LIGHT GOES OUT OF MY LIFE."

If you listen you'll hear the voices of rebellion and resistance from the Dongria Kondh's of Niyamgiri hills of Odisha, India who rejected mining giant Vedanta's efforts to mine in their sacred hills, from the Chiapas mountain ranges of Mexico, of Zapatista resistance movement, and from Cairo and New York of the stories of Occupy spirit, of transition movement from Totness, UK and the stories of compassion from the streets of Kabul, Baghdad and Gaza. These stories need to be TOLD and RETOLD to inspire people to rise up as a whole to demand justice, not just for humanity and our future generation but for all species on this earth and their future progenies. How do we do this?

We don't own NewYork Times, or CNN. We can not hope that these outlets will ever tell these stories in their TRUEST SPIRIT. Our only hope is that to build and nurture independent media outlets like Countercurrents to tell these stories and do our part to help these stories reach a wider audience.

As you may well know our resistance movements are also hijacked by capital. They do this in two ways, by co-option and subversion. They want us to go begging for their advertisement crumbs falling off their table. You'll NEVER EVER see a Coca Cola advertisement on CC pages. The other way is subverting and controlling the resistance by doling out money through their foundations thereby moderating and controlling the message, palatable to the dominant classes. Countercurrents will not go either of these ways. CC will survive by the collective support of its readers and the sweat of my hard labor. We want CC to be funded 100 % by you - our readers! For that we have developed a unique subscription programme.

Our Subscription Programme

Groundbreaking research on cloud behavior and global warming says 'catastrophic' increase of 4°C or more by 2100 should be expected

New research by a team of scientists looking at the impact of cloud behavior on planetary climate change says that "the worst" and "catastrophic" predictions offered by previous studies on the rate of global warming this century are much more likely than the less severe scenarios offered by others.

According to Dr. Steven Sherwood, lead author of the study and a specialist in climate and cloud formations at the University of New South Wales in Australia, cloud patterns in an increasingly warming world are likely to exacerbate global temperature increases overall, not mitigate warming as some models have suggested.

"This study breaks new ground twice," Sherwood explained in an interview with the Guardian. "First by identifying what is controlling the cloud changes and second by strongly discounting the lowest estimates of future global warming in favor of the higher and more damaging estimates."

The research predicts that global temperatures will likely rise at least 4°C by 2100 and potentially more than 8°C by 2200 if carbon dioxide emissions are not reduced and serious actions by governments and society are not taken.

Such drastic increases, Sherwood told the Guardian would be "catastrophic rather than simply dangerous."

Specifically, the study looked at how already warming temperatures impact the ability of clouds to form at high altitudes, because that ability can greatly impact the way in which large clouds help the planet reflect or absorb the sun's heat. One of the long-acknowledged shortcomings of other climate computer models—which drive much of the work of climate change predictions—is the difficulty of accurately projecting cloud behavior under complex, future conditions.

By tackling that problem, say Sherwood and his colleagues, their research "cracks open one of the biggest problems in climate science."

As the Syndey Morning Herald reports:
Will Steffen, an adjunct professor at Australian National University and a member of the Climate Council, said the paper was ''right out on the forefront of the sort of research we need to do on clouds''.

''The more we get research like from [Professor Sherwood] and his group, the more confidence we'll have in being able to say where in that range [the temperature increase] is likely to fall.''

The CO2 level of the atmosphere in 2012 was 393 parts per million, or 41 per cent higher than in pre-industrial times, the World Meteorological Organisation said. The level is rising at an accelerating rate - more than two parts per million a year - as humans burn more fossil fuels and cut down forests.

Global temperatures have risen about 0.8 degrees since about 1880, with system lags and air pollution reflecting sunlight partly explaining why the rise has not been higher.

''We've been hoping for the best and not planning for the worst,'' Professor Sherwood said.

''And now it's looking like the best is not very likely.''
In 2012, a study by the World Bank—an institution not typically known for sounding the alarm over industrial, human-caused global warming—also said that a 4°C temperature rise was not only possible, but likely if humanity did not change course. According to Kim Yong Kim, the bank's president, the resulting impacts of a planet that warm would likely "make the world our children inherit a completely different world than we are living in today."

And those kinds of warnings only mirror the consistent and nearly unanimous consensus of the international scientific community when it comes to temperature increases that exceed the 2°C increase that world governments have set as the benchmark not to exceed this century. The problem, of course, is that no agreements or promises have resulted in actual emission reductions. In fact, annual global emissions continue to increase even as the warnings escalate
