Want to bring back the "Scarlet Letter" for women? Vote Jeb Bush.

Let's be clear: No matter what he says, Jeb Bush is not a moderate. Scratch just beneath the surface of his carefully crafted image and Bush's frightening extremism emerges.

As the Huffington Post reported on Tuesday, Jeb Bush advocated -- in his 1995 book "Profiles in Character" -- for the use of literal public shaming as a means to curb "irresponsible behavior" like having children out of wedlock. He even name-checked Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter" in order to remind readers "that public condemnation of irresponsible sexual behavior has strong historical roots."

Even worse, when he was governor of Florida, Jeb proved that he wasn't just giving lip service to this atrocious idea.

In 2001, Bush refused to veto the "Scarlet Letter Law," which required single mothers to publish a detailed account of their own sexual history in the newspaper as a pre-condition for putting children up for adoption.

I don't know about you, but I have had enough of Republicans thinking they have the right to shame, bully and lecture people -- and I definitely don't want a president who thinks it is his moral imperative to humiliate women over their sexual choices.

That's why Democracy for America is already building progressive power to beat back Jeb Bush and his Republican challengers for the White House -- as well as winning at the state and local levels in the fight against the GOP's War on Women.

Don't give Jeb Bush and the GOP the opportunity to make our country a "Scarlet Letter" society -- and turn back the clock on women's rights. Chip in $3 now so DFA can help build the grassroots army progressives need to win a resounding victory in 2016.

Jeb Bush's "Scarlet Letter" obsession doesn't put him out of step with his Republican competition -- it puts him right smack in the middle of a field of candidates known for their hostility towards women. Just recently, Scott Walker said in an interview that mandating often invasive ultrasounds for women seeking abortions was "a cool thing." And every single Republican candidate is on the record saying they would support a 20-week abortion ban on the federal level.

Let's face it: If any one of the Republican contenders wins the White House, it will be a disaster for women. And we know that the eventual GOP candidate will have almost limitless money behind them from right-wing billionaires like the Koch brothers.

That's why the time to begin organizing is NOW -- and that is just what DFA is doing.

We're digging deep into some of 2015's hottest races in places like Virginia and New Jersey, activating volunteers and building lasting networks around progressive candidates. And we've set an ambitious goal to train 25,000 volunteers by 2016, setting them up with fresh skills and technological know-how that will help them step up and become the leaders we need to win big when it matters most.

We can't let Jeb Bush's "Scarlet Letter" society become a reality. That's why we're already working to build the power it takes to win -- but we need your help if we are going to be successful.

Can you pitch in $3 now to support DFA's work to fight back against the GOP's War on Women -- and stop Republicans like Jeb Bush from winning back the White House in 2016?

Thanks for your support, now and in the critical months to come. We can't win without you.
