Tampa day care closed after car crash

Tampa day care closed after car crashes into building

Eric Glasser, WTSP
August 29, 2014

Tampa, FL -- Two women were critically hurt when they lost control of their car and plowed into a Tampa day care center early Friday, just hours before the school would have been full of youngsters.

The car struck the Achievement Center for Early Learning, 4601 E. Busch Blvd., near 46th Street.

The owner of the preschool was grateful there were no children in the center.

"It would be a nightmare," said Vincent Hernandez, who owns the preschool.

Hernandez could still hardly believe it as he looked at the shattered glass and debris. A little more than two hours later, "I would have three tables in here filled with children," he said.

The very same room is packed with 15 to 20 children every day from about 6 a.m. until 6.p.m., he says.

"You would see a lot more devastation."

Two women were hurt overnight when their car landed upside down in the parking lot of the Achievement Center for Early Learning building on Busch Blvd.

Two women were hurt overnight when their car landed upside down in the parking lot of the Achievement Center for Early Learning building on Busch Blvd.

About 3:39 a.m., a gray Toyota Camry traveling west on Bush Boulevard when the driver lost control, crossed into the eastbound lanes, then smashed into the front window of Hernandez's preschool before flipping over. The driver and passenger had to crawl out of the passenger's window to get out.

Parents, who started showing up Friday morning to drop off their children, quickly realized it wasn't going to be possible, leaving them scrambling.

"I may have to call out of work now, because I don't have anyone to watch him," said Cynthia Pagan.
"I just basically have to go back home," said Cristina Reza, another parent.

Video taken inside the preschool at the moment of impact shows headlights approaching, then sparks flying as the wall collapses.

Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor.

The victims were both taken to Tampa General Hospital.

Throughout the afternoon, contractors worked to clean up the area. The building itself is still structurally sound, they say. Hernandez says he will keep the room sealed off until repairs are made,
but he plans to re-open for business Tuesday morning.

"It's fixable," he said, "and I'm grateful that nobody got injured."

Tampa police later identified the two women involved in the crash as Haley Burgess, 20, from Tampa, and Candy Turner, 31, from Brandon. Burgess is in stable but critical condition, and Turner is in stable condition, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Accident investigators say there was evidence at the scene leading them to believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Hernandez says there are about 80 families who leave their children in his care each day.

He was already working with other local preschool centers just in case he was unable to re-open after the Labor Day holiday.

But at this point it appears they will be back open for business Tuesday morning.

Parents who want to check for updates on the preschool can call the Achievement Center for Early Learning's answering machine at (813) 988 -1999.

Modi's 100 Days: India Towards Doledrums?
By Ajaya Kumar Singh

http://www.countercurrents.org/aksingh310814.htm

Sangh Parivar aims in attempting to stifle India's vibrant plurality and diversity. Modi's one hundred days show that the very idea of India as plural and diverse nation is at axe. The alarm bell has rung. What nobody dared to do; Sangh Parivar attempts to do it by pulling the strings of the rubrics of the constitution. It does undermine all that India stands for: SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

The Hindutva Hypocrisy
By Bilal Shaheen

Even if India will become a Hindu Rashtra, it will be a Muslim Rashtra, Sikh Rashtra, Christian Rashtra and so on. And it will not be without tragedies, holocuasts and genocides. Millions have already perished in Hindutva's cumbersome mission to install Hindu Rashtra. Today India has its own ground zero at Ayodhya. If nothing is done to stem this rising tide of irrational nationalism, India, sooner or later, will explode into unimaginable scenes of genocide, extremism and nefarious nationalism

The Narrative Of Love Jihad
By Abdul Majid Zargar

http://www.countercurrents.org/zargar310814.htm

With BJP’s ascendance to power at centre and in many other states, the confidence of minorities in the role of the state is fast crumbling, especially as regards their physical protection & prevention of communal violence. Hindu right-wing dominated State governments are lending tacit or express support to the Hindu zealots to promote the agenda of violence & hatred. Many years after anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat (2002) and Mumbai (1993) offenders still wait to be sentenced. Instead, persons convicted of murder have been let free like Maya Kodnani & babu Bajrangi in Gujrat. Similarly Sangeet som, accused of engineering Muzaffar nagar riots has been awarded Z+ security cover. To top it all a rabid communal lunatic has been made in charge of UP poll campaign. And all this does not augur well for India

Over 1,000 Protest In Ferguson, Call For Highway Shutdown Monday
By Kevin Zeese

http://www.countercurrents.org/zeese310814.htm

Well over 1,000 people protested peacefully, marching through Ferguson, going to the police station and some going door-to-door in prosecutor McCulloch’s neighborhood asking him to be removed or recuse himself. There are calls for shutting down highways on Labor Day and, if Officer Wilson is not fired and arrested, for shutting down highways for two days the week after

Washington's Gamble: Wealth, Power And The Drive To Nuclear Armageddon
By Colin Todhunter

http://www.countercurrents.org/todhunter310814.htm

Would the US be prepared to back down? Faced with possible defeat by conventional Russian forces if the worst case scenario comes to pass, would it use the nuclear option to avoid backing down and attempt to eradicate Russia as a potential rival and risk destroying humanity in the process? Given its track record of reckless disregard for human life across the globe since 1945, what do you think?

