BILLERICA -- Lynnway Auto Auction has been cited for numerous hazards in connection with a May accident in which five people died, resulting in more than $267,000 in proposed penalties.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Lynnway for electrical, struck-by and other hazards. Two of the citations were for repeat violations, which are penalties of $69,713 for each one.
On May 3, OSHA inspected the facility after people were struck by a SUV and five died as a result of their injuries. The agency issued 16 citations to the company for motor-vehicle hazards, blocked exit routes, violations of the hazard communication standard and record-keeping deficiencies.
Lynnway faces proposed penalties totaling $267,081.
"This company was cited in 2014 for exposing employees to similar hazards," OSHA Regional Administrator Galen Blanton said in a statement. "It is critically important that employers remain vigilant about safety and implement required safety measures."
In the summer of 2014, OSHA cited Lynnway for exposing employees to struck-by and crushing hazards from vehicles.
Three years later on May 3, Lynnway was again cited for this violation.
"The employer failed to protect employees from struck-by and crushing hazards from vehicles while working throughout the entire auction premises," the OSHA report reads. "Employees exposed to these hazards include but are not limited to auction managers, auction staff, auction ring men, lane chiefs, drivers, maintenance personnel, lot attendants, security personnel and auto mechanics
