A new Mercy For Animals investigation reveals malicious animal cruelty at Seaboard Foods—a major Walmart pork supplier. Workers are seen viciously beating and striking frightened animals on their backs and faces with heavy boards and cans. INVESTIGATIONS AT WALMART PORK SUPPLIERS REVEAL:
Pregnant pigs confined to filthy, metal gestation crates so small they are unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably
Workers slamming conscious piglets headfirst into the ground and leaving them to suffer and slowly die
Workers ripping out the testicles and slicing off the tails of piglets without the use of any painkillers
Sick and injured pigs with severe, bleeding wounds or infections left to suffer without veterinary care
Walmart likes to tout its low prices, but when it comes to pork sold in its stores, animals are left to pay the highest price of all—lives filled with misery and deprivation. Mercy For Animals has recently conducted multiple undercover investigations at Walmart pork suppliers across the country. Time after time these investigations have revealed horrific cruelty to animals.
Seaboard Foods — Colorado, 2015
On the heels of an undercover investigation of a Seaboard Foods pig factory farm in 2014, Mercy For Animals has exposed criminal cruelty to animals at another Seaboard facility in Colorado.
This time we documented:
- Workers punching and violently hitting pigs in their faces and bodies with boards and heavy cans
- Pigs crammed in barren concrete pens barely able to move without climbing over other animals
- Stressed animals repeatedly biting the bars of their pens—a sign of serious mental collapse
- Workers snaring animals and firing captive bolts into their skulls in full view of other pigs
MFA is calling on Walmart to immediately adopt new animal welfare requirements for its pork suppliers to prevent egregious animal abuse, including zero tolerance for punching and beating animals, installing live-stream cameras to deter abuse, and prohibiting Seaboard Foods and its other pork suppliers from confining pigs in inherently cruel gestation crates.
Seaboard Foods — Colorado, 2014
At a factory farm in Colorado owned by Seaboard Foods—one of the largest pork producers in the country—an investigator with Mercy For Animals used a hidden camera to document:
- Pregnant pigs locked in tiny metal gestation crates unable to walk, turn around, or lie down comfortably for nearly their entire lives
- Workers slicing off the tails and ripping out the testicles of piglets using dull razors and their fingers
- Mother pigs afflicted with open wounds and pressure sores left to suffer without proper veterinary care
- Workers hitting piglets with rock-filled gas cans to force them into overcrowded walkways and transport trucks
Pigs raised for pork sold at Walmart stores are treated as mere meat-producing machines. Their short lives are filled with misery and deprivation. Common sense tells us that animals with legs should be able to walk, run, and exercise. Keeping highly intelligent and social animals confined in cages so small they can’t even turn around for nearly their entire lives is blatant cruelty.
Tyson Pork Group — Oklahoma, 2013
A Mercy For Animals investigator worked at Tyson Pork Group's West Coast Farm facility between September and October of 2013 and documented:
- Workers viciously punching, kicking, beating, and violently shaking animals and pulling out their hair
- Piglets having their tails hacked off and their testicles ripped out of their bodies without painkillers
- Workers slamming conscious piglets headfirst against the ground and spiking them like footballs
- Pregnant pigs confined to tiny, maggot-infested gestation crates barely able to move for their entire lives
- Workers shoving their fingers into pigs' eyes, hitting them with wooden boards, and throwing a heavy bowling ball at their heads
- Piglets left to suffer and slowly die on dead piles without proper veterinary care
World-renowned animal welfare expert Dr. Temple Grandin reviewed the undercover video footage and compared the abusive handling of animals to the "notorious Westland Hallmark video" that led to the largest meat recall in U.S. history.
Pipestone System — Minnesota, 2013
Between August and September of 2013, an MFA investigator working at Pipestone System's Rosewood Farms in Pipestone, Minnesota, documented the following abuses:
- Pregnant pigs confined to filthy, metal gestation crates so small they were unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably
- Workers slamming conscious piglets headfirst into the ground and leaving them to suffer and slowly die
- Workers ripping out the testicles and slicing off the tails of piglets without the use of any painkillers
- Sick and injured pigs with severe, bleeding wounds or infections left to suffer without veterinary care
- Workers punching, beating and screaming at animals to move them
