MORNING MESSAGE
How to Get Revenge for Charlottesville
People’s organizations, armed with the peaceful power of the vote, can take back statehouses in Virginia and all across the country, reversing the agenda of helmeted cowards, domestic terrorists and their allies. Wouldn’t that be the sweetest revenge?
Rallies Denounce Racism, Trump Nationwide
Anti-Trump, anti-racism rallies across US draw thousands. CNN:“Shouting ‘Shame! Shame! Shame!’ anti-Trump protesters awaited the President’s arrival in New York City as he returned Monday night for the first time since taking office… About 1,000 people gathered at two rallies Monday night in Salt Lake City to condemn white supremacy and racism, CNN affiliate KSL reported. The Utah League of Native American Voters and the Multicultural Engagement for Utah organized ‘the solidarity rally’ at the Salt Lake City and County Building downtown, according to KSL.’It’s about empowering the voices of many vulnerable communities,’ said Moroni Benally, co-founder of the Utah League of Native American Voters.”
Turmoil in Virginia touches a nerve across the country. WaPo:“A Virginia college town was rocked over the weekend by violent clashes between white nationalists and hundreds of counter protesters. Three people were killed amid the turmoil in Charlottesville, which has exposed the nation’s roiling racial and political divisions. The chaos has reverberated to the White House and Silicon Valley.”
Deadly Rally Accelerates Removal of Confederate Monuments
Deadly rally accelerates ongoing removal of Confederate statues across U.S. Chicago Tribune:“I Gainesville, Florida, workers hired by the Daughters of the Confederacy chipped away at a Confederate soldier’s statue, loaded it quietly on a truck and drove away with little fanfare. In Baltimore, Mayor Catherine Pugh said she’s ready to tear down all of her city’s Confederate statues, and the city council voted to have them destroyed. San Antonio lawmakers are looking ahead to removing a statue that many people wrongly assumed represented a famed Texas leader who died at the Alamo.”
Charlottesville Killing Labeled Domestic Terrorism
Sessions opens Civil Rights investigation of Charlottesville killing. NYT:“When Attorney General Jeff Sessions denounced the violence in Charlottesville, Va., as an ‘evil’ act of domestic terrorism on Monday, he was in some ways an unlikely figure to emerge as one of the most prominent voices in the Trump administration on the issue. Though he is the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, Mr. Sessions, an outspoken Alabama conservative, is viewed with mistrust by many civil-rights advocates concerned about his ambivalence over expanding protections for minorities.”
Justice Demands IP Addresses from Trump Resistance Website
Justice demands 1.3M IP addresses related to Trump resistance site. The Hill:“The Department of Justice has requested information on visitors to a website used to organize protests against President Trump, the Los Angeles-based Dreamhost said in a blog post published on Monday. Dreamhost, a web hosting provider, said that it has been working with the Department of Justice for several months on the request, which believes goes too far under the Constitution. DreamHost claimed that the complying with the request from the Justice Department would amount to handing over roughly 1.3 million visitor IP addresses to the government, in addition to contact information, email content and photos of thousands of visitors to the website, which was involved in organizing protests against Trump on Inauguration Day.”
