Israel using flechette shells in Gaza 20 Jul 2014 The Israeli military is using flechette shells, which spray thousands of tiny and potentially lethal metal darts, in its military operation in Gaza. Six flechette shells were fired towards the village of Khuzaa, east of Khan Younis, on 17 July, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) did not deny using the shells in the conflict. B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organisation, describes a flechette shell as "an anti-personnel weapon that is generally fired from a tank."


Gaza crisis: Palestinian death toll climbs past 500 as hospital is hit 21 July 2014 The Palestinian death toll in the conflict between Hamas and Israel reached 548 on Monday as officials said four were killed when a Gaza hospital was hit by Israeli fire ... It followed the bloodiest day of the conflict so far on Sunday when at least 120 Palestinians were killed in Shujai'iya, a third of them women and children. Thirteen Israeli soldiers were also killed – two of them US citizens – in the heaviest loss of life for the Israeli military in years.


Israel kills 100 Gazans in one day 20 Jul 2014 At least one hundred Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip in one day. According to local reports on Sunday, as many as 66 Palestinians were killed only in the Shujaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City. Medical authorities called the killings in the area a "massacre", saying they have never seen such a level of violence before...According to figures provided by emergency services, the total number of people killed since the beginning of the Israeli operation on July 8 stands at 469.


Seven Israeli soldiers killed in last 24 hours in Gaza --IDF death toll rises to 25 21 Jul 2014 Two militant cells infiltrated southern Israel via a tunnel from the Gaza Strip on Monday, as Israel began the 14th day of Operation Protective Edge. Casualties were reported among Israel Defense Forces troops. Roads were closed and residents ordered to remain indoors until just after 10 A.M., when the incident was declared over. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces advanced into the Strip overnight, and clashes were reported in a number of areas. Two apparent tunnel sites were located by forces.


13 Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza City battle 20 Jul 2014 Thirteen Israeli soldiers were killed in heavy fighting in a Gaza City neighborhood. The soldiers from the Golani Brigade were killed since late Saturday night in Shujaiya, the Israel Defense Forces announced Sunday evening, bringing the death toll of Israeli soldiers since the launch late last week of the Gaza ground operation to 18. In Shujaiya, seven of the soldiers died when their armored personnel carrier was hit by an anti-tank missile.

London protests call for end to Israeli military action in Gaza 19 July 2014 Thousands of protesters gathered in London on Saturday to call for an end to Israeli military action in Gaza and "justice and freedom" for Palestine. Up to 15,000 people are expected to take part in the march, following a route from Downing Street to the Israeli embassy in Kensington.


200 pro-Palestinian activists rally in Indianapolis against Israel 19 Jul 2014 More than 200 protesters gathered in Downtown Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon to support the Palestinian cause and condemn U.S. support of Israel in the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Chanting "free, free Palestine" and "Israel is an apartheid state," the crowd met on Monument Circle to protest Senate Resolution 498, a resolution passed by the U.S. Senate this week that reaffirms U.S. support for Israel. "It's a shame that our government is supporting such killings," Maya Alshawa, one of the march's organizers, said of the Palestinian deaths.


Five car bombs in Baghdad kill 28 20 Jul 2014 Five car bombs killed at least 28 people in mostly Shi'ite Muslim neighbourhoods in Baghdad on Saturday, police and medics said. The first explosion, a suicide car bombing, killed nine people at a police checkpoint in the Abu Dsheer district in the south of the capital, the sources said. Four other car bombs killed a total of 19 people: one in the Bayaa district in southwestern Baghdad, one in the western district of Jihad and two in northern Baghdad's Kadhimiya, which boasts a major Shi'ite shrine.


Iran eliminates sensitive stockpile under interim nuclear deal: IAEA 20 Jul 2014 Iran has moved to eliminate its most sensitive stockpile of enriched uranium gas under an interim nuclear deal reached with six world powers last year, according to a monthly update by the U.N. nuclear watchdog obtained by Reuters on Sunday. The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed that Iran had met the terms of the six-month agreement, under which it limited its atomic activities in exchange for some easing of sanctions that are crippling its economy.


Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner pleads not guilty to terror charges 18 Jul 2014 An ex-Guantanamo Bay prisoner has formally pleaded not guilty to seven terror offence in connection with the conflict in Syria. Moazzam Begg, 45, appeared via video link from jail as a final charge sheet was read out at the Old Bailey before judge Mr Justice Wilkie. Begg sat throughout the hearing and said "not guilty" to each of the charges...The next five charges are for the possession of "an article" for a purpose connected to terrorism between 31 December 2012 and 26 February 2014.


Pro-Russian rebels hand over MH17 black boxes to Malaysian officials --Rebels allow experts limited access to site and bodies --Five killed as clashes break out in Donetsk 21 Jul 2014 The Guardian's Shaun Walker reports that the "black boxes will be passed to the Malaysians right now – at 1.10am on the 11th floor of this occupied government building." The Malaysian delegation has taken possession of the boxes...Heavy fighting broke out in Donetsk between rebels and the Ukrainian military, killing five people.


Obama: 'Burden is on Russia' to ensure full access to MH17 site 21 July 2014 Asked about what steps world powers should next take, Poroshenko says nations should use "all opportunities, starting [with decisions] from the UN security council...He also denounces the "irresponsibility" of rebels and Russia, noting how much time passed before investigators could reach the scene and before Russia made a clear call for a transparent investigation. He says dialogue continues with Russian representatives.


