Progressive Breakfast: Trump Won't Say It, But We Will: White Terror in Charlottesville

MORNING MESSAGE

Richard Eskow
Trump Won’t Say It, But We Will: White Terror in Charlottesville
There are only two sides here: Right and wrong. Murderer and victim. Hatred and love. When it really matters, the president of the United States refuses to call terror by its name, or pick a side. But we can.

Tragedy in Virginia

Cities hold vigils in wake of Charlottesville violence. ABC:“Dozens of vigils and demonstrations were held across the country Sunday a day after a woman was killed at an anti-fascist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The vigils honored the life of Heather Heyer, who died when a man drove his car into a group of counter protesters on Saturday afternoon, and some for action against hate groups.”
Charlottesville and the rise of white identity politics. Five Thirty Eight:“There is nothing new about white supremacist groups in the U.S., or anti-Semitism, or people who defend the symbols of the Confederacy. (The “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.)… What is different about this iteration of white nationalism is how the movement is framing its ideas, and the place those ideas occupy in U.S. politics.”
Alleged driver of car that plowed into Charlottesville crowd was a Nazi sympathizer. WaPo:“A man accused of plowing a car into a crowd of activists here — killing one person and injuring 19 — long sympathized with Nazi views and had stood with a group of white supremacists hours before Saturday’s bloody crash. The alleged driver, James Alex Fields Jr., a 20-year-old who traveled to Virginia from Ohio, had espoused extremist ideals at least since high school.”
Trump declines to denounce white nationalists. NYT:“The president’s reluctance to speak out with force and moral indignation against the white nationalists who incited the most serious racial episode of his presidency elicited deep feelings of disappointment spanning the ideological spectrum, and a spreading sense that he had squandered a critical opportunity to empathize, unite and move beyond the acrimony that has engulfed the White House and country.”

China Trade Push

Trump to ramp up trade pressure on China with call for probe. CNBC:“President Donald Trump on Monday will order his top trade adviser to determine whether to investigate Chinese trade practices that force U.S. firms operating in China to turn over intellectual property, senior administration officials said on Saturday. The move, which could eventually lead to steep tariffs on Chinese goods, comes at a time when Trump has asked China to do more to crack down on North Korea’s nuclear missile program as he threatens possible military action against Pyongyang.”
