Charlottesville Leaders Call for Racial Equity
The widespread outrage sparked by white supremacist violence in Charlottesville may prompt dialogue and action nationwide to promote racial equity, according to leaders from the Virginia city. “They wanted to think they could intimidate us, but it didn’t work – it actually backfired,” said Wes Bellamy, Charlottesville’s vice mayor. “We’re now stronger, we’re much more encouraged. We’re rallying, even moreso together."
Peaceful Anti-Hate Rallies Nationwide
Peaceful protests denounce racism nationwide. NYT:“Tens of thousands of demonstrators, emboldened and unnerved by the eruption of fatal violence in Virginia last weekend, surged into the nation’s streets and parks on Saturday to denounce racism, white supremacy and Nazism. Demonstrations were boisterous but broadly peaceful, even as tension and worry coursed through protests from Boston Common, the nation’s oldest public park, to Hot Springs, Ark., and to the bridges that cross the Willamette River in Portland, Ore. Other rallies played out in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Memphis and New Orleans, among other cities.”
Climate Change Panel Disbanded
The Trump administration just disbanded a federal advisory committee on climate change. WaPo:“The Trump administration has decided to disband the federal advisory panel for the National Climate Assessment, a group aimed at helping policymakers and private-sector officials incorporate the government’s climate analysis into long-term planning. The charter for the 15-person Advisory Committee for the Sustained National Climate Assessment — which includes academics as well as local officials and corporate representatives — expires Sunday. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s acting administrator, Ben Friedman, informed the committee’s chair that the agency would not renew the panel.”
Trump Evangelical Advisor Resigns
Megachurch pastor resigns from Trump’s evangelical council. WaPo:“Most of President Trump’s evangelical advisers have stood by him this week following much criticism over his response to violent clashes in Charlottesville, even as several CEOs left business advisory councils and members of his Committee on the Arts and Humanities have announced they are leaving the panel. In a first for his evangelical advisory council, New York City megachurch pastor A.R. Bernard announced Friday that he had stepped down from the unofficial board of evangelical advisers to Trump.”
Bannon Back to Breitbart
Bannon back at Breitbart after White House ouster. The Hill:“President Trump’s former chief strategist Stephen Bannon returned to Breitbart News on Friday just hours after parting ways with the White House. Bannon has reclaimed the title of executive chairman for Breitbart and directed the outlet’s Friday editorial meeting, the website said in a statement on Friday.”
Activists Spur CEO Defections
The Activists Who Helped Shut Down Trump’s CEO Councils. AlterNet:“The CEOs who made up two White House advisory councils have fled like rats on a sinking ship. Their exodus — a dramatic rebuke of Donald Trump — came within 48 hours of the incendiary August 15 press conference where the President praised some of the participants of last week’s white supremacist rampage in Charlottesville, Virginia. But many of the CEOs on these councils had been under heavy pressure to disavow Trump’s agenda of hate and racism even before Charlottesville. That pressure came from grassroots activists… The campaign, working through a web site called Corporate Backers of Hate, detailed the connections between the nine companies and the Trump administration and encouraged people to send emails to both the CEOs involved and members of their corporate boards.”