Putin: Task force at MH17 crash site not enough, full-scale international team needed 21 Jul 2014 The tragic Malaysian MH17 flight crash must not be politicised and the international experts on the scene should be able to carry out their work in complete safety, Russian President Vladimir Putin said. "There are already representatives of Donetsk and Lugansk working there, as well as representatives of the emergencies ministry of Ukraine and others. But this is not enough," Putin said officially commenting on the tragic event on Sunday. "This task force is not enough," Putin emphasized. "We need more, we need a fully representative group of experts to be working at the site under the guidance of ICAO, the relevant international commission."


Ukrainian Su-25 fighter detected in close approach to MH17 before crash - Moscow 21 Jul 2014 The Russian military detected a Ukrainian SU-25 fighter jet gaining height towards the MH17 Boeing on the day of the catastrophe. Kiev must explain why the military jet was tracking the passenger airplane, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "A Ukraine Air Force military jet was detected gaining height, its distance from the Malaysian Boeing was 3 to 5km," said the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the HQ of Russia's military forces, Lieutenant-General Andrey Kartopolov, speaking at a media conference in Moscow on Monday.


MH17 Was Escorted by Ukrainian Fighter Jets - Spanish Air Traffic Controller 18 Jul 2014 Above are "tweets by a Spanish air traffic controller at Kiev Airport." The Spanish air controller suggests that the order to down MH17 came from the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior. The Spanish air controller also said that the MH17 flight was escorted by Ukrainian fighter jets minutes before it was downed.


MH17: Rebel leader claims bodies were planted 19 Jul 2014 A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash - suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off. The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna has quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that "a significant number of the bodies weren't fresh", adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 was shot down about 3am, NZT, yesterday, killing all 298 people aboard.


Presumed MH17 data recorders found in E. Ukraine, taken to Donetsk - militia 20 Jul 2014 Items presumed to be the data recorders from the crashed Malaysian plane have been found and delivered to Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, according to the leader of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk. "Aircraft parts looking like black boxes were found at the site of the plane crash. They are currently in Donetsk, in the People's Republic's (DPR) government headquarters, under my personal control," Aleksandr Boroday, the republic's prime minister, told reporters. The self-defense forces are ready to hand the data recorders over to international monitors "in case they arrive," he said.


Heathrow worker who left UK to fight with pro-Russian rebels says Ukraine and the West shot down MH17 to smear Russia 20 Jul 2014 A construction worker who lived and worked in Britain has today been revealed as a pro-Russian rebel who left the UK to fight in Crimea. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline today, Beness Aijo, 29, said: 'I think that this plane has been attacked by Ukrainian military forces - maybe in co-operation with some Western Security forces. This plane was flying at 10,000 metres high, but Donetsk Republik army have anti-plane guns which can flight no higher than 5,000 metres. Second a Ukrainian air force officer told the Malaysian plane to go 600 metres lower. I think it was asked in order to attack it easier.'


Tsarnaev friend guilty of conspiracy, obstruction 21 Jul 2014 A former University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student has been found guilty in federal court of obstruction of justice and conspiring to obstruct justice by hindering the investigation into his college friend, Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Azamat Tazhayakov was convicted by a jury in US District Court in Boston. The panel had deliberated about 14 hours over three days.


Snowden's life in Russia: 'Much happier than be unfairly tried in US' 20 Jul 2014 Although he is "probably three steps from death" considering his way of living, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden is quite happy and leading a "pretty open life" and not feeling any "oppressive surveillance" in Russia, he told The Guardian. "There's actually not that much difference," Snowden said in an interview with the Guardian when asked about the year he spent in Russia. "I don't live in absolute secrecy. I live a pretty open life."


US terrorist database 'snowballs' - over 1.5 million added in last five years 18 Jul 2014 The U.S. government is rapidly expanding the number of names it accepts for inclusion on its terrorist watch list, with more than 1.5 million added in the last five years, according to numbers divulged by the government in a civil lawsuit. About 99 percent of the names submitted are accepted, leading to criticism that the government is "wildly loose" in its use of the list...In fiscal 2012, submitted names increased to 336,712, and in fiscal 2013 -- the most recent year provided -- nominations jumped to 468,749.


Maryland smallpox storage also held 300 vials with dengue, influenza 17 Jul 2014 The cold storage in Bethesda, where several sealed vials with smallpox were discovered last month, also had over 300 vials likely containing pathogens like dengue, influenza and rickettsia, it was revealed. The 327 vials were stored at a the National Institutes of Health stashed in 12 boxes in a corner of a cold storage room, the Food and Drug Administration reported Wednesday. The administration has been using the facility since 1972.


Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits off Japan's northeast coast: USGS 21 Jul 2014 A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's northeast coast early Monday morning, the US Geological Survey said. The agency said the quake struck at 02:32am (1732 GMT Sunday) in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 70 kilometres (44 miles) north east of Japan's Hokkaido island, close to the disputed Russian-administered Kuril Islands. USGS had earlier given the quake a slightly higher 6.6 magnitude and a shallower 60 kilometre depth reading.


Protesters fight to save Arturo, the polar bear sweltering in baking hot zoo 13 Jul 2014 Arturo, the last polar bear in Argentina, is not well. The sad animal paces back and forth in his enclosure at the Mendoza Zoo...The polar bear is thought to have become depressed since the death of his long-term companion two years ago, which has left him lonely and bereft, the Sunday People reported. Protesters have been circulating online petitions for months in an attempt to have Arturo relocated to another zoo, with one campaign on change.org clocking up nearly 25,000 572,500 signatures [which everyone needs to sign and share].


Gov. Rick Perry deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to border 21 Jul 2014 Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, announced Monday that he is activating up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as he accuses the federal government of offering "lip service" on border security. The announcement comes as the Obama administration is still struggling to deal with the influx of more than 50,000 unaccompanied minors, most from Central America, who have crossed into the United States in the past year.
