Previous edition: Terror fears after series of security breaches at nuclear power stations

Coup 2016 underway: Homeland eyes special declaration to take charge of elections | 30 Aug 2016 | Even before the FBI identified new cyber attacks [likely an inside job, perpetrated by and for the same corporations who own and operate the electronic 'voting' machines] on two separate state election boards, the Department of Homeland Security began considering declaring the election a "critical infrastructure," giving it the same control over security it has over Wall Street and and the electric power grid. The latest admissions of attacks could speed up that effort possibly including the upcoming presidential election, according to officials. "We should carefully consider whether our election system, our election process, is critical infrastructure like the financial sector, like the power grid," Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said.

British Journo: Syrian Kidnapper Who Shot Me Twice Is Now a CIA-Vetted 'Moderate' | 03 Sept 2016 | British reporter Anthony Loyd recounts in The Times (UK) today his reaction when he saw his former Syrian "rebel" kidnapper Hakim Abu Jamal, aka Abdel Hakim al-Yaseen and Hakim Anza, celebrating a victory in northern Syria two weeks ago as part of a supposedly CIA-vetted "moderate" rebel terrorist group...Four US hostages were murdered in Syria in 2014. Two British hostages were also beheaded there. The memories of Britain and America must be short, for on Friday sources in the Free Syrian Army and US confirmed Hakim Anza’s membership of the CIA-backed group, in which he is sub-commander. Centcom, the US Central Command, did not respond to Times requests over three days this week to explainhow such a well-known hostage taker with family connections to extremists could have passed US vetting procedures.

US Navy covered up Afghan child rape problem to punish Marine - documents | 02 Sept 2016 | US Navy lawyers have advised against hearing a Marine's appeal on the premise that it would grant attention to an Afghan sex slave scandal. The officer sent a classified memo via his own email to warn fellow Marines of danger, shortly before three were killed. In the summer of 2012, Captain Brian Donlon reached out to a fellow Marine Corps officer - Major Jason Brezler, then in the USMC Reserves - to ask about Sarwar Jan, a police chief in Afghanistan's Helmand province with a reputation for corruption and keeping boys as sex slaves.

Marine, Navy officials in Afghanistan were aware of allegations of child rape by Afghan police chief, but he was allowed to keep his job anyway - lawsuit | 01 Sept 2016 | Last fall, the Navy Department had a controversial disciplinary case before it: Maj. Jason C. Brezler had been asked by Marine colleagues to submit all the information he had about an influential Afghan police chief suspected of abusing raping children. Brezler sent a classified document in response over an unclassified Yahoo email server, and he self-reported the mistake soon after. But the Marine Corps recommended that he be discharged for mishandling classified material. The Navy Department, which oversees the Marine Corps, had the ability to uphold or overturn the decision. However, rather than just looking at the merits of the case, Navy officials also assessed that holding new hearings on the case would renew attention on the scandal surrounding child sex abuse in Afghanistan, according to military documents newly disclosed in federal court.

