Breaking: Gunmen Kill 4 Officers, Take Dozens Hostage in Bangladesh | 01 July 2016 | Attackers stormed a restaurant Friday night in Bangladesh's capital, taking about 40 people within the diplomatic enclave hostage and exchanging gunfire with police, killing four security personnel, officials said. A team of seven or eight attackers entered the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka's Gulshan area around 9:20 p.m. local time (11:20 a.m. ET) and were holding customers and staff captive at gunpoint, a senior police official Assistant Superintendent Fazle-e-Elahi told NBC News by phone from Dhaka. The ISIS-affiliated Amaq news agency reported that the ISIS had claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the terror research firms Flashpoint Intelligence and Site Intelligence Group.

A police officer in charge of a nearby station was shot dead, Maruf Hasan of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said. A second officer later died from gunshot wounds, Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam tells CNN.

As many as nine gunmen entered the Holey Artisan restaurant and opened fire, unleashing at least 50 shots and hurling makeshift bombs. The attackers are reportedly holding around 20 people hostage at gunpoint inside the Spanish restaurant, including foreigners, in the upmarket Gulshan area. Police are preparing heavily-armoured vehicles in an attempt to storm the premises, which is near to a hospital, and rescue those held inside.

 

CIA chief warns Americans after Istanbul airport attack --CIA boss John Brennan: Would be 'surprised' if they didn't try it in the U.S. | 29 June 2016 | CIA director John Brennan is expressing new concern about ISIS' ability to kill 'as many people as possible' in the wake of the horrific airport attack in Turkey. 'You look at what happened in the Turkish airport, these were suicide vests. It's not that difficult to actually construct and fabricate a suicide vest,' Brennan told YahooNews. Surveillance video of the attack at Ataturk airport in Istanbul shows gunmen shooting people in the airport and then detonating suicide vests – a technique meant to inflict maximum casualties.

 

Turkey Arrests 13 Over Istanbul Airport Attack | 30 June 2016 | Turkish police arrested 13 people in connection with the deadly attack on Istanbul's airport, officials said Thursday. More than 40 people died and over 200 were injured when assailants with guns and explosives hit the airport on Tuesday. Officials have said the coordinated assault on Ataturk airport bore the hallmarks of ISIS [I-CIA-SIS], but there has been no official claim of responsibility. Anti-terror police carried out 16 raids in relation to the Ataturk attack overnight. Interior Minister Efkan Ala told Turkey's Parliament that 13 people - including four foreigners - had been arrested.

 

Istanbul airport attackers identified; death toll rises to 44 | 30 June 2016 | As the death toll from the Istanbul airport attack rose Thursday to 44, a senior Turkish official said the three suicide bombers who carried it out were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and police raided neighborhoods looking for suspects linked to the Islamic State group. Turkish authorities have said all information suggested the Tuesday night attack on Ataturk Airport, one of the world's busiest, was the work of IS, which boasted this week of having cells in Turkey, among other countries. The police raided 16 locations in three neighborhoods on both the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, rounding up 13 people suspected of having links to the Islamic State group.

'Active shooter' report at Andrews Air Base linked to drill | 30 June 2016 | Andrews Air Base, the military facility that is home to Air Force One, was placed on lockdown briefly Thursday after a planned active-shooter training exercise was apparently mistaken for a real, armed threat. Emergency personnel at the base, located about 20 miles outside downtown Washington, D.C., responded to calls at 9:30 a.m. of an active shooter, according to Ann Stefanek, an Air Force spokeswoman. The call came in about a half hour after the scheduled start of an "active shooter" drill.

 

Andrews Air Force Base on lockdown amid reports of active shooter - at the same time active shooter DRILL was supposed to start | 30 June 2016 | Joint Base Andrews in Maryland is on lockdown amid reports of an active shooter. All personnel were ordered to shelter in place shortly after 9am Eastern Time. It came at the same time that an active shooter training exercise was due to start at the base. Security has also been tightened at the nearby Ft Belvoir, Naval Observatory, and Navy Yard. Officials tweeted that the situation is centered on the base's Malcolm Grow Medical Facility.

