Massachusetts State Police released the homicide statistics for 2015. According to an MSP release, State Police investigated 64 homicides in the Commonwealth last year.
Of those 64 homicides, 3 occurred on the Cape & Islands. Eleven homicides occurred in neighboring Plymouth County.
The homicide statistics for the state do not include homicides in Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Pittsfield. With the exception of those four communities, State Police have jurisdiction over homicides in the state.
Of the 64 homicides, State Police working with local authorities, have solved 73% or 47 of those deaths.
Deaths classified as homicides include everything from outdoor shootings to domestic homicides, the release said.
In addition to homicide statistics, State Police released the number of fatal suspected heroin overdoses. Last year, State Police troopers and detectives investigated 755 such deaths. Of the 755, 41 or 5.4% of occurred on the Cape and Islands. In neighboring Plymouth, there were 94 fatal suspected heroin overdoses.
Although the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determines official cause of death, MSP labels such deaths suspected based on evidence and witness accounts from the scenes. The average age of the victim was 36 and 591 were male and 164 were female, the release said. As with homicides, State Police are not the lead investigators for unattended deaths in Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Pittsfield.