U.S. resumes scheduled passenger flights to Cuba after more than 50 yrs | 01 Sept 2016 | The first scheduled commercial passenger flight from the United States to Cuba in more than half a century landed on Wednesday, opening another chapter in the Obama administration's efforts to improve ties and increase trade and travel with the former Cold War foe. A JetBlue Airways Corp passenger jet arrived from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the central Cuban city of Santa Clara. The route may be a commercial challenge, at least initially, but it is the first of a plethora of new flights by various U.S. airlines to destinations on the Communist-ruled island. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, JetBlue Chief Executive Officer Robin Hayes, other officials and journalists were aboard the 150-seat plane.
University of Nebraska Lincoln introduces new 'non-negotiable respect' policy which bans insulting groups, individuals or ideologies --Chancellor of University of Nebraska Lincoln has started 'respect' policy | 02 Sept 2016 | The University of Nebraska Lincoln's new chancellor Ronnie Green has instituted a new, non-negotiable respect policy at the school. During a speech given at the new student convocation last month, Green made it clear that 'actions of hate and disrespect' would not be tolerated. However, the policy on what constitutes 'hate' and 'disrespect' has not been made clear. [OMG. Is Marxism an 'insulting' ideology? Are those who question the events of 9/11 'disrespectful?' If I believe that Sandy Hoax was a DHS drill-gone-live, am I exuding 'hate?' If it takes a second American Revolution to rid us of this insanity, count me in! --LRPMarxism by definition does not respect bourgeois ideologies or politics, let alone for the most part, identity politics. Likewise, a principled Marxist stance would be outlawed on this campus of surveillance, coercion and control. Major essay on all of this and more, forthcoming. -- MDR].
Gag me with a chainsaw: Duke University creates a 'safe space' room for 'marginalized' students 'to heal' | 01 Sept 2016 | Students returning to Duke University this year will see a new addition to campus: a 'safe space' room. Student newspaper The Duke Chronicle reports that an old faculty office was turned into the safe space inside the Sanford School of Public Policy. School spokesman Karen Kemp confirmed the new room but would not go into any more detail about it. 'It's the first day of classes, and the professors who lead the school's diversity and inclusion committee aren't available to chat further about this,' Kemp told The Fix. [Help! I need a safe space to take refuge from the safe spaces!]
U.S. Supreme Court refuses to restore NC voter ID, reduce early voting days | 31 Aug 2016 | The U.S. Supreme Court refused Wednesday to reinstate North Carolina's voter identification requirement and keep just 10 days of early in-person voting. The court rejected a request by Gov. Pat McCrory and other state officials to delay a lower court ruling that found the state law was tainted by racial discrimination. The decision - a victory for voting rights groups and President Barack Obama's Justice Department - means voters won't have to show one of several qualifying photo IDs when casting ballots in the presidential battleground state. Early voting also reverts to 17 days, to begin Oct. 20.

Hillary Clinton Blamed Concussion for Memory Failure; Couldn't Recall Security Briefings - FBI Report | 02 Sept 2016 | Hillary Clinton told the FBI she did not recall all the briefings she received on handling sensitive information as she made the transition from her post as U.S. secretary of state, due to a concussion suffered in 2012, according to a report released Friday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a summary of the July 2 interview it conducted with the Democratic presidential candidate, as well as other details of its investigation into her use of a private email server while heading the State Department. Clinton, who is challenging Republican Donald Trump for the White House in the November 8 election, has been dogged by the fallout from her private email account for more than a year.

F.B.I. Releases Hillary Clinton Email Investigation Files | 02 Sept 2016 | The F.B.I. on Friday released its interview with Hillary Clinton that was conducted in early July, along with a memorandum summarizing the investigation into her use of a private email server that contained classified information. The document summarizing the Democratic presidential candidate's more than three-hour interview, known in the F.B.I. as a 302 report, runs only a dozen pages. The memorandum is lengthier, and goes into greater detail about aspects of the case.

Trump is ahead in national poll as Clinton slumps to 39 per cent before crucial Labor Day watershed | 01 Sept 2016 | Donald Trump has overtaken Hillary Clinton for the first time since mid-July, according to a weekly Rasmussen poll published on Thursday. Trump is polling at 40 per cent, a point ahead of Clinton at 39. It's a striking reversal of fortunes for the two candidates compared to last week, when Clinton led Trump 42 to 38. The result comes as Labor Day approaches. Following the holiday presidential campaigns ratchet up several notches, so polls then are seen as giving whoever is ahead at that point a crucial psychological advantage.

