Stop Ethanol Trains Through Our Communties

No community with freight rail lines is safe! That includes Middleboro.

A sad reminder of why we're involved in this effort: The Port of Tampa shut down this morning as firefighters work to control an ethanol spill from a derailment that appears to have happened at a road crossing. No fire, thankfully, just several leaking tankers spilling ethanol which is potentially making it into the Bay. (Thank you, John Walkey, for sharing).

A CSX train derailment around 1 a.m. Thursday shut down the Port of Tampa after 15 cars left the tracks. Tampa Fire Rescue officials confirmed that out of the 15 cars derailed, three were leaking ethanol. The Miami Herald reported that up to several cars were known to be leaking the flammable liquid.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the train’s derailment is under investigation. Hazmat crews are on the scene to clean up the ethanol and are using spray foam in an effort to reduce a possible fire hazard. The Port of Tampa is expected to remain closed for the remainder of the day and possibly until the early morning hours on Friday, local news station WTSP said.

“There are no concerns about spillage or runoff in the storm water drain and into the Bay," Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Lonnie Benniefield told the Miami Herald. “Now we're waiting to get with CSX to get some vehicles down here that will upright the rail cars."

Equipment from Atlanta was brought in to help upright the derailed cars.
