Trump Vetoed the Yemen War Powers Resolution. Now What?

Just Foreign Policy

Call 202-224-3121
and Urge the Senate to Override Trump's Veto

You might have heard the news. President Trump just vetoed the Yemen War Powers Resolution after he campaigned on ending endless wars. This is a shameful thing to do as millions of Yemenis teeter on the brink of famine because of US support for this illegal war.
Now what you ask? Well first, we must take a moment to grieve. We must grieve for the Yemenis that have died and those that continue to perish because of US support for the Saudi/UAE led coalition’s war in Yemen. The way JFP sees it, this is now Trump’s war. It’s Trump VS a bipartisan majority in Congress that supported the Yemen WPR and the majority of Americans on the left and right who want a just foreign policy based on cooperation, diplomacy and the rule of law. Trump can never again claim to be putting America First while prolonging an illegal war that makes Americans less safe and costs tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s not America First to give a blank check to a Saudi regime that murdered US resident Jamal Khashoggi. It's not America First to support a genocide.
While we may be frustrated, it’s not time to give up. It’s time to double down on our efforts to end this horrible war and fundamentally change our US-Saudi alliance. We’ve got the momentum and we can’t be stopped. Here are some next steps:
1. We should push for a successful override vote. Call your Senators today at (202)-224-3121 and request they vote to override this veto.
2. Let's pressure Congress to defund our support for the Yemen war through the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) votes this summer and also push Congress to end to arm sales to Saudi and the UAE. Ask your Rep to become a cosponsor of HR643 to prohibit US support for Saudi Arabia.
3. We should use this veto to weaken Trump in the lead up to the 2020 Presidential election. This is a major vulnerability for #FaminePresident Trump with Republicans who believed him when he said he wanted to end endless wars. Vetoing the Yemen WPR is a broken campaign promise that we will never let him or his supporters forget.
4. Advocates for ending this war should keep pushing all sides of this conflict for a diplomatic solution in Yemen. Btw, did you see the major breakthrough in peace talks that just happened only a few days ago? Both sides have finally agreed to Phase One of the peace talks. Our advocacy work is having a real world impact. Let’s keep going!
5. We should also urge members of Congress to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump for violating US law. Trump is keeping us in a war after Congress said to get out. When the President commits an unconstitutional act, that is an impeachable offense. Sign the petition.

6. We should never give up! We have the momentum here and together we can end this war. Let's keep pushing.

Thanks for all that you do to advance a more just foreign policy. We are ready to keep going! Will you join us?
