Fall River recall election already five candidates deep; one is the mayor

FALL RIVER — By noon on Friday, the first day to take out nomination papers to run in the March 12 mayoral recall election, five potential candidates took out petitions to run, including the object of the recall, Mayor Jasiel Correia II.
“This morning I took out nomination papers with my loving grandmother by my side,” Correia said in a Facebook post.
Correia, in addition to facing a recall election, is also in a legal battle with 13 federal counts of wire and tax fraud pending in Boston federal court.
The four (so far) possible opponents of Correia had similar themes as to why they wanted to run for mayor.
Fall River School Committee member Paul Coogan took out nomination papers and said he’s decided to run for mayor to restore public trust in the city.
“To restore trust in our public servants and a positive light for everybody, around the clock and not just at election time but day in and day out,” said Coogan. “I think we can do a much better job.”
Former city councilor and School Committee member Kyle Riley was first in line before the Board of Elections opened to pick up his nomination papers.
“I really feel we haven’t been stable for a long time, and in the mayor’s office there’s been a lot of turnover,” said Riley. “I’m committed to this community. I’ve been committed to this community since I was a little kid.”
Now with six kids of his own, “I feel like I’m just part of the fabric of the community.”
This will be Luis Cabral Jr.’s second run for mayor. At one time, he said, he was a supporter of Correia.
“The issue is with recent news, and just the integrity of the city, we’ve become a national laughing stock,” Cabral said. “So I think we need someone with a stronger backbone and from a different school of thought who doesn’t think the same way as most of our city councilman do, or anyone else who runs the city. I want to provide a new option because I think the people of Fall River deserve that.”
Former assistant football coach Ronald Arthure Gagnon also took out his nomination papers on Friday morning.
Not being a political insider, Gagnon said that he doesn’t know what state the city is in and its time to take a look.
“If I’m lucky enough to get elected, I’ll sit down with all the department heads and get thoroughly briefed and see what we have to do to get the city moving forward,” Gagnon said.
Candidates have 13 days to collect the signatures of 300 registered voters with the deadline to obtain papers on Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. The last day to submit nomination papers is Jan. 22.
