Why would we ignore childhood asthma caused by air pollution?
THE COST OF COAL: WHO PAYS THE PRICE, AND WHO POCKETS THE PROFITS?
"Our comprehensive review finds that the best estimate for the total economically quantifiable costs [of coal-based power generation].....amount to some $345.3 billion, adding close to 17.8¢/kWh of electricity generated from coal….These and the more difficult to quantify externalities are borne by the general public."
-- Dr. Paul Epstein of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School
Half of U.S. families live in places with unsafe air. Each year, coal pollution leads to some 12,000 emergency room visits. Pollution from coal-fired power plants creates smog, which can cause acute breathing difficulties, make conditions like bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma worse or even fatal, and, if chronic, cause lung disease and cancer. In the U.S., 1 out of 10 children suffers from asthma, the number-one illness causing kids to miss school,.
Last Wednesday the Sierra Club and Sierra Magazine released a photography project examining the effects of coal on the lives of everyday Americans. The feature, 'Cost of Coal', follows the life-cycle of coal, using sharp, poignant images to show the impact that coal mining, burning and disposal has on families across the country. It includes an 18-page photo spread accompanied by a new, interactive website with more than 100 powerful photos and videos of individuals affected by coal.
At the 'Cost of Coal' website you can browse through slideshows, organized by location and story. You can learn about the effects of mountaintop removal mining on a husband and wife in Appalachia, coal burning on the health of a family in Detroit and coal ash waste disposal on the entire Moapa Band of Paiutes community in Nevada. You can also take action to help support solutions that would curb the dangerous mining, burning and waste disposal practices associated with coal mining and power generation.
