Anti-nuclear groups to march from Plymouth to Boston June 13
On Saturday, June 13, members of several local anti-nuclear groups from Plymouth for Boston. Four days later, when the marchers reach the State House, they will call for the closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth.
The "March for Our Children" will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Catherine's Park in Manomet. Participants will begin their 54-mile journey to Boston with a brief stop to "wave good-bye to the troubled Pilgrim Nuclear Reactor," according to the itinerary on the MA Downwinders website.
The march will end at the State House with a rally in the Gardner Auditorium at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 featuring several speakers including former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis and State Senator Dan Wolf (D-Harwich). Representatives from area organizations including Dr. Kea Van Der Ziel of Boston Area Physicians for Social Responsibility, Ed DeWitt, the President of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod and Jerry Frenkil, Executive Committee Member of the MA Sierra Club will also speak along with nuclear opponents from local groups including Diane Turco from Cape/MA Downwinders, Anna Baker of Pilgrim Coalition, Claire Miller of Toxics Action Center and Mary Lampert of Pilgrim Watch.
The march was organized by Cape Downwinders, Massachusetts Downwinders and Occupy Hingham with the expressed goal of "raising awareness that Pilgrim is a threat to surrounding communities" in the event of a nuclear accident or incident. According to MA Downwinders, not only Cape Cod, but Boston would be in danger should an accident occur.
In March, Pilgrim Coalition, Cape Cod Downwinders, Pilgrim Watch and Jones River Watershed Association sent a letter to Governor Charlie Baker urging him to be proactive about the Entergy-owner facility.
Anyone interested in joining the march may do so at one of five locations: Plymouth on June 13, Kingston on June 14, Scituate on June 15, Braintree on June 16 or at the rally at the State House on June 16 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., according to the event flyer.
