Union of Concerned Scientists: Censoring science. Nuclear threats.

Even before President Trump's election, the human race faced two giant, existential threats: climate change and the risk of nuclear war.
Now, after two months of his presidency, both are looming larger than ever. His disregard for science—the most fundamental tool humanity has to save itself from this destruction—is truly chilling:
Trump's EPA administrator doubts the science connecting carbon emissions and climate change.¹ He proposed deep cuts in funding for programs that protect the environment and our health—especially those focused on climate and earth science.² The Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Science and Technology Policy deleted the word "science" from the description of its mission.³ Unfortunately, I could go on...
The truth is, this is just the beginning. To keep fighting back, to resist every attack, we need defenders of science like you to make an important commitment right now: start a monthly gift.
Today I'd like ask you to take the next step. Strengthen the defense of science by giving monthly to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The fight for science, transparency, and the facts needs your steady support.
Because monthly giving is such an effective way to participate in this fight, a generous donor has agreed to match the first year of your monthly gifts to UCS. Don't miss this unprecedented opportunity to have your gift go twice as far by making it monthly now.
We call our monthly donors Partners for the Earth. The steady resources we get from these 10,000 supporters makes it possible for us to go BIG when the moment calls for itand plan bold campaigns far into the future. In such frightening and uncertain times, that predictable support is the backbone of our work.
The Union of Concerned Scientists has been the leading advocate for science-based solutions for nearly 50 years. Like any good scientist, we're already studying, growing, and adapting to increase our impact as we meet this extraordinary moment. Your monthly support—with its impact doubled over the next 12 months!—will make sure that UCS can continue to be effective with efforts such as:
  • Pushing back against threats to remove the US from international climate change agreements: We need to make sure the Trump administration doesn't follow through on its plan to withdraw the US from United Nations agreements to reduce carbon pollution. For these efforts to succeed, the US must maintain its leadership role.
  • Addressing the overwhelming threat of nuclear weapons: UCS is leading the fight to pass legislation that takes away the president's ability to unilaterally order the use of nuclear weapons, and taking all nuclear weapons off of hair-trigger alert.
  • Empowering whistleblowers: For federal scientists and employees who experience censorship or threats, we've created a confidential, secure way for them to let us know what's happening on the inside, so we can convey their stories to journalists and science allies in Congress.
  • Saving research: We're helping preserve critical data collected by government scientists that the administration could erase or hide from the public. We will preserve as much of this important work as possible, so independent scientists can continue using it to help policymakers and community leaders combat global warming and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
  • Hitting the streets: UCS is a key sponsor of the People's Climate March, taking place Saturday, April 29, and the March for Science on April 22, both in Washington, DC. We're also working with the 20,000 scientists, economists, and technical experts who make up our Science Network—to help them organize other experts and activists to take action in their own communities.
None of us wants to look back on this moment and feel like we could have done more. As the leader of the Union of Concerned Scientists, I promise that we'll put your monthly gift to work each and every day—in the biggest, boldest, and smartest ways possible—to win the coming war on science and environmental policy, and to protect against the renewed threat of nuclear war.
We care about science, but more importantly, we care about the use of science to protect our health, make us safer, and secure our planet's future for generations to come. That's what you'll stand for—and support—as a Partner for the Earth. I hope you'll join this committed group of monthly donors today.
Thank you again, Middleboro, for all that you've done to stand up for science, and (if you can) for joining us as a Partner for the Earth.
