Petition: Restore voting rights

Last month, we commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 --  the landmark law designed to stop discrimination and protect access to the polls for every American.

But for many, the celebration was bittersweet. In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted key provisions of the law -- and Congress has yet to reinstate them.

I’ve served as Ohio’s Secretary of State. I know first-hand how damaging Congress’ failure to restore the Voting Rights Act can be. We should be breaking down barriers to the ballot box, not erecting them.

I’m fighting to restore the Voting Rights Act and make sure all Americans have access to the polls -- click here to join me.

The right to vote is what allows people to make decisions about their country. There is no more important symbol of our democracy.

Unfortunately, there is a history in our country of leaders trying to restrict people’s access to the polls to gain a political advantage -- and that’s why the protections established in the Voting Rights Act were so vital.

The Supreme Court’s 2013 decision has opened up opportunities for discrimination once again. Many states, including my home state of Ohio, have passed regulations or cut protections that make it more difficult for Americans to gain access to the polls. All of this means we need to be more vigilant than ever so that no American citizen is disenfranchised from casting his or her ballot.

Add your voice to mine today. Help me protect access to the polls and restore the Voting Rights Act.

Thank you,
