Australia: Deepening Social Discontent Produces Post-Election Turmoil
by Mike Head

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/australia-deepening-social-discontent-produces-post-election-turmoil

With 1.5 million postal votes still to be counted, some of which will not arrive until July 15, it may be another 10 days before the outcome of the election is known. At least 13 seats in the 150-member lower house remain in doubt, leaving both parties well short of the required majority of 76 seats.

Frederick Douglass’ Speech For July 4, 1852 Is A Speech For Us All Today
by Nicholas C Arguimbau

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/frederick-douglass-speech-for-july-4-1852-is-a-speech-for-us-all-today/

If the Constitution today benefits only the one % , we must not express our anger at the document but only at those who would limit it and prevent it from being expanded. Because if in our anger we abandon the document, what do we have left? So read Frederick Douglass’ speech.

July 4th Reflections From Frederick Douglass
by Robert J Barsocchini

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/july-4th-reflections-from-frederick-douglass/

Frederick Douglass, one of the most brilliant minds in history, had many praises for the US and its founders. However, he experienced the nation more fully than any of them, beginning his life a victim of the totalitarian fascism they practiced and promoted, and ending it a statesman and a friend of President Lincoln.  Thus his understanding and analysis of the complex country and its culture is more complete and balanced than most.  Known as a dazzling orator, he had this to say in a 4th of July address in 1852

Carnage In Istanbul, Dhaka And Baghdad
by Dr Chandra Muzaffar

The month of Ramadan witnessed unspeakable carnage in three Muslim cities in three different countries. On 28 June 2016, 41 people, both locals and foreigners were killed in shootings and suicide bombings at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport. On 2nd July, 20 people taken hostage by militants in an upmarket restaurant in Dhaka, Bangladesh were shot andmurdered. On the 3rd of July in Baghdad, 165 were massacred in massive bomb blasts

Mining Threatens Papua New Guinea’s Mighty Sepik River With Utter Ruin
By Rainforest Portal

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/mining-threatens-papua-new-guineas-mighty-sepik-river-with-utter-ruin/

Chinese government’s massive open-pit mine in the rainy Papua New Guinea highlands, with its tons of toxic tailings full of sulphides and heavy metals, is to be poised above the Sepik River and its primary rainforests, intact local cultures, and the South Pacific Ocean. Apparently Papua New Guinea’s urban elites have learned little from decades of foreign industrial mining (and logging) causing conflict and despair, environmental damage, and social and economic decline.

Mordechai Vanunu Indicted Again
by Eileen Fleming

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/mordechai-vanunu-indicted-again/

On Monday the Jerusalem Magistrate indicted Israel Nuclear Whistle Blower Mordechai Vanunu for allegedly sharing classified information in an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 television channel.  Vanunu was also indicted because he moved into a different apartment [in the same building] without informing the police, and because he was caught meeting with two foreign nationals three years ago!

Hillary Clinton’s Email Operation Violated At Least Six U.S. Criminal Laws
by Eric Zuesse

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/hillary-clintons-email-operation-violated-at-least-six-u-s-criminal-laws/

This is not an exclusive list, nor does it relate to charges that might possibly be made against Ms. Clinton on grounds other than the unquestionable and basic ground that she moved all of her State Department email operation to a private and non-secured computer outside the State Department, and then attempted to destroy the record of those emails. Here are the six criminal laws of that type, which, I here allege, she clearly broke

Was Elie Wiesel Really “The Conscience Of The World”?
by Mickey Z

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/was-elie-wiesel-really-the-conscience-of-the-world/

When news of Elie Wiesel’s death broke on July 2, the predictable paeans and plaudits flowed. President Barack Obama, for example, called his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner “the conscience of the world.” As for me, I instead reflected back to July 4, 2004, when Parade Magazine to hired Wiesel to pen a little something for Independence (sic) Day called “The America I Love” — for their patriotic cover story

Why Arabs Are A Divided People?
by Dr Mahboob A Khawaja

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/why-arabs-are-a-divided-people/

The contemporary Arab world is fraught with formidable forces of diverse enemies – the self, the authoritarian rulers and foreign interventionists – the ex-colonial masters. Common sense stops at various levels to reflect on the real problems. Greed of power, sectarian hatred and missing sense of moral and intellectual visionary leadership to deal with the real problems of political transformation. Once the Arab people were a model of progressive culture of Islamic unity respecting the human freedom of thoughts and actions, ethnic diversity, equality, social justice and emancipation of sustainable future.

Back To The Future With Laverne And Shirley: The Trivialisation Of The GMO Debate
by Colin Todhunter

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/back-to-the-future-with-laverne-and-shirley-the-trivialisation-of-the-gmo-debate/

Anyone who has followed the debate about GM food will be aware of such corporate-inspired banality: 1) Golden rice will save millions of lives 2) Greenpeace should be hauled into court for committing crimes against humanity 3) Critics of GM are stealing food from the bellies of the poor 4) Critics are liable for killing ‘billions’ – and they are also anti-science, Luddites, ideologues, elitists and so on.

Queen Of Chaos: The Misadventures Of Hillary Clinton
by Dr Ludwig Watzal

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/queen-of-chaos-the-misadventures-of-hillary-clinton/

Veteran journalist Diana Johnstone has given the American people and the world a wake-up call about Hillary Clinton. The author, who has been living in Paris for over 40 years, has characterized Ms. Clinton aptly. She is not interested in the existential problems of the man in the street, instead, she is the voice of the criminal big shot elite, starting with the Zionist Lobby, Wall Street, the military, the oligarchy, the intelligence and the corporate media. Their interests will be perfectly served by her and her even more dubious husband Bill. Both are going to run the US Empire as their private enterprise for the disadvantage of the American people but for their own perk.

Andy Piascik’s ‘In Motion’: Good Summer Reading On The Left
by Paul Buhle

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/07/05/andy-piasciks-in-motion-good-summer-reading-on-the-left/

Andy Piascik’s deft In Motion  had me when a lead character’s sister is writing red hot essays for Radical America, the magazine that I created some fifty years ago for the New Left. The thrill was vicarious and not only because merely literary: this novel takes place in 1976, somewhere in near post-industrial Connecticut, a few years after I left the editorial reins in other, steadier hands.
