Lauderdale shooter's gun a month before airport attack after he reported himself because he thought the CIA was making him fight for ISIS | 08 Jan 2017 | The Iraq war veteran accused of killing five travelers and wounding six others at a busy international airport in Florida was charged Saturday and could face the death penalty if convicted. Esteban Santiago, 26, told investigators that he planned the attack, buying a one-way ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport, a federal complaint said. Authorities don't know why he chose his target and have not ruled out terrorism...It has also been revealed that FBI agents took Santiago's gun off him when he went into an Alaska field office in November to say the U.S. government was controlling his mind. But it was returned to him just a month later, and law enforcement will not reveal why. Sources told CNN he used the same weapon in the airport attack.
 
Airport Suspect Received Global War on Terrorism Service Medal | 07 Jan 2017 | The man identified as the methodical shooter behind Friday's "heinous" attack in the baggage area of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, served in the U.S. military in Iraq and earned 11 awards, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jesse Stalder confirmed Esteban Santiago's service record and the awards he earned in a email to Patch on Friday night. According to Stalder, Santiago served from December 2007 to August 2016 and earned the awards during his time in the Puerto Rico National Guard and the Alaska National Guard.

Gunman Esteban Santiago - an Iraq war veteran - was taken into custody after he opened fire in the lower level baggage claim area in Terminal 2 on Friday about 1pm... FBI officials said late Friday they had not ruled out terrorism and were investigating all angles. Authorities said Santiago, 26, walked into an FBI office in Anchorage in November last year claiming the government was trying to control his mind and he was being forced to watch ISIS videos, CBS reports.

ET hours) reported that the alleged Florida airport shooter, Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, claimed that US government 'intelligence agencies infiltrated his mind' and forced him to watch ISIS videos. He was reportedly 'incoherent.' In November, Santiago-Ruiz reported that charge to an FBI in a field office in in Anchorage, Alaska. Alleged 'lone gunman' Santiago-Ruiz went on a rampage at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Five people were killed and eight injured when the gunman, carrying military ID, opened fire Friday afternoon at the airport in Fort Lauderdale.

A Greek police official confirmed the death of the 54-year-old and said homicide officers had now been drafted in to help with the investigation due to Mr Malanin's diplomatic status.

Democrats want 9/11-style special commission to probe Russia | 09 Jan 2017 | Democratic members of the U.S. Congress called on Monday for the creation of an independent commission to investigate Russia's attempts to intervene in the 2016 election, similar to the Sept. 11 panel that probed [sic] the 2001 attacks [inside job] on the United States. Their "Protecting our Democracy Act" would create a 12-member, bipartisan independent panel to interview witnesses, obtain documents, issue subpoenas and receive public testimony to examine attempts by Moscow and any other entities to influence the election. The panel members would not be members of Congress.
 
Grizzly Misstep: Security Experts Call Russia Hacking Report 'Poorly Done,' 'Fatally Flawed' | 31 Dec 2016 | On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI released a joint reportabout Russian cyberattacks, titled "Grizzly Steppe." The report had been expected to lay out more details about intelligence agency's claims that the Russian government was directly linked to hacks on the DNC and other organizations, but security experts have expressed broad disappointment with the report.
 
Mass. officials worried about safety at 'overwhelmed' Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant | 05 Jan 2017 | The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, located on Cape Cod bay in Plymouth, became a point of controversy recently after an internal memo from the plant leaked that expressed concerns about maintenance issues and an "overwhelmed" staff. Now, a group of Massachusetts politicians, including Governor Charlie Baker, Attorney General Maura Healey, Senator Edward J. Markey, have stepped forward to put pressure on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in the hopes that it will schedule a public meeting to discuss public safety concerns surrounding the plant. The group of officials sent a letter to the NRC on Wednesday, expressing concern for the leaked December 6, 2016, e-mail.
 
Radioactive contamination spreading within Hanford plant | 01 Jan 2017 | Radioactive contamination is spreading within one of Hanford's huge processing plants, and the problem could escalate as the plant, unused since the 1960s, continues to deteriorate. A new report on the Reduction-Oxidation Complex, more commonly called REDOX, recommends that $181 million be spent on interim cleanup and maintenance of the plant. REDOX is not scheduled to be demolished until about 2032, or possibly later because the nearby 222-S Laboratory in central Hanford will be needed to support the Hanford vitrification plant for another 30 to 40 years.
 
5,000 National Guard troops will be deployed for Trump swearing-in ceremony | 07 Jan 2017 | Washington is beefing up security in the run up to President-elect Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration, including the deployment of 5,000 National Guard troops downtown amid security concerns. Mayor Muriel Bowser said despite increased security concerns, the city is prepared and ready for the event, she said Friday at a press conference with U.S. Secret Service and other security forces. In addition to the 5,000 National Guard troops being deployed in the city, 3,000 security officers from multiple jurisdiction will also be on the ground, according to security officials.

Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to join White House as senior adviser; no formal role for Ivanka Trump | 09 Jan 2017 | Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump and one of his closest confidants, will join the White House as a senior adviser to the president, Trump announced Monday, while a lawyer assisting the family said that Kushner's wife, Ivanka Trump, will not immediately take on a formal role. Kushner, who will not take a salary, is expected to have a broad portfolio that includes government operations, trade deals and Middle East policy, according to a member of Trump's transition team. In a statement, the transition office said Kushner would work closely with White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon to execute Trump's agenda.
 
Donald Trump Certified as President of the United States | 06 Jan 2017 | A joint session of Congress certified the electoral vote Friday afternoon, officially ending the 2016 presidential race and electing Donald Trump the next president of the United States. Trump was projected to get 306 electoral votes after the popular vote, but two electors defected, giving him 304 - still more than the 270 needed to win the presidency. Two Trump electors from Texas cast their ballots instead for Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Rep. Ron Paul.

She was joined by numerous superstars in the room, many of whom were also seen on camera last night applauding and cheering as Streep attacked Trump's supposed immorality. Clearly, their collective high moral values are a movable feast.

Snowstorm blamed for 30-vehicle pileup on Connecticut highway, wreaks havoc across US --Pileup involved at least 20 cars, three tractor-trailers and a tanker | 07 Jan 2017 | Connecticut state police responded Saturday to reports of a nearly 30-vehicle pileup on a highway near Hartford. A snowstorm that was predicted to bring up to 8 inches of snow to the area was being blamed for the crash at exit 21 in the southbound lanes of I-91 in Middletown...In Virginia, authorities say slick roads have caused more than 500 crashes, including one that was fatal.