 

NY enacts tougher anti-terrorism rule | 30 June 2016 | Banks and other companies overseen by New York's top fin-ncial regulator starting in January will be required to maintain monitoring and filtering systems to spot suspected m-ney laundering and terrorism funding. Toughening efforts to block illegal transactions, the New York Department of F-nancial Services said Thursday the new regulation requires banks and companies to submit annual certifications documenting their use of "reasonably designed" monitoring systems. That requirement could expose company officials to legal penalties if the regulator finds compliance violations or other failings.

Kennedy International Airport in New York was briefly evacuated on Wednesday morning while police, including a bomb squad, investigated a report of a suspicious package. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees operations at the three major airports in the New York City area, said in a statement that police had added 'high visibility patrols with tactical weapons and equipment.' The agency said it had already put in place counterterrorism patrols at various transportation hubs in the region following the mass shooting in Orlando earlier this month.

"US State Department and security services have been actively using the Washington Post for disseminating distorted information and outright lies about 'harassment' of the US diplomats in Russia," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, commenting on a report by the US newspaper on the alleged beating of a US diplomat by Russian security staff... The ministry's spokeswoman explained that, in reality, it was a US citizen who attacked a Russian security guard stationed outside the US embassy when the officer tried to check his ID.

 

British man who 'tried to shoot Donald Trump with cop's gun at campaign rally' faces 30 years in prison as he is charged | 30 June 2016 | A British man who authorities say tried to grab a police officer's gun to shoot presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at a Las Vegas campaign rally has been indicted on federal criminal charges. A grand jury on Wednesday charged Michael Steven Sandford, 20, with disrupting an official function and two firearm possession counts, U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said. Together, the charges could get him up to 30 years in prison.

 

EgyptAir crash: Flight MS804 black box 'confirms smoke' | 29 June 2016 | A black box recording from crashed EgyptAir flight MS804 confirms smoke on board, Egyptian investigators say. The flight from Paris to Cairo plunged into the Mediterranean Sea on 19 May, killing all 66 people on board. Automated electronic messages sent by the plane had shown that smoke detectors went off in a toilet and in the avionics area below the cockpit, minutes before the plane disappeared. The recorded data are consistent with those messages, investigators said.

 

Oslo court rejects Edward Snowden lawsuit | 27 June 2016 | The Oslo District Court has sided with Norway's state attorney and has rejected American whistleblower Edward Snowden's lawsuit to prevent his potential extradition. The Oslo court said on Monday that it would not handle Snowden's lawsuit, which the former NSA worker filed in April as a way of seeking a guarantee that he will not be extradited if he visits the Norwegian capital to accept an aw-rd. The Norwegian branch of the PEN Club has invited Snowden, who has been living in exile in Russia since 2013 after revealing widespread US foreign surveillance, to collect the Ossietzky aw-rd for freedom of expression in November.

 

U.S. military repeals ban on transgender service members | 30 June 2016 | The Pentagon on Thursday ended its ban on openly transgender people serving in the U.S. military, formally removing the risk to an estimated thousands of U.S. troops who once could have been kicked out of the armed forces due to gender identity. The repeal, which ends one of the last barriers to serving in the military, comes after a 2011 decision to end the U.S. military's ban on openly gay and lesbian people serving, despite concerns - which proved unfounded - that such a move could be too great a burden in wartime and would undermine battle readiness.

 

Nuclear safety expert seeks data about Pilgrim incident | 01 July 2016 | A well-known nuclear safety expert is looking for more information from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding a report that both emergency diesel generators at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station [Plymouth, MA] had been out of commission at the same time for a short period in April while the reactor was operating at full power. David Lochbaum, director of the Nuclear Safety Program for the Union of Concerned Scientists, questions how long the plant had been running with no emergency generators, which provide a default power source to safely shut down the reactor, maintain safe shutdown conditions and operate all essential systems if primary and secondary power sources have failed.

