In an unexpected and abrupt move, Islands Airlines has closed for business. The announcement was made via a brief statement on the company's website: "It is with great sadness that we are forced to announce that Island Airlines and Cape & Islands Air Freight will be closing its doors effective immediately."
The last post on the Island Airlines Facebook page at noon read, "All flights for the remainder of the day are canceled due to fog in HYA and ACK." A not so cryptic comment below the post read, "Bull. Let's just fold up right before Christmas and ruin travel. Belly up."
The company, which shuttled passengers between Nantucket and Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, had been in business for 24 years.
We will update the story as more information is made available.
