"Back in the early 1980s, the Christian Right used the same arguments to try to preserve the right of religious schools to ban interracial dating and lost their cases before the Supreme Court. They lost those cases, but today, in an act of tremendous chutzpah, they have cynically appropriated the language of moral persuasion used successfully by the civil rights movement to advance essentially the same cause.
Clarkson warns in his report against playing into the Christian Right’s plan by presenting the arguments as if there is some legitimate conflict between religious freedom and civil rights, and this sounds like good advice. The nation has done very well in the last half century by simply saying that discrimination is wrong, period. Nobody is telling religious employers that they must use birth control or marry a member of the same sex. That would be absurd. They are simply saying they cannot discriminate against those who do. It’s really not complicated. But if these well-heeled, well-connected conservative legal and political institutions have their way we’ll be spending the next few decades trying to sort it all out. And that’s the point."

Officials confirm at least 10 people in Flint, Michigan have died from Legionnaires’ disease amid a surge in infections caused by the water-borne bacteria. Flint is already under a state of emergency over lead-poisoned water.
Officials have stopped short of tying the uptick in Legionnaires’ cases to the water poisoning, citing a lack of evidence.

Michigan Gov. Snyder says Legionnaire’s Disease killed 10 people near water disaster zone

Gov. Rick Snyder (State of Michigan)
Legionella bacteria, which can cause the illness commonly known as Legionnaire’s Disease, killed 10 people in the area covering Flint, Michigan, which has been embroiled in a “man-made disaster” caused by poisoned water, Gawker reported.
Gov. Rick Snyder (R), whose administration has been blamed for causing the issues with the city’s water supply, made the announcement during a press conference on Wednesday.
Snyder said that 87 cases of the disease were diagnosed in Genesee County, where Flint is located, between June 2014 and November 2015. That period begins two months after the city’s emergency manager — appointed by Snyder — moved to draw its water supply from the Flint River instead of Lake Huron and ends a month after the decision was reversed.
The city declared a state of emergency last month after lead contamination was confirmed in the water supply.
But the Detroit Free Press reported last week that the governor’s then-chief-of-staff, Dennis Muchmore, expressed concern over the contaminated water as early as July 2014.
However, the state Department of Environmental Quality, which reports only to Snyder, dismissed data showing the extent of the problem. And Snyder has refused to pinpoint the contaminated water as the reason behind a surge of health issues affecting children in the city.
