CounterCurrents: Condemn and demand an enquiry into Idlib chemical attack

Dear Friend,

The horrific chemical attack on the village of Khan Sheikhun in Idlib province in Syria is to be condemned in no uncertain terms. However, any knee-jerk reaction from the Trump administration, as signals coming from Washington suggest, will lead world into chaos. It's time that sane headed people came together. We must unanimously condemn the use of chemical weapons and demand an enquiry led by UN into the Idlib attack.

As most of India is going through a heatwave, Kashmir is receiving unseasonal rains leading to flooding and snow. Two people went missing when a vehicle fell into a flooded river. It's high time that India woke up to the dangers of climate change.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. It's time for humanity to come together as one family! You can subscribe to our news letter here http://www.countercurrents.org/news-letter/.

Trump, Syria, And Chemical Weapons: What We Know, What We Don’t, And The Dangers Ahead
by Phyllis Bennis

In the meantime we know another truth: that a US military escalation against Syria (because we must not forget that US Special Forces and US bombers are already fighting there) will not help the victims of this heinous chemical attack, it will not bring the devastating war in Syria to a quicker end, it will not bring back the dead children. It will not defeat ISIS or end terrorism, it will create more terrorists. It will almost certainly cause more casualties, more injuries, and more dead. Maybe dead children.  There is still no military solution. This is what we know

Ice And Busts: The Lost War On Drugs In Australia
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

It was hard to tell whether Australia’s Federal Police authorities, along with their Victorian colleagues, were gloating at their latest effort.  Thrilled at the unearthing of a stash of methamphetamine, a form of it colloquially known as ice, trumpeted as the “biggest seizure” in Australian history, there was a sense of achievement. They had gotten one up on the drugs gangs, inflicting a blow to the narcotics trade.  Celebrate! Such celebrations, however, are misplaced.

What Should Actually Make The Doctors Angry
by Prof Shah Alam Khan

The recent strike of doctors across Maharashtra (and other parts of the country) against violence unleashed on them by disgruntled relatives of patients have thrown up uncomfortable questions. It is essential that the medical community should do an introspection and try and find the flaws within; flaws which need to be rectified to avoid ugly situations at work. Unfortunately, the medical fraternity either fails or turns a blind eye to realize that we live in a society which institutionalizes violence

Open Letter To President Of India On UID/Aadhaar
by Gopal Krishna

We solemnly and earnestly appeal to you to save the present and future citizens from unlimited government as a consequence of an unlimited database of Indians and anonymous financing of political parties under the Aadhaar Act, 2016 and amended Companies Act, 2013 by seeking Hon’ble Supreme Court’s opinion under Article 143(2) of the Constitution of India on the constitutionality of biometric UID/Aadhaar in supreme national interest. This Article has not been used so far but extraordinary situations create compelling logic for extraordinary patriotic steps which can set a healthy precedent for all times to come.