FERGUSON:
If a Lily White Community were peacefully protesting and invaded by MILITARY WEAPONS including ARMORED VEHICLES, SWAT GEAR, SNIPERS ON THE ROOF, TEAR GAS, RUBBER BULLETS, AUTOMATIC WEAPONS  by a Black Police Force ..... what would the response be?

FERGUSON is a MICROCOSM of American Racism perpetuated by the Republican Party, duplicating the HATE the NAZIs employed to divert attention from their FAILED FISCAL POLICIES. TRICKLE DOWN, ANYONE?

At least be honest!

THE WAR MONGERS:
RSN offered the article below....

Are American Memories so short we've forgotten the MARCH TO WAR in Iraq that destabilized the Middle East?

Didn't Americans march in the streets about the BRUTAL THUG AMERICAN KEPT IN POWER - SADDAM HUSSEIN? Didn't Americans rally with Faux News to silence the OPPOSITION as UNPATRIOTIC?

The poor historical education of Americans has contributed to yet another MARCH TO WAR.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement mandated U.S. SUPPORTED THUGS would rule.

The overthrow of Mossadagh, the installation of the BRUTAL SHAH condemned Iran for the British Monarchy to assure their rule on the backs of the oppressed.

RESOURCE WARS!

The PROJECT FOR THE NEW AMERICAN CENTURY is about the FOLLY of Global Domination at the expense of Americans.

Ending the Medicaid Blockade

The Moral Bankruptcy of GOP needs re-thinking!

The message below from MoveOn:

Another state is joining the right side of history. Pennsylvania will soon become the 28th state to offer Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act.1 After years of stonewalling by Republican Governor Tom Corbett, who's fighting for his political life in a tough re-election bid, Pennsylvania will also join a growing group of Republican-led states to lift their self-imposed Medicaid Blockade.2

The announcement is a welcome relief for up to 500,000 Pennsylvanians who would otherwise be left without any health coverage.3 It's also a deep affirmation of the hard work by elected leaders, groups organizing in Pennsylvania like Keystone Progress and Working America, and health care activists who've been advocating for Medicaid expansion—including hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members like you.

MoveOn members in North Carolina rallying in March for Medicaid expansion

Across the country, MoveOn members are pitching in and participating in other campaigns to pressure elected officials and change the public debate around Medicaid expansion. In Pennsylvania alone, more than 13,000 MoveOn members signed petitions to the Republican governor urging him to accept the federal funds to cover the state's residents under Medicaid.

In Utah, one MoveOn member, independent filmmaker Paul Gibbs, made a documentary called "Entitled to Life," which won wide praise for shining a spotlight on the stories of people in the Medicaid gap.4,5 With support from MoveOn members, Paul is now making films featuring the stories of people trapped behind the Republican Medicaid Blockade in other states—starting with North Carolina and Florida.

MoveOn members like you are crucial to making these campaigns and victories possible. State by state, we're steadily winning on Medicaid expansion—and we're winning the argument about whether to keep moving forward to ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. In another sign of the shifting politics around Obamacare, even Gov. Bill Haslam, the Republican governor of bright red Tennessee who's up for re-election, is moving toward Medicaid expansion.6 Now, with 23 states left to go, and the wall of opposition steadily cracking, it'll take all of us pitching in to fully end the Republican Medicaid Blockade.7

For now, we just wanted to share this terrific news—and thank you for all you've done, and will do.

A Place to Bark

This sweet pup is now in my car & we are headed back to my shelter. I posted the first photo an hour or so ago & for whatever reason a woman started a heated debate as to, how many more I could save if I didn't take the one that needed a little more medical care than normal.
I ask if you love animals, please don't try to discourage myself or others from helping those that need a little extra help.
If people want to help, it's their choice. If I want to give the underdog a chance that is my choice.
Let's agree to disagree for the love of animals.
Not fight amongst ourselves.
It's counter productive & my time is better spent on Saving & Caring for those here.
I structure my program to help all types of dogs.
Old, young, big, small, bully breeds, black dogs & special needs.
They all deserve Life!!! I'm only one person, but do all I can do.
So if you Believe In Life, Thank you for being here & being Positive!!!
This dog is Rescued, SAFE & Saved!
