Instead a jubilant Trump headquarters erupted in cheers as the news broke. Trump accepted the mantle of leadership with uncharacteristic humility nearly three hours after Election Day was over.

GOP keeps Senate control as Democrats fall short | 09 Nov 2016 | Republicans held onto their slim Senate majority Wednesday, a stinging blow to Democrats in a night full of them. Democrats had been nearly certain of retaking control but saw their hopes fizzle as endangered GOP incumbents won in Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and even Democrat-friendly Wisconsin. GOP-held New Hampshire remained too close to call in the early morning hours Wednesday, but even if Democrats eked out a win there it would not make a difference. Republicans started the night with a 54-46 majority in the Senate and were on track to end up with at least 52 seats, presuming they win a December run-off in Louisiana, as expected.

With Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton locked in a close battle for the White House, television networks said Republicans, as widely projected by analysts, would keep control of the House. Winners had been declared so far in 28 Senate races, with Democrats making a net gain of only a single seat so far, and only a handful of additional opportunities for them remaining undecided.

Trump takes Ohio: NBC News projections | Nov 08 2016 | The polls have closed in Ohio, and NBC News projects Donald Trump to be the winner. One reason may be voters' concerns about the economy. A senior GOP source in Ohio told NBC News their preliminary data shows it will come down to the wire.

It was too early or close to call a range of vital swing states, including Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia and North Carolina. While the outcome of those races is unclear, Fox News can project that Trump will win in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. In Nebraska, one of just two states that does not use a winner-take-all system of awarding delegates, Fox News can project that Trump will win four electoral votes. It is too early to say who will win the final vote in that state. Trump earlier claimed projected victories in South Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana, where running mate Mike Pence is governor, as well as Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Marco Rubio Re-Elected to U.S. Senate | 08 Nov 2016 | Senator Marco Rubio, who stumbled badly in a bid for the Republican presidential nomination and then jumped back into the race for his Senate seat, was re-elected on Tuesday to a second term.
