CIA runs shadow war with Afghan militia, implicated in civilian killings and torture | 03 Dec 2015 | (Tor Ghar, Afghanistan) Months after the Obama administration [lied and] declared combat operations over in Afghanistan, the CIA continues to run a shadow war in the eastern part of the country, overseeing an Afghan proxy called the Khost Protection Force, according to local officials, former commanders of that militia and Western advisers. The highly secretive paramilitary unit has been implicated in civilian killings, torture, questionable detentions, arbitrary arrests and use of excessive force in controversial night raids, abuses that have mostly not been previously disclosed... In several attacks, witnesses described hearing English being spoken by armed men who had interpreters with them, suggesting American operatives were present during assaults where extreme force was used.
Back to Iraq: Ashton Carter opens door to U.S. ground support for Iraqi forces in Ramadi | 09 Dec 2015 | U.S. Gen. Paul Selva withstood one of the most biting rebuttals of the country's ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] strategy Wednesday when he told lawmakers the Pentagon would not impose a no-fly zone on Syria because of possible blowback from Russia and Syria...Pentagon officials offered some news of expanding the fight against ISIS, saying they were likely to provide Apache helicopters to Iraqi forces looking to retake Ramadi [Yeah, right!] from ISIS and said they were close to securing special forces help from Arab allies. Carter raised the prospect Wednesday that U.S. military advisers could accompany Iraqi forces on the ground in the effort to take back Ramadi.
NATO says won't send ground troops to fight IS: report | 07 Dec 2015 | NATO has ruled out sending ground troops to fight against Islamic State militants in Syria, NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg told a Swiss newspaper, stressing the need to bolster local forces in the conflict. "That is not on the agenda of the coalition and the NATO allies," he told the Tages-Anzeiger paper when asked about dispatching ground forces to accompany air strikes. Stoltenberg pointed out that NATO would help Turkey improve its air defenses after Turkey shot down a Russian military jet last month.
'Hopefully, no nuclear weapons will be needed' against ISIS - Putin | 09 Dec 2015 | Vladimir Putin has praised the Russian cruise missiles fired against terrorists in Syria from the sea. He expressed hope that these weapons would not have to be armed with nuclear warheads. Meeting in the Kremlin with Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, who reported the latest results of the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) [but still I-CIA-SIS] ops in Syria, the Russian president made a notable remark. "We must analyze everything happening on the battlefield, how the weapons operate. The Kalibrs (sea based cruise missiles) and KH-101 (airborne cruise missile) have proved to be modern and highly effective, and now we know it for sure - precision weapons that can be equipped with both conventional and special warheads, which are nuclear," Putin said.
'Sick of being targeted': French authorities conducting warrantless raids on Muslims | 09 Dec 2015 | Emergency legislation enacted after last month's Paris attacks has led to a fierce crackdown on France's Islamic population. Warrantless searches and raids have become commonplace, a move which many say violates the civil liberties of Muslims. Speaking to RT, the manager of the Pepper Grill restaurant on the outskirts of Paris recalled a police raid at his restaurant on Saturday night. "They blocked the roads with trucks, and up to 40 armed men stormed our restaurant...Several officers rushed downstairs, then suddenly...they began breaking the doors with battering rams. The door wasn't even locked," the restaurant manager said. After police failed to find any weapons during the search, they raided so-called "undeclared prayer rooms" [?!?] above the restaurant.
Security guards at European UN headquarters carry submachine guns; officials are working with French police --Geneva on maximum alert in hunt for four Paris attack suspects | 10 Dec 2015 | Geneva security officials have said they have raised the alert level in the city and are looking for suspects in connection with investigations into the Paris attacks on 13 November. Policemen armed with submachine guns were posted at the entrances to United Nations institutions as well as the airport, train station and other key landmarks. UN buildings were evacuated shortly before midnight on Wednesday night. According to the Geneva press, a photograph of four bearded men suspected of being members of Isis in the area was being circulated among police patrols, following a tip-off from US intelligence [aka their handlers].
Armed police hunt four Paris massacre suspects near the UN building in Geneva as Switzerland raises its terror threat level --UN security guards stationed with MP5 sub-machine guns at entry points--Geneva officials raised alert level and put extra police officers on ground | 10 Dec 2015 | Armed police are hunting four suspects wanted over the Paris massacre near the United Nations headquarters in Switzerland. UN security guards are stationed with MP5 sub-machine guns at entry points for cars, a highly unusual measure at the sprawling complex. One guard said Swiss authorities were searching for 'four guys' believed to be in the area. 'It is maximum alert,' said a second guard at the European headquarters of the world body.
