Crimea: From World War 0 To World War III
by Ugo Bardi
Today, we remember little about what we call the Crimean war (1853-1856), even though it was the largest war ever fought in history up to that moment. It prefigured many of the elements that would later reappear in the two world wars of the 20th century, so much that we might call it “World War 0.” It included fossil fuels as the ultimate cause of conflicts, an enhanced role of propaganda, the tendency of leaders of losing control of the wars they have started, and the origin of the “Russophobia” still common in the West in our times. These elements may tell us a lot about what could be a “World War III” in our future.
Al-Shayrat Airfield Attack Violates UN Charter
by Richard Falk
The Khan Sheikhoun attack raises more fundamental questions that are neither raised nor resolved by Trump’s speech. Despite making a gesture in the direction of international law by reference to the Chemical Weapons Convention and Security Council directives, the strike against al-Shayrat Airfield was a non-defensive use of force by the United States that violates the core UN Charter prohibition unless carried out on the basis of an explicit Security Council authorization.
Joining The War Train: Trump’s Liberal Cheer Leaders
by Dr Binoy Kampmark
As Joan Walsh explains in The Nation, individuals such as Fareed Zakaria on CNN’s News Day (“I think Donald Trump became president of the United Sates” with the strikes); or MSNBC’s Nicholas Kristof (Trump “did the right thing”) signal that dire, toxic embrace that confuses power with purpose.[2] From seeing Trump previously as an incompetent, unable buffoon unfit for the White House, he bloomed in the field of conflict.
The Gassing Game In Syria: Regime Change And Beyond
by Dr Chandra Muzaffar
US-Russia ties are not the only issue adversely impacted by the US’s 7th April bombardment. If the US escalates its military involvement, it will have far-reaching consequences for the on-going conflict in Syria, politics in WANA and global peace in general.
Trudeau Poodles For Empire
by Jim Miles
Canada’s PM Trudeau displayed all the sycophancy of a stalwart U.S. ally in his response concerning actions towards Russia – or, as with former PM Harper, it could be actually viewed as front-running for the empire in order to create momentum and be part of the team
Can Red Sea Corals Save The Worlds Reefs?
by Thomas C Mountain
Red Sea corals living in shallow waters here in the historic Zula Bay in Eritrea annually tolerate water temperatures of up to 37c/98f with only moderate bleaching, with the bleached portions able to recover once water temperatures go down. If all species present tolerate these high temperatures there will be species that can tolerate even higher levels of temperature stress. So the world needs to immediately start to identify and culture these species of corals so that in 4 to 5 years the beginnings of an effort to replant the worlds reefs with heat tolerant corals will begin to make a difference.
Mourning The Death Of ‘The City Of Ideas’
by Nivedita Dwivedi
The larger goal had been successfully accomplished. The status-quo would now be preserved for generations to come. No-one could now rise to question the carefully designed structure of society. No-one could now even dream of being a dissenter. The era of conformists would now last for ages together, till such time that the original culture of the ‘City of ideas’ is completely struck off, even from the world of memories.
The Case For A Truth And Reconciliation Commission In Kashmir
by Sheikh Athar
The recent deaths of eight young civilians on the polling day once again underscores the need move beyond the sovereignty versus azaadi debate or even the embittered dynamics of the neighbourhood territorial dispute and mend fences closer home, before the embers of dissatisfaction spill over the streets again. The narrative should shift stance on justice dispensation, a crucial facet, which is often ignored by the political class and state institutions alike. Pursuing the idea of justice in the strife torn landscape of Kashmir is a particularly tricky proposition for several reasons. Yet this is precisely why, delivering justice is imperative to the reconciliation process and rebuilding strained relations in this protracted conflict.
Racially Motivated Attacks On Africans In India Rooted In Casteism
by Dr Subramani Mani
Many African students have spoken out about the racism they face in their daily life in India but the Indian authorities including the extern affairs minister Sushama Swaraj are in denial mode.In Western societies racism gets manifested as white supremacy and hence white racism and the minorities are stereotyped and assigned an inferior role and status in society. For example, US as a country did not welcome immigration from Asian and African countries before the sixties of the last century. In India the racism being manifested against Africans and people of the North-East are an extension of the entrenched caste system of India.
