Progressive Breakfast: Sen. Bernie Sanders in Iowa: 'We're Fighting for the Future'

MORNING MESSAGE

Tim Wilkins
Sen. Bernie Sanders in Iowa: 'We're Fighting for the Future'
"We're fighting for the future of this planet, for our kids and grandchildren," Sen. Bernie Sanders told Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. "And to do your best, you've got to be involved in the political process."

Senate Health Care Vote, CBO Score Delayed

McCain surgery delays Senate health vote, CBO score. CNN:“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Saturday evening he would postpone a vote on the bill because Republican Sen. John McCain is recovering from surgery in his home state of Arizona this week. McCain’s absence from the Senate would have imperiled the bill because McConnell needs support from 50 of the 52 GOP senators to pass it, and two GOP senators, Maine’s Susan Collins and Kentucky’s Rand Paul, have already said they won’t vote for the legislation.”

MAGAnomics Unveiled

CBO says Trump budget has unrealistic expectation of growth. Vox:“The CBO says Trump’s budget office was relying on economic growth numbers that were way too optimistic. The White House said its budget would spur 3 percent economic growth, while the CBO estimated it would be closer to 1.8 percent. The CBO also said Trump’s budget office was using suspect math and didn’t give out enough information about the president’s tax plan, a key component to forecast economic growth.”
Why ‘MAGAnomics’ Isn’t Likely To Work. NPR:“The simple plan: Ratchet the economic growth rate up to a sustained 3 percent annually. That’s an ambitious target, given current levels of around 2 percent. But there are a couple of problems. One is that sustained 3-percent growth is highly unlikely — and it’s not a simple proposition… Another problem is that some Trump policies could in fact work against achieving that level of economic growth… And a Congressional Budget Office analysis released the day after Mulvaney’s op-ed delivered a blow to “MAGAnomics,” estimating the Trump budget would fall well short of its economic growth goal.”

Suit Against Trump Voting Commission

Common Cause suit challenges public release of voting data. Common Dreams:“The Trump administration on Thursday published the trove of email comments it received about the commission but did so in unredacted form. In some cases, that meant the White House posted ‘not only names, but email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers, and places of employment of people worried about such information being made available to the public.’

Who Protests? Nuns, Golf Fans

PA Nuns build chapel to block pipeline. WaPo:“The pipeline company first sought without success to negotiate with the nuns. Now as Williams Cos. tries to seize the land by eminent domain, the order is gearing up for a fight in the courtroom — and a possible fight in the field, as well. There, smack in the path of the planned pipeline, the nuns have dedicated a new outdoor chapel.’We just wanted to symbolize, really, what is already there: This is holy ground,’ said Sister Janet McCann, a member of the national leadership team of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, whose 2,000 nuns around the world have made environmental protection and activism a key part of their mission.”
Anti-Trump protests staged at U.S. Women’s Open. Reuters:“First local activists sported pink umbrellas on the warm, sunny day and spelled out messages written on their white tee-shirts as they posed in front of the Trump National clubhouse. ‘RESIST!’ was the message on the front as seven women wore one character each on their chest. They then turned around and formed the message ‘This is not NORMAL’. National group UltraViolet waited until they sighted President Trump enter his private viewing box that looks out on the 15th green, 16th tee and 18th green before revealing a message on their purple tee-shirts – ‘USGA: DUMP SEXIST TRUMP’.”
In Iowa, Bernie Sanders calls for a political revolution. Des Moines Register:“‘These are not utopian ideas,’ Sanders said. ‘They are not radical ideas. They are fairly common sensical ideas that can happen when you have a government that is directed by the people themselves and not by wealthy powerful corporate interests.'”

Republicans Working Against Workers. Leo Gerard:“Ever since Republicans took power, they’ve labored to destroy worker protections. They’ve taken money from workers’ pockets and handed it to one-percenters on a silver platter, bought by contributions form the same one percent.”