Paris attacker was rejected by French army, possibly police --'Mohamed-Aggad had left his military and police ambitions far behind him.' [Well, well, well. Maybe he didn't leave anything behind, after all...] | 11 Dec 2015 | Foued Mohamed-Aggad, one of three young men who shot dead 90 people at a Paris concert hall a month ago, was turned down by the French army and possibly also by the police before Islamic State took him on to fight for them...According to another neighbor, who gave his name as Youssef, the young man failed the police entrance exam by just a few marks, and was also turned down by the army. An official from Strasbourg's army recruitment office confirmed that Mohamed-Aggad had tried and failed to join in 2010...Police recruitment authorities would neither confirm nor deny any application. An official cited the confidentiality requirements of the inquiry into the Nov. 13 killings as the reason for the secrecy.
San Bernardino shooters planned bigger attack, investigators believe | 10 Dec 2015 | An examination of digital equipment recovered from the home of the couple who killed [allegedly] 14 people in San Bernardino last week has led FBI investigators to believe the shooters were planning an even larger assault, according to federal government sources. Investigators on Thursday continued to search for digital footprints left by Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, scouring a downtown San Bernardino lake for electronic items, including a hard drive that the couple was hoping to destroy, sources told The Times. FBI agents will probably spend days searching Seccombe Lake and canvassing the neighborhood for clues after receiving a tip that the couple may have visited the area on the day of the attack, according to David Bowdich, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles field office.
Bank records show $28,500 deposit to Syed Farook's account two weeks before the shooting, source says | 07 Dec 2015 | A 28,500 deposit was made to Syed Farook's bank account from WebBank dot com on or about November 18, some two weeks before he and his wife Tashfeen Malik carried out the San Bernardino massacre, a source close to the investigation told Fox News Monday. Investigators are exploring whether the transaction was a lo-n taken out by Farook, who with his wife killed 14 and wounded 21 when they opened fire at a holiday lunch...
Flashback: San Bernardino Suspects: 'Three White Males, Dressed in Military Gear' (Craft International, again?) | 06 Dec 2015 |
House tightens controls on visa-free travel to U.S. --Bill passed 407-19 | 09 Dec 2015 | Driven by the Paris terror attacks, the House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to tighten controls on travel to the U.S. and require visas for anyone who's been in Iraq or Syria in the previous five years. The legislation takes aim at the "visa waiver" program that allows citizens of 38 countries to travel to the U.S. for stays of 90 days and less without first obtaining a visa from an embassy or consulate. Belgium and France, home to most of the perpetrators of last month's Paris attacks, are among the participating countries.

Details about the new system - the country's third since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks - will be announced soon, Mr Johnson said at a Defense One magazine forum on Monday...His comments come on the heels of President Barack Obama telling Americans that the US is witnessing a "new phase" of terror threats.
Connecticut asks for 'no-fly,' other government watch lists to screen gun buyers | 10 Dec 2015 | Gov. Dannel P. Malloy (D) stepped into a national debate over gun control, civil liberties and terrorism Thursday by revealing he has asked the White House for access to the U.S. government's "no-fly" list and other terrorism watch lists to screen firearms purchases in Connecticut. "I intend to a sign a first-in-the-nation executive order, one that will result in banning the sale of guns to those on government watch lists," Malloy said in an early afternoon press conference. The governor asserted he has the executive authority to add the watch lists to the criteria for denying gun permits, saying a governor has relatively broad powers over permits, so long as those denied have a right to administrative appeals.

Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott said Brad Kenneth Bartelt, 47, of Jonesboro, had a 12-gauge shotgun and containers of gasoline and propane with him when he drove his truck onto a plaza east of the student union. University spokesman Bill Smith said the man, once a student at a remote campus, was taken into custody about an hour after the incident began.

