Dartmouth’s plastic bag ban takes effect in September
DARTMOUTH — The thin-film plastic bag ban will go into effect across town on Sept. 10, according to Town Administrator Shawn MacInnes at a recent Select Board meeting.
On Jan. 8, MacInnes sent letters alerting businesses that operate at least 5,000 square feet of interior retail space of the date.
The ban was approved by Town Meeting in June.
The bylaw prohibits the use, distribution and sale of thin-film plastic bags by merchants with a fine of $200 for each violation.
It will affect merchants with a gross floor space of at least 5,000 square feet. The ban doesn’t include stocking and selling items that are pre-packaged in thin plastic bags by the manufacturer or wholesale distributor.
Also exempt are packaging or wrapping bulk items, meat and seafood, bakery products, flowers and potted plants, newspapers and magazines in thin-film plastic bags before checkout.Related content