Donald Trump in SW Ohio: 'America first,' focus on populism | 01 Sept 2016 | Donald Trump promised to put "America first," refocusing on populist feelings that have fueled his campaign, and largely avoided his more controversial positions in a double-shot campaign stop in Southwest Ohio Thursday. In a midday rally in Wilmington, Trump advocated for "bold" changes to the country's immigration system, but avoided details of his stances on deporting people who are in the U.S. illegally. Instead, he spoke of building a wall on the Mexican border and of treating immigrants with "compassion." It's not that Trump has changed course on immigration: He generally doubled down on his hard-line immigration stances in a Wednesday night speech in Arizona.

Trump Recommits to Mass Deportation in Fiery Immigration Speech | 31 Aug 2016 | Donald Trump's self-declared "softening" on immigration is gone, replaced by a recommitment to a hardline policy that could best be described as mass deportation. Shouting his remarks to a fired-up crowd in Arizona, which has been home to some of the most contentious immigration policy fights of the last decade, Trump pledged a maximal approach that would target ever undocumented immigrant in the country without mercy. "There will be no amnesty," Trump said. "Our message to the world will be this: You cannot obtain legal status or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country."

Transcript of Donald Trump's Immigration Speech | 01 Sept 2016 | Following is a transcript of the remarks by Donald J. Trump on immigration in Phoenix on Wednesday, as transcribed by the Federal News Service.

Donald Trump Calls Mexican President 'a Friend' | 31 Aug 2016 | Donald J. Trump met in Mexico on Wednesday with President Enrique Pena Nieto. In a subdued joint appearance before the press in Mexico City, the two men described the meeting as warm, despite significant disagreements on issues of trade and immigration. Mr. Trump was expected to then travel to Arizona, where he was to detail his immigration policies in a speech. Here are some highlights from the day: Mr. Trump reached out to the Mexican president and people. Mr. Trump, first reading slowly from a statement and then speaking more freely in response to a question, said he now considered Mr. Pena Nieto a friend and heaped praise on Americans of Mexican descent. Mexican-Americans, Mr. Trump said, were "beyond reproach" and "spectacular, hard-working people."

Melania Trump sues Daily Mail and US blogger in 113 million pound libel case over past sex work claims | 02 Sept 2016 | Melania Trump has filed a $150 million (£113 million) lawsuit against the Daily Mail and a US blogger, saying they published false claims about her past. A Daily Mail story last month cited a Slovenian magazine's report that a modelling agency Ms Trump worked with in New York in the 1990s also served as an escort business, linking wealthy clients with women for sexual services. Late on Thursday, the Daily Mail retracted the story in a posting on its website and in the newspaper. In a statement, Mr Harder said she was suing the British newspaper and a US blogger, Webster Tarpley, over stories about her past she believes were "tremendously damaging".

More George W. Bush officials are backing Hillary Clinton | 31 Aug 2016 | Hillary Clinton cast Donald Trump as unqualified for the role of commander in chief in a speech to a veterans group on Wednesday meant to draw a contrast in leadership with the Republican presidential nominee, who is traveling abroad. Speaking at the American Legion's national convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, described Trump as erratic, dangerous and a threat to U.S. security...Earlier in the day, the Clinton campaign rolled out itslatest Republican endorsement, this one from James Clad, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for President [sic] George W. Bush. Clinton said she was "deeply honored" to have so many Republicans backing her campaign. [Yup, Hillary's overjoyed that Bush's unindicted war criminals, sociopaths, 9/11 architects, and TPP pushers are 'with her.']

Collateral Damage: Millions of bees die in South Carolina Zika spraying --Company co-owner Juanita Stanley says bee farm 'looks like it's been nuked' | 31 Aug 2016 | There's been some collateral damage in the fight against Zika - millions of honeybees in South Carolina. News outlets report that Dorchester County officials have apologized for killing the bees when the county failed to notify local beekeepers about mosquito spraying last weekend. Four travel-related cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in the county northwest of Charleston. Aerial mosquito spraying operations were conducted Sunday morning. Flowertown Bee Farm and Supply in Summerville lost more than two million bees.