Dick Cheney attacks Trump for 'ban Muslims' comments; former VP fine with illegally bombing Muslims, but not banning them --Donald Trump urges ban on Muslims entering United States | 07 Dec 2015 | Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Monday called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States in the most dramatic response by a candidate yet to last week's shooting spree by two Muslims who the FBI said had been radicalized. "We have no choice," Trump said at a rally in South Carolina, warning of more Sept. 11-style attacks if stern measures are not taken. Trump's statement on "preventing Muslim immigration" drew swift and fierce blow-back from many directions, including the White House, rivals for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton and Republican former Vice President [sic] Dick Cheney, who said the idea "goes against everything we stand for and believe in." [Right, sociopath (and war criminal) Cheney was fine with illegally *bombing* Muslims - but not banning them. I strongly oppose such utterly discriminatory banning. I'm merely underscoring Cheney's hypocrisy. --LRP]
Trump calls for 'complete shutdown' on Muslims entering U.S. | 07 Dec 2015 | Donald Trump called Monday for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States," an idea swiftly condemned by his rival GOP candidates for president and other Republicans [who (hypocritically) simultaneously called for carpet-bombing Muslims]. The proposed ban would apply to immigrants and visitors alike, a sweeping prohibition affecting all adherents of Islam who want to come to the U.S. The idea also raised immediate questions about its legality and feasibility, as experts could point to no formal exclusion of immigrants based on religion in America's history. Trump's campaign said in a statement such a ban should stand "until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."
Highest levels of Fukushima radiation detected off the US West Coast | 09 Dec 2015 | Nearly five years on, the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan continues to leak small amounts ofradiation into the Pacific Ocean, and more of that material is now showing up on the west coast of the US, according to new data. Researchers have detected 110 new contaminated sites off the American Pacific coast, including the highest levels of radioactive contamination around 2,500 km west of San Francisco...[The samples] contained 11 Becquerel's per cubic metre of seawater -- which is equivalent to 50 percent higher cesium levels than other samples collected in this part of the ocean so far.
Control rod failures force shutdown of New York nuclear power plant --Entergy 'not yet clear' on what caused problem | 08 Dec 2015 | One of the Indian Point nuclear power plant's reactors was shut down over the weekend after several control rods lost power, the plant owner said, marking the latest in a series of mishaps at the suburban New York nuclear plant this year. Control room operators shut down the Indian Point 2 reactor around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, owner Entergy Corp. said in a statement, adding the reactor did what it's intended to do if control rods lose electricity. Entergy reported no radiation was released into the environment, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has complained that there have been too many problems at Indian Point and has called for closing down the plant. [I wouldn't believe anything Entergy said if its tongue came notarized.]
Without discussion, Wisc. panel OKs bill lifting nuclear moratorium, allows ratepayers to absorb costs--Assembly's energy committee approved GOP member's bill unanimously and without discussion | 09 Dec 2015 | A legislative committee has approved a bill that would lift Wisconsin's moratorium on new [deadly, radiation-spewing] nuclear power plants. Under current law, state regulators can't approve a new nuclear power plant unless a federal storage facility for waste from nuclear plants nationwide exists and the plant wouldn't burden ratepayers. No centralized federal repository exists...Republican Rep. Kevin Petersen has introduced a bill that would erase the storage facility and ratepayer language from state law, in effect clearing the way for new plants. [BTW, 'Representative' Petersen actually has a *locked* Twitter account, @petersenstweets, so he can do his corporate bidding without interruption from any of his pesky constituents.]
Poll: Donald Trump nearly doubles lead in New Hampshire | 08 Dec 2015 | Donald Trump has a growing lead among likely primary voters in New Hampshire, and both he and Marco Rubio have gained ground in the state since September, according to a new CNN/WMUR poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Overall, 32% say they support Trump (up 6 points since September), with Rubio a distant second place with 14% (up 5 points). That 18-point lead is almost double the 10-point lead Trump held in September over businesswoman [corporatist fraud] Carly Fiorina.
Fox News suspends two contributors for crude Obama remarks | 07 Dec 2015 | Fox News has suspended two on-air contributors in the wake of crude language they used on different programs on Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network Monday to discuss President Obama. "Earlier today, Fox contributors Lt. Col. Ralph Peters and [pea-brain] Stacey Dash made comments on different programs that were completely inappropriate and unacceptable for our air," said Bill Shine, senior executive vice president of programming for both networks, in a prepared statement. "Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel do not condone the use of such language, and have suspended both Peters and Dash for two weeks."
Illinois lawmaker introduces 'recall Rahm' bill as protests continue in Chicago | 10 Dec 2015 | Amid ongoing protests in the city of Chicago, an Illinois state legislator who introduced a bill that would allow Rahm Emanuel to be removed from office by a recall vote says city residents feel abandoned by the embattled mayor. "We have not seen the tip of the iceberg yet," Rep. La Shawn Ford said on Thursday, saying voters had lost "trust and confidence" in the mayor. Legislation drafted by Ford would revise a 1941 law and create a ballot procedure for voters in the city to petition for Emanuel’s ouster. He said he hadn’t wanted to introduce his recall measure but constituents were demanding it.
