PLYMOUTH -- The state Department of Environmental Protection has scheduled a public hearing for 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at Plymouth Town Hall to gather comments on a plan to build a secondary water intake system in Cape Cod Bay for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. The secondary system would provide backup if needed to lower temperatures in the reactor during “beyond design events” such as extreme storms, earthquakes or other occurrences.
Several conservation groups in the area have opposed the application, filed by Entergy Corp., owner-operator of the Plymouth plant, saying it would further damage Cape Cod Bay and negatively affect marine life.
“What Entergy seeks via the application is ultimately a license to contaminate the tidelands and Cape Cod Bay with a massive amount of radiologically contaminated seawater. The application fails to describe what will happen with the seawater once it is used in the emergency situation for cooling -- in fact, the contaminated water will be released directly into the environment, including the tidelands,” wrote Meg Sheehan, attorney for Cape Cod Bay Watch, in a comment letter to EPA officials.
