CounterCurrents: Russia And Turkey Sign Strategic Turkish Stream Gas Pipeline Deal, Trump and Hillary: The Tragedy Of The Great American Soap Opera

Dear Friend,

Turkey and Russia on Monday signed the Turkish Stream gas pipeline agreement. A region already marred by pipeline geopolitics gets another one! The West is not going to be amused by this new bonhomie between Russia and Turkey. Their animosity will be played out in the battle fields of Syria, for the immediate future. The people of Syria will suffer. We don't know what's in the offing there after.

Chris Smaje of 'Small Farm Future' looks at the plethora of crises that challenge the survival of humanity and argues that perhaps Capitalism may be "Elephant in the Room." But he warns that "it now seems pretty clear that some magic solution to the world’s problems is not going to fall from the sky simply through the overthrow of capitalism. Complex problems require complex solutions."

'System Of Rice Intensification' which originated in the highlands of Madagascar and being practiced the world over is a great method to increase crop production without destroying the environment.

Also a tribute to Samar Sen, the legendary editor of "Frontier"

And also more stories from around the world.

Turkey and Russia Monday (Oct 10) signed the Turkish Stream gas pipeline agreement. The signing of the strategic deal came after a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin who was in Istanbul to attend the 23rd World Energy Congress which gathered 10,000 participants, including four presidents, 250 energy ministers, academia, policymakers and CEOs of top energy companies.

Trump and Hillary: The Tragedy Of The Great American Soap Opera

Hilary Clinton, a war monger who supported the attack on Libya and the murder of Muammar Gaddafi. Clinton who presses for more attacks on Syria and who sanctions the destabilisation of that sovereign state via the placement of US military personnel there along with the active backing of terror groups. Clinton, the candidate who is on record as stating she would go to war with Iran and whose dodgy emails and Clinton Foundation dealings help demonstrate the corruption at the heart of US politics.

Hillary Clinton, The Queen Of Flip-Floppery, On Genocide
by David Boyajian

Few people can honestly dispute that Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton (HRC) is the Queen of Flip-Floppery and that her flip-flop record is lengthy: The North American Free Trade Agreement, Trans-Pacific Partnership, Cuban embargo, Keystone oil pipeline, sanctuary cities, same-sex marriage, charter schools, and more. But HRC’s flip-flops on the most extreme form of mass murder — genocide — may be the most disturbing.

The Elephant In The Room Is Capitalism. Maybe.
by Chris Smaje

I think Marx was definitely onto something with his C → M → Cs and his M → C→ Ms, but it now seems pretty clear that some magic solution to the world’s problems is not going to fall from the sky simply through the overthrow of capitalism. Complex problems require complex solutions. There is no elephant in the room. Or else maybe there are many.

The System Of Rice Intensification And Its International Community Of Practice
by Erika Styger

There is a great potential to build on what has already been accomplished. There is a high demand for knowledge from smallholder farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and the international community of practice is available to work with them. More than ever, we know how to best adapt the SRI methodology to various climates and cropping systems. Farmer-driven agricultural innovation, stimulated by the SRI methodology, can become a model to further improve other crops and components of smallholder farming systems.