 

Lynch to Accept F.B.I. Recommendations in Clinton Email Inquiry, Official Says | 01 July 2016 | Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch plans to announce on Friday that she will accept whatever recommendation career prosecutors and the F.B.I. director make about whether to bring charges related to Hillary Clinton's personal email server, a Justice Department official said. Her decision removes the possibility that a political appointee will overrule investigators in the case. The Justice Department had been moving toward such an arrangement for months - officials said in April that it was being considered - but a private meeting between Ms. Lynch and former President Bill Clinton this week set off a political furor and made the decision all but inevitable.

 

Bill Clinton, AG Loretta Lynch meet on tarmac in Phoenix | 29 June 2016 | As his wife is under federal investigation for her use of a private email server, former President Bill Clinton met privately with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch at the Phoenix Airport Monday evening in what both sides say was an unplanned encounter. An aide to Bill Clinton confirmed to CBS News that the meeting wasn't planned in advance: President Clinton saw the attorney general on the tarmac and wanted to say hello, so he boarded her plane to talk. The meeting comes as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is still under investigation for her email practices--and also came the day before House Republicans released a report criticizing the Obama administration's response to the 2012 Benghazi attacks. Lynch told reporters that the topics of Benghazi and Clinton's email server did not come up, and that she and Clinton spoke largely about his grandchildren, golf and travel.

A Daily Mail Online investigation has found that a second firm - hired to store a back-up of Clinton's secret server - was so lax in its security employees failed to change passwords frequently and left computers logged in, unattended for extended periods and its own clients stumbled upon other clients data. Datto Inc, the company in question, was hired to store Hilary's emails by Platte River, the mom-and-pop company contracted to maintain her 'homebrew' email system. Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail Online on condition of anonymity, one former employee at Datto, said the company was woefully exposed to being hacked.

 

Mississippi law allowing denial of services to LGBT people is blocked by federal judge | 01 July 2016 | A federal judge has blocked a Mississippi law intended to allow people who object on religious grounds to same-sex marriage and believe gender is determined at birth to refuse wedding and other services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves found late Thursday that the wide-ranging law adopted this spring unconstitutionally allowed "arbitrary discrimination" against the LGBT community, unmarried people and others who do not share such views.

 

Puerto Rico Relief Measure Clears Senate, Goes to Obama | 29 June 2016 | Just two days before Puerto Rico plans to default on a large debt payment, the Senate on Wednesday passed and sent to the White House a relief measure to help the fin-ncially desperate island surmount its fiscal crisis, ending a grueling, months-long effort to rescue the commonwealth. The Senate, eager to follow the House out of town for a long Fourth of July weekend, voted 68 to 30 for the legislation on Wednesday evening after a test vote that morning showed by a wide margin that critics in both parties did not have the numbers to block passage. President Obama will sign the measure, which his Treasury secretary [corporatist dirt-bag], Jacob J. Lew, had negotiated and lobbied for since December.

 

'Urgent' air bag danger for 313,000 Honda owners | 30 June 2016 | The U.S. government is urging owners of 313,000 older Hondas and Acuras to stop driving them and get them repaired after new tests found that their Takata air bag inflators are extremely dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday that it has data showing that chances are as high as 50 percent that the inflators can explode in a crash, injuring people by sending metal shrapnel into the passenger compartments. "These vehicles are unsafe and need to be repaired immediately," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. "Folks should not drive these vehicles unless they are going straight to a dealer to have them repaired."

 

Toyota recalls 3.37 million cars over airbag, emissions control issues | 29 June 2016 | Japan's Toyota Motor Corp has recalled 3.37 million cars worldwide over possible defects involving airbags and emissions control units. The automaker on Wednesday said it was recalling 2.87 million cars over a possible fault in emissions control units. That followed an announcement late on Tuesday that 1.43 million cars needed repairs over a separate issue involving air bag inflators.

 

600-year-old New Jersey oak tree is dying | 29 June 2016 | What is believed to be the oldest white oak tree in the country, one that has called Basking Ridge home for more than 600 years, is now dramatically showing signs of age and causing concern. The tree is located beside the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, where it already stood for nearly 300 years before the church was built in 1717. Famous English evangelists James Davenport and George Whitefield preached to more than 3,000 people beneath the tree in 1740. George Washington picnicked under its shade.
