It's past time to take action

I had an incredible day last Saturday marching in the Boston Pride Parade. Love, community and social justice were all celebrated with passion and a real sense of progress. When I woke Sunday morning, I was sickened and devastated by the news from Orlando. Once again, terror and hate had ripped through yet another peaceful community at the hands of a gunman.

We all grieve for the victims, their families, and their loved ones. We are grateful for all the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to aid those in need at the horrific scene of the attack. We send love to our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who have suffered this despicable hate crime.

Orlando was the worst mass shooting in our history. I will not become numb and wait for another.

For too long, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has had a stranglehold on Congress. For too long, the gun lobby has used its power in Washington to block any and all commonsense measures aimed at reducing gun violence.

Enough is enough.

It’s time to stop individuals on the terror watch list from legally purchasing firearms and explosives.

It’s time we require background checks for anyone buying a gun -- even if they’re buying it online or at a gun show.

It’s time we stop domestic abusers from buying guns.

It’s time we reinstate the ban on assault-style weapons and get these killing machines off our streets.

And once and for all, it’s time we end the ban on federal gun violence research and and study gun violence as the public health epidemic it is.

After the attack in Orlando, it’s time we come together to denounce hate in every form and recommit ourselves to stopping another massacre like this from happening again. We can break the grip of the NRA. We can pass common sense gun safety measures and make our communities safe. Click here and sign my petition to join me in this effort >>

I have taken on the NRA before -- and I’ve won. We can do it again. It’s time we all stand up and say enough is enough.

Thank you for joining me.
