Panagore lands $230K MBTA job

Provincetown Town Manager David Panagore named chief administrative officer for public transportation agency.

PROVINCETOWN — Town Manager David Panagore is wrapping up his last day on the job and moving on to a $230,000 post with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Panagore has accepted the job as the MBTA’s chief administrative officer, according to an official with the public transportation agency for the greater Boston area.

Earlier this month, Panagore said he would be stepping down from the town manager gig for a state job, but could not say what his new position was before getting the green light from the state.

His official last day in Provincetown is May 10, but today will be his last day in town hall due to a previously planned vacation.

Panagore’s new salary will be $230,000 annually and his start date with the MBTA is May 13. Panagore made $160,616 as town manager, according to the 2018 town report.

A University of Massachusetts Amherst graduate, with a J.D. and master’s degree in public administration from Suffolk University, Panagore took over the reins in Provincetown in 2015. He previously worked as the executive director of the New Haven Parking Authority and the chief operating officer for the city of Hartford.

″...he brings experience and a proven track record of success in the public sector, including helping guide the financial recovery and revitalization of the City of Springfield and the turnaround of the financially challenged City of Hartford,” MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak wrote in an internal announcement on Friday. “These experiences will be invaluable in meeting the MBTA’s goals and objectives and I am confident that David will be an excellent match for this position and a strong asset to the T.”

The job is a tremendous chance to be of service to the state, Panagore said Friday.

“It’s just an incredible opportunity to help,” said Panagore from where he was sitting in Lopes Square.

The Provincetown Select Board is scheduled to talk about the search for a new manager at its April 29 meeting.

Panagore has said he plans to continue to live in Provincetown.

“While my employment will change, my commitment to this community has not, as my residency, voting and participation will not,” he said previously. “For the opportunity I have had, and the work we have accomplished, I deeply and sincerely thank you all.”

Panagore will report to the general manager and he will be responsible for overseeing the MBTA’s administrative and financial functions, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.
