Midterm election results: Lakeville’s Norman Orrall takes 12th Bristol State Rep seat over Middleboro selectman Allin Frawley to highlight exciting election day

The Tuesday, Nov. 6 midterm election just about lived up to the hype received in the lead-up, and reports from polling places across the region indicated voter turnout was high, in some cases matching numbers usually reserved for presidential election years.
On the national stage, Democrats took the House of Representatives and Republicans added to their advantage in the Senate; we’ll let readers sort out what that Red-Blue split in congress might mean in the days, weeks and months ahead.
Locally, the contest for State Representative in the 12th Bristol District was a focal point for voters in Middleboro and Lakeville, with Lakeville Republican Norman Orrall preserving the seat for the GOP with a win over Democrat and Middleboro Selectman Allin Frawley.
The Gazette caught up with both candidates Tuesday afternoon at the polling place at the Ted Williams Camp in Lakeville. Orrall and Frawley both expressed confidence, but of course, only one could take the prize.
“The turnout has been great from what I can see,” Orrall said. “Lakeville is looking fantastic... the support from Lakeville has been great. Been talking to a lot of people today and feeling very confident. I’m looking forward to tonight.”
As expected Orrall and Frawley each won their home towns. According to unofficial counts released late Tuesday night, Orrall took Lakeville by a margin of just under 1,000 votes and Frawley had the advantage in the Middleboro vote by a margin of about 250.
Lakeville’s Keiko Orrall, who gave up her current seat at 12th Bristol State Rep to pursue a bid for State Treasurer, was unsuccessful in her challenge to upend Democrat Deb Goldberg. Orrall had strong support in her hometown of Lakeville, favored by a 3-to-1 margin over Goldberg. But Goldberg took about 70 percent of the statewide vote.
Two more State Rep races relevant to Middleboro residents were in play, too: Susan Gifford Williams preserved her seat in the 2nd Plymouth District and Kathy LaNatra won out 12th Plymouth District.
Three ballot questions were also up for a vote, with Question 1, which aimed to set “patient-to-nurse ratios” in Massachusetts medical facilities, stirring up much debate in recent months. Ultimately, Question 1 was met with a decisive “No” vote from Massachusetts voters.
Question 2, passed by a large margin. From the State House News Service: Question 2 “will require state government officials to create a 15-member, unpaid commission to recommend potential amendments to the U.S. Constitution ‘to establish that corporations do not have the same Constitutional rights as human beings and that campaign contributions and expenditures may be regulated.’
The law requires the governor, secretary of state, attorney general, House speaker, and Senate president to each appoint three members to the commission. The commission would be subject to the state’s open meeting and public records laws, and its first report is due Dec. 31, 2019.”
And a “Yes” on Question 3 preserved state law that “protects transgender people from discrimination in public accommodations, including bathrooms and locker rooms,” via the Associated Press.
At the top of the ballot, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren was a winner over Republican challenger Geoff Diehl; Republican Governor Charlie Baked cruised to victory over Democratic challenger Jay Gonzalez; and Democrat Maura Healy was reelected as Attorney General.
Again, unofficially, Middleboro reported a voter turnout of 10,000 plus, or just shy of 60 percent of eligible voters, while Lakeville reported just short of 5,500, or nearly 70 percent of eligible voters.
