12-year-old girl fatally shot during family’s eviction from Pennsylvania home

A 12-year-old girl was reportedly shot to death as police in Duncannon, Pennsylvania were supervising the eviction of her family.
According to WHTM, family members identified the victim as Susquenita Middle School student Ciara Meyer. Her uncle described her as a “wonderful girl, full of life.”
The Sentinel reported that Pennsylvania State Constable Clarke Steele had gone to the apartment on Tuesday to enforce the eviction order when Ciara Meyer’s father, Don Meyer, pointed a .223 caliber rifle at his chest.
Officials said that Steele fired a single shot that traveled through Don Meyer’s arm and then lodged in Ciara Meyer, who was standing behind him. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The father was flown to a hospital for treatment, but his current condition was not known.
An autopsy for Ciara Meyer was scheduled for Wednesday. Police said that a chambered rifle and a loaded 30 round magazine were recovered from the apartment.
A statement posted to the Susquenita School District website on Tuesday said that district officials were aware that “a police incident has taken place late this morning at the Pfautz Apartments in Duncannon.”
“The administration is working now to address potential impacts of this incident on our Staff and Students,” the statement said.
A neighbor whose daughter played with Ciara Meyer said that her loss was devastating.
“Very kind, sweet kid,” the neighbor recalled to WHTM. “Here’s a little girl that doesn’t even have a chance to grow up and live her life, and all because of this senseless act. It’s horrible, absolutely heartbreaking.”
