TEPCO fears 3-cm hole in Fukushima reactor No. 2 30 Jan 2014 The suppression pool of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit No. 2 reactor may have a 3-centimeter hole in it, through which the highly radioactive water might be leaking out, the plant operator said. The information is based on the data gathered by a robot sent into the suppression pool at the bottom of the No. 2 reactor's primary containment vessel earlier in January. Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) estimated the damaged area could be 8 to 9 square centimeters in size. If it is a hole, it is predicted to be between 3.2 and 3.6 centimeters in diameter.

Sellafield nuclear plant staff told to stay home after 'elevated levels of radioactivity' detected 31 Jan 2014 The Sellafield nuclear plant has been evacuated after "elevated levels of radioactivity" were detected. More than 10,000 non-essential staff have been told to stay at home following problems at the site in Cumbria, which is the biggest nuclear site in the UK. A perimeter alarm was triggered at the north of the site, leading to buildings being checked by safety staff, but it was later discovered the higher than normal levels had occurred "naturally".

Man with rifle, machete arrested for threatening George W. Bush 31 Jan 2014 A New York man sitting in a car that had a loaded rifle, machete and a container of gasoline was charged on Friday with threatening to kill George W. Bush after professing a romantic interest in the former president's [sic] oldest daughter, prosecutors said. Benjamin Smith, 44, of Pittsford in upstate New York was arrested in Manhattan by the U.S. Secret Service, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. "Bush will get his," Smith screamed as he was taken into custody, according to the complaint.

Video: Afghans stone US drone 31 Jan 2014 Footage of what appears to be a group of cheering Afghans stoning a wreck of a Predator drone appeared on the internet. It shows a group of several dozen people standing next to what appears a crash site of an MQ-1 Predator drone. The man taking the footage is heard laughing and cheering in delight, as some of the people present throw rocks at the damaged aircraft from a safe distance.

Iraqi militants target Baghdad airport with rocket strike 31 Jan 2014 Three rockets have been fired at Baghdad's heavily guarded international airport, hitting a runway and plane, but no casualties have been reported. Air traffic was not disrupted, but the ability of militants to strike such a site is likely to heighten concerns about the vulnerability of Iraq's vital infrastructure as security deteriorates across the country... Reports from rebel media sources in Fallujah claim that an army barracks south of the city was captured and razed to the ground earlier this week.

Six powers, Iran to begin new nuclear talks on February 18 31 Jan 2104 Six world powers and Iran will begin talks in Vienna on February 18 on a long-term deal for Tehran to curb parts of its nuclear program in exchange for a gradual end to sanctions, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Friday. "We have agreed that we will start the talks on February 18 at the U.N. building in Vienna," Ashton said after what she described as a "really interesting" meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the Munich security conference.

Homeland Security Redacts Drone Info It Already Released Publicly in Report to Congress 31 Jan 2014 Last summer, Homeland Security's Customs and Border Patrol sent EFF a bunch of records in response to EFF's FOIA lawsuit concerning CBP's use of drones. (CBP later "found" additional records it had neglected to pass along.) Perhaps more interesting (and troubling) is that last fall, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) in Congress had asked DHS for similar information, including "all mission logs related to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol's (CBP) drone program from 2010 to 2013." DHS eventually handed over that information, including many of the same documents it released to the EFF, which were shared publicly. Except...the documents it gave to Congress had many more redactions than the ones they released to EFF.

Canadian spy agency gleaned passengers' data from airport's wifi: CBC 30 Jan 2014 30 Jan 2014 A federal electronic spy agency tracked thousands of people who passed through a Canadian airport using information gleaned from free wireless Internet service, reports the CBC. Citing a secret document leaked by former U.S. security contractor Edward Snowden, CBC reported that Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) collected data from passengers' smartphones and laptops over a two-week period and tracked those devices for a week or longer afterward. CSEC is tasked with collecting foreign intelligence under law and can't target Canadians, or anyone within Canada, without a warrant. CBC quoted several experts who said CSEC's actions were "almost certainly illegal."

FBI: Pre-Super Bowl white powder deemed not hazardous 31 Jan 2014 The FBI said Friday that white powder found at New Jersey hotels near the site of the Super Bowl and at the Manhattan office of former Mayor [9/11 co-conspirator] Rudy Giuliani proved to be non-hazardous. Hazardous materials teams and bomb squads responded after white powder was found at several hotels near New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, authorities said. In a statement late Friday, the New Jersey State Police said most of the locations that the Joint Terrorism Task Force and hazard materials responded to because of the suspicious powder had been secured.

Suspicious powder sent to hotels near Super Bowl 31 Jan 2014 Hazmat crews and law enforcement responded to at least four hotels near MetLife Stadium on Friday in response to deliveries of packages containing white powder.

Chris Christie booed during Super Bowl 'hand off' ceremony in Times Square 01 Feb 2014 Gov. Chris Christie was booed by a huge crowd gathered in Times Square today for the ceremonial 'handing off' of the Super Bowl to Arizona, next year's host state. The beleaguered governor spoke for less than a minute on a stage set up in the middle of Broadway, renamed Super Bowl Boulevard this week. "Thank you very much to all of our patrons, the NFL, the team owners, look forward to handing it off to Arizona," Christie said, speaking over the unhappy crowd.

Christie Knew About Lane Closings as They Happened, Ex-Ally Says 31 Jan 2014 The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on Friday that the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening, and that he had the evidence to prove it. In a letter released by his lawyer, the official, David Wildstein, a high school friend of Mr. Christie's who was appointed with the governor's blessing at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the bridge, described the order to close the lanes as "the Christie administration's order" and said "evidence exists as well tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference" three weeks ago.

Bridge scandal: Chris Christie knew about lane closures, Wildstein's lawyer says 31 Jan 2014 The attorney representing David Wildstein, a former official at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said today that Gov. Chris Christie knew of the closure of lanes from Fort Lee on to the George Washington Bridge when they occurred in September. "Evidence exists as well tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference" last month, the attorney, Alan Zegas, said. Zegas also said Wildstein "contests the accuracy of various statements that the governor made about him and he can prove the inaccuracy of some."

Koch-backed political coalition, designed to shield donors, raised $400 million in 2012 05 Jan 2014 The political network spearheaded by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch has expanded into a far-reaching operation of unrivaled complexity, built around a maze of groups that cloaks its donors, according to an analysis of new tax returns and other documents... Key players in the Koch-backed network have already begun engaging in the 2014 midterm elections, hiring new staff members to expand operations and strafing House and Senate Democrats with hard-hitting ads over their support for the Affordable Care Act.

The Koch Network: A Cartological Guide 07 Jan 2014 Our joint analysis with the Washington Post of the Koch brothers' labyrinthine network of political groups -- none of which reveal the names of their donors -- showed that the coalition raised more than 400 million during the 2012 election.

Australia permits dredge dumping near Great Barrier Reef for major coal port --If all the dredged material were dumped on land, the pile would be bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza. 31 Jan 2014 Australia's Great Barrier Reef watchdog gave the green light on Friday for millions of cubic metres of dredged mud to be dumped near the fragile reef to create the world's biggest coal port and possibly unlock 28 billion in coal projects. Environmentalists, scientists and tour operators had fought the plan to dump soil 25 km (15 miles) from the reef, which they fear will harm delicate corals and seagrasses and potentially double ship traffic through the World Heritage marine park.
