Pennsylvania Congressman Tim Murphy admits to extramarital affair

  | WednesdaySept. 6, 2017,

U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, admitted Wednesday afternoon to having an extramarital affair with a friend.
“This is nobody's fault but my own, and I offer no excuses,” Murphy said in a statement issued after an Allegheny County Common Pleas judge ruled that he must be deposed in a Pittsburgh couple's divorce case.
Records of Murphy's deposition will be unsealed and the proceeding will be open to the public, according to court records in the divorce case of Jesse Sally, 36, and Shannon Edwards, 32. Murphy also will be required to produce a calendar of his political and work events from Jan. 1, 2016, to the present, along with all communications he had with Edwards, including text messages and emails.
Sally, listed in court documents as a sports medicine and pain physiologist, filed a motion in July to depose Murphy. Records related to the divorce case had been sealed since last year when Edwards, listed as a child and forensic psychologist in court documents, filed a motion to keep them private.
Murphy, 64, said in Wednesday's statement that he became involved in the extramarital affair last year. Murphy — who is married, according to the biography on his congressional website — asked the news media to respect his family's privacy and indicated he will have nothing further to say on the matter.
Murphy is in his eighth term representing a congressional district that includes parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland, Washington and Greene counties. He chairs the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and serves on three other subcommittees. In 2015, the Washington, D.C.-based Family Research Council presented Murphy with its “True Blue” award for having a congressional voting record that it said supported family values, religious freedom, human life and individual liberty.
