Save A Life

If you're considering adding a furry member to your family, PLEASE think of local shelters and rescue groups first.

Most animals left at shelters will be euthanized, frequently by gassing.

Please support Spay and Neuter programs to end this senseless tragedy.

[NOTE: Mange is easily treatable.]
Eve hasn't been comfortable in her own skin for quite some time :( This pretty three year old has demodex mange. Fortunately, she also has an angel. A donor has graciously agreed to provide free vet care for mange to the New Hope Partner who pulls her. Please share!

... I am an unaltered female, black brindle and white Pit Bull Terrier mix.

The shelter staff think I am about 3 years old.

I weigh 40 pounds.

I was found in NY 11385.

Generalized alopecia seen all over the body
scabs seen all over the body
hair coat dirty

heart worm test negative

NOSF

I have been at the shelter since Jun 29, 2013

For more information on adopting please read the following: http://urgentpetsondeathrow.org/must-read/

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

(Pinal County, Arizona) A MUST READ: WE ARE NOT THE SHELTER. WE ARE VOLUNTEERS THAT NETWORK THE PINAL DOGS at Pinal Animal Care and Control (PCACC). PCACC usually euthanizes at 5PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but may euthanize sick and injured dogs at any time. Any dog that is past the "Due Out Date" may be euthanized.... *Dogs that HAVE NOT reached their "Due Out Date" are not available yet, but holds can be placed on them and they still need to be networked so they can get out ASAP. *Some may indicate a "Commitment" or that they are "Safe" in comments, but WE DO NOT CONSIDER THEM SAFE UNTIL WE HAVE CONFIRMATION THAT THEY HAVE LEFT THE BUILDING. Therefore, they stay in the album and BACK-UPS WILL BE PLACED if requested. **WE DO NOT HANDLE ANY SPONSORSHIP MONEY. This is up to the applicable individuals on how they want to do this.** *Please note that we do not work at the shelter and we do not have a say in these time frames. We are only volunteers who are committed to networking these dogs to save their lives.* *We are not always provided with how an animal arrived or its due out date, so YOU NEED to go by the information below in these cases DUE OUT DATES: STRAYS W/O TAGS/CHIPS are held for 72 hours by the shelter before they are transferred to the Adoption Wing or are in danger of being PTS. STRAYS W/ TAGS/CHIPS are held for 7 days while the shelter tries to contact the owner before they are transferred to the Adoption Wing or are in danger of being PTS. OWNER SURRENDER: These dogs only have 24hrs before they are transferred to the Adoption Wing or are in danger of being PTS.**We do not work for the shelter, we are volunteers that network the Pinal dogs to help save their lives. *TO COMMIT TO A DOG - we can notify the shelter to hold a dog. You MUST DO THIS this by using the CONTACT BUTTON on the face page. *You can help by adopting, fostering through a rescue, sharing their photos, and by sponsoring specific dogs. ✺˜”*° ✺ Let Freedom Ring ✺°*”˜✺ Another day is coming to an end, and as we all celebrate our freedom, these dogs ~ these wonderful, loyal dogs that were once part of families, have nothing to celebrate. They are the dogs of NYCACC who have been put on the dreaded "TBD" list for Friday! They could (and should) have been part of the festivities of the day, playing ball, romping with the kids, swimming in a creek or a pool....the list is endless, as these dogs have so much to give! Can you find it in your heart to give one of these dogs his or her freedom? Please pledge/share/foster/adopt now ~ tomorrow may be too late. And thank you! They deserve freedom too!

Getting to Zero

The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home in Australia was the first pound in New South Wales to sign up to The Getting To Zero Euthanasia (G2Z). It's an initiative established by the Animal Welfare League of Queensland (AWLQ) which is designed to provide resources for pounds and shelters who consider that it is an ethical imperative to pursue all available options to save or rehome homeless pets as opposed to using euthanasia as a default position.

Pounds and shelters that publicly commit to the G2Z goals are able to work with AWLQ. Together the shelters jointly design tailored programs for each specific shelter, allowing them to improve rehoming rates and better engage with their community. These include foster care programs, volunteer programs, marketing initiatives for adoptable pets and working with rescue groups and veterinary clinics.

The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home made a touching short film a few years ago called Getting to Zero by Damien Toogood (see the video below) to help promote G2Z to the community.

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home said they had dog reclaim and rehoming rates of around 88% last year. They handle about 3,500 animals each year with a staff of 10 people, plus a dedicated team of volunteers.

G2Z initiative is similar to the No Kill Equation which has been evolving in the United States. The Animal Welfare League of Queensland wrote on their website, "It has been identified by AWLQ and other proactive shelters internationally that 90% of stray and surrendered dogs and cats in a large city are either healthy or treatable and should be rehomed."

In 2011, AWLQ wrote that, "Through the application of the Getting to Zero model, 85% of the 7000 stray and surrendered cats and dogs in Gold Coast City (population 500,000 people and growing by 13,000 to 16,000 each year) were saved i.e. reclaimed or rehomed in 2009/10. This includes 91% of all incoming dogs and 76% of incoming cats in 2009/10." They continued on to write, "This save rate is much higher than most other pounds and shelters where euthanasia rates are on average about 40% of dogs and 60% of cats."

A final reminder from The Tree Kisser to PLEASE protect your pets tonight!

Click the photo for some helpful tips to keep your beloved fur babies safe and secure. Share far and wide- you never know whose life you may save by raising awareness.
PLEASE don't forget to keep your pets safe tonight!!

Many dogs and cats panic due to the terrifying sounds produced by fireworks. In this state of frenzy, som...e have gone so far as to jump through glass windows to flee! Here are some quick tips to help keep your babies safe and secure:

- Take your dog on a long walk before fireworks begin. If they're worn out, they'll have less energy to run.
- If possible, stay home with your pets to comfort and protect them.
- Close doors and windows, and play loud television or music to drown out the noise produced by fireworks.
- Make sure that your pets have proper, updated identification on their tags.

If you have any extra tips or pieces of advice, please feel free to share in the comments!