Chemotherapy warning: Cancer drugs are killing up to 50 per cent of patients in some UK hospitals --Research published in The Lancet Oncology | 31 Aug 2016 | Patients should be warned about the dangers of chemotherapy after research showed that cancer drugs are killing up to 50 per cent of patients in some UK hospitals. For the first time researchers looked at the numbers of cancer patients who died within 30 days of starting chemotherapy, which indicates that the medication is the cause of death, rather than the cancer. The study by Public Health England and Cancer Research UK found that across England around 8.4 per cent of patients with lung cancer, and 2.4 per cent of breast cancer patients died within a month. But in some hospitals the figure was far higher.

District Attorney Nico LaHood says vaccines cause autism | 29 Aug 2016 | (TX) Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood is making a bold statement about vaccines. In a video posted on Facebook by the Autism Media Channel, LaHood says: "I'm Nico LaHood. I'm the criminal district attorney in San Antonio, Texas. I'm here to tell you that vaccines can and do cause autism," says LaHood in a promotional video for the movie 'VAXXED.' LaHood and his wife are parents to one autistic child and the couple has participated in many Autism awareness-related events.

Oklahoma's 5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Sparks Fracking Fears | 03 Sept 2016 | One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in Oklahoma rattled a state where seismic activity has become a growing concern, sending tremors through six neighboring states, the United States Geological Survey said on Saturday. The quake, which struck 14 km (9 miles) northwest of Pawnee in north-central Oklahoma at 7:02 a.m. CDT (1302 GMT), had a magnitude of 5.6, matching in strength a temblor that hit the state in 2011, the USGS reported on its website...Oklahoma geologists have documented links between increased seismic activity in the state and the injection into the ground of wastewater from oil and gas production [aka fracking], according to a report from a state agency last year.

New York area gears up for possible Hermine hit | 04 Sept 2016 | Post-tropical Cyclone Hermine is regaining strength as it moves slowly up the Eastern Seaboard. Tropical storm warnings are in effect as far north as Connecticut, with a dangerous storm surge expected along the coast from Virginia to New Jersey. Residents in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- particularly those who live along the coastline -- are taking precautions. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has already activated the state's emergency operations center.

Hermine is a potential 'monster' Labor Day weekend storm threat for East Coast | 03 Sept 2016 | After slamming Florida, deadly Hurricane Hermine weakened to a tropical storm Friday but will still focus its fury on the East Coast through the Labor Day weekend. Some forecasts are showing Hermine (or its remnants) exploding into a monster, hurricane-like storm just off the Delaware and New Jersey coast late Sunday and into Monday, potentially just sitting there and hammering the coast for days. In the worst-case scenario, it could bring levels of destruction to portions of the coast approaching that of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Hermine pounds Florida, then churns north into Carolinas | 03 Sept 2016 | Hurricane Hermine wreaked havoc across Florida on Friday, causing widespread power outages and flooding before diminishing into a tropical storm and plowing up the Atlantic Coast into the Carolinas with a still-potent mix of high winds and heavy rains. The first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 11 years, Hermine swept ashore early on Friday near the Gulf shore town of St. Marks, 20 miles (30 km) south of the capital of Tallahassee, packing winds of 80 mph (130 kph) and churning up a devastating storm surge in coastal areas. Torrential downpours and high surf left parts of some communities under water early Friday, with mandatory evacuations ordered in parts of five northwestern Florida counties.

Santa Clara police might not work 49ers games amid Colin Kaepernick protest | 02 Sept 2016 | The union for the police force that patrols San Francisco 49ers' Levi's Stadium threatened to not work home games over Colin Kaepernick's continued protest of the national anthem, according to multiple reports on Friday night. The Santa Clara Police Officers' Association said minus Kaepernick halting his pregame protest, could result in officers "choosing not to work at your facilities," NBC Bay Area reported. The 49ers are scheduled to open the season there against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Sept. 12 as part of a national television doubleheader.
