CounterCurrents: The New South African Revolution, Bill McKibben: The Question I Get Asked The Most

Dear Friend,

South Africa is in turmoil. The South African people are fed up with the corruption, nepotism and the neoliberalist agenda of the Jacob Zuma regime. People are agitating. Prithiraj Dullay a compatriot of Steve Biko sees the emergence of a new dawn in South Africa. He hopes this could be the beginning of a new South African revolution.

Bill McKibben needs no introduction. He's one of the champions of climate change campaign. He says only if there is a collective resistance can we achieve anything on the climate change front.

In India, the ruling far right Bharatiya Janata Party and its handlers the semi-fascist RSS is on a rampage. Guajarat state has passed a law giving life term for cow slaughter, "Those guilty of cow slaughter will be hanged" says another chief minister. It looks like India is fast turning into inot a Hindurashtra. The opposition is in quandry after the trouncing it faced in the all important Uttar Pradesh (UP) election. Moreover, the minorities in India is facing an existential crisis. Nobody seems to have a clear vision of how to handle the fascist onslaught. Mirza Yawar Baig gives some practical solutions for Indian Muslims to move forward. This article needs to be widely read and discussed.

The Question I Get Asked The Most
by Bill McKibben

No, the right question is “What can we do to make a difference?”

The New South African Revolution
by Prithiraj Dullay

The chances for chaos in Nelson Mandela’s homeland is great but so is the opportunity of getting a shot at the country re-inventing itself, in other words a second revolution, perhaps as great as the one that ended Apartheid and ushered in democracy. Few doubt today that the transition was seriously flawed. The compromises made in 1994 caused many to say that Mandela and the ANC sold out the struggle for real emancipation and settled for A World Bank/IMF brokered deal that was not in the interest of the people

Iranian Militia Shoots Disabled Activist Dead In His Home In Front Of His Children
by Rahim Hamid

Iranian regime militia shot an unarmed wheelchair-bound disabled Ahwazi activist dead in front of his wife and children in their home, apparently “revenge” for his civil rights activism.

Iraq Rejects Displaying Kurdish Flag In Kirkuk Fearing Establishment Of Greater Kurdistan
by Abdus Sattar Ghazali

The Iraqi parliament on Saturday, April 1, 2017, voted against raising the flag of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on public buildings and institutions in the city of Kirkuk.

South Sudan “Rebels” And The CIA; Show Me The Money!
by Thomas C Mountain

For going on 3 years now a “rebel army” of some 20,000 South Sudanese soldiers have been fighting to overthrow the Salva Kiir government without any visible means of support. The government has oil revenues and aid funds but the “rebels” (and their propaganda arm in the west) have not been asked by anyone in the international media to “show me the money”.

Israel Steps Up Dirty Tricks Against Boycott Leaders
by Jonathan Cook

The local boycott movement is feeling the brunt of the assault. Activists already risk punitive damages if they call for a boycott of the settlements. Transport minister Yisrael Katz stepped up the threats last year, warning BDS leaders that they faced “civil targeted assassination”. What did he mean?Omar Barghouti, the movement’s Palestinian figurehead, was arrested last month, accused of tax evasion. He is already under a travel ban, preventing him from receiving an international peace award this month. And Israeli officials want to strip him of his not-so “permanent” residency.

Trump Administration’s Reversal of Obama Era Policy in Syria
by Nauman Sadiq

Tulsi Gabbard asked Assad: “If President Trump contacted you, would you answer the call?” Assad replied: “Is this a hypothetical question, or a proposal?” Gabbard: “It’s not hypothetical. This is a question to you coming from President Trump which he asked me to convey to you. So let me repeat the question: If President Trump contacted you, would you answer the call?” Assad replied: “Of course. And I’ll give you a number where I can be reached quickly.”

The Hazara Dilemma: Ghani In Australia
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

But what, ultimately, was troubling the Hazara protesters who had turned up in the mood of peaceful protest?  In 2011, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Afghanistan and Australia on the subject of accepting Afghan asylum seekers who had failed to make the cut.  A good number of those who have fallen into this trap are those from the Hazara group, implicitly suggesting that various persecuted minorities would be placed under a withering and unsympathetic spotlight.

US Selectively Invokes Liberal Virtues To Serve War Propaganda: Bashar Assad Today; Bertrand Russell In 1922
by Robert J Barsocchini

In 1922, the extremely influential British philosopher, mathematician and historian, Bertrand Russell, pointed out the US invokes “humanitarian” and “liberal virtues” when they can be used to help pursue US “imperial” and “financial interests”, and mysteriously “fails to perceive [the] applicability” of these virtues when their invocation would hurt imperial/financial interests (1), [just as someone like Trump ‘mysteriously’ fails to perceive the applicability of science regarding climate change, but accepts its general applicability in everyday life, such as when he takes medications, uses a computer, etc].

Indian Muslims: Looking Ahead
by Mirza Yawar Baig

I believe the time has come for Indian Muslims to rethink their very existence in this country. We are Indians by choice. We love our country and want to contribute to its development. Therefore, it is time to stop living in isolation and start participating in every aspect of life in our country as CONTRIBUTORS. Not merely whine and complain about negative things that happen to us but do nothing positive to help others.Nobody can harm us – unless we allow it. All this will take time and effort. All this will be painful at least to some. All this needs serious investment of funds. But without it, we will cease to exist as relevant and significant members of this society. The writing is on the wall. The choice is ours.
