Think Adoption!

Before you buy a pet, Think Adoption and Save A Life!

Kitty, your picture breaks my heart. It's bad enough that you were brought to the ACC with apparent urine stains on your feet. The ACC actually treated you and you started to show signs of improvement, as recently as yesterday. So why are you on the list tonight? Only the ACC can answer that. This gorgeous gal is going to die tomorrow, even though she appears to be on the mend. This is wrong on sooooo many levels. Don't let this happen. Please, start sharing Kitty now so we can get her out and help her heal mind, body and soul!

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the cat. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the cats’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the cat. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how animals fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular cat, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

Joyce is a 7-year-old dog who has been existing at the hands of people who didn't care about this dog one tiny bit. She is thin as a rail, was spayed by the ACC because she came in with pyometra, and only weighs 36 pounds. That can happen to any stray dog, you say? Here's the thing: Joyce also presented with long toenails, and any dog who has been living on the streets is going to have short nails. Someone allowed Joyce to sink into this condition and when she had sank far enough, they tossed her into the shelter like a popped balloon. It's not surprising that Joyce earned an Orange rating on her initial intake exam. She wasn't feeling well, you can bet she was hungry, and let's face it---this girl has had very little reason to be impressed with the humanity she has known. Until now. Tonight can be the start of a whole new way of life for Joyce. She can totally luck out and have someone step up for her, someone who will get her the medical care she needs, make sure she has delicious treats and a whole lot of love. Someone can turn things around for Joyce right now. The other option is, she can die tomorrow morning at 6am. It's up to you. What do you want the outcome to be? Share and pledge if you want Joyce's story to have a happy ending, beginning right now.

MOST RECENT MEDICAL RATING, BEHAVIOR RATING & WEIGHT
03/26/2013 Exam Type BEHAVIOR - Medical Rating is 3 NC - MAJOR CONDITIONS NOT CONTAGIOUS, Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 36.0 LBS.

Note: Dog growls before the assessment as Assessor places collar. The Squeeze item was not conducted due to behavior demonstrated on the Sensitivity items. Helper: 0959950 Joyce showed some aggression during these portions of the assessment: growled, snarled or snapped, and would be best suited for a home with no small children. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Joyce growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. She showed some concerning behavior during toy tests - stiffening and growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. Joyce only displayed minimal interest in the rawhide, but did not approach the helper dog on the interaction. Look: 2. Dog's eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 5. Dog freezes, growls and tries to bite. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Food 5. Dog bites assess-a-hand. Toy 4. Dog freezes and growls. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, and licks, then walks away. Dog - dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog.

Joyce is a shy Labrador retriever that is waiting for someone to help her come out of her shell. She will receive treats at the front of the cage then she will retreat to the back of the cage after receiving the treat. While with us she was spayed because she had pyometra and will need someone willing to give her a loving home, affection, and time to come out of her shell.
