KI pills aren't the answer
Remove the threat of Pilgrim now
Article | Letters to the Editor |
To the Editor:
Due to the acknowledged dangers to the public from the continuing operation of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, through the MA Department of Public Health, Entergy Nuclear Corporation must fund potassium iodide (KI) for residents on the Cape and Islands. A new supply is now available in every town. KI is a drug purchased with utility company money for the public due to the real risk to our health, particularly infants and children, when exposed to radioactive particles produced by this industry. Pills for the public?
Where in a democracy is it acceptable that a corporation can threaten the public health and safety for their profit?
The reality is that our children are most at risk and having KI on hand is a important... however, at the same time, we must speak out to remove this threat and Pilgrim Nuclear should remain shutdown as it is today. Call Governor Patrick and request that he, as the chief safety officer for the State of Massachusetts, call on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to close Pilgrim because the public safety cannot be assured. We know there is no escape from the Cape and KI is a corporate anti-cancer pill.
Nuclear power nearby? Got KI?
More information on KI is available on the MEMA website.
