SUMMARY:
CAR SURGING WHILE DRIVING AND RADIO WOULD CUT OUT AND THE TOYOTA EMBLEM AND WORD TOYOTA APPEARS ON SCREEN. 1ST VISIT DEALER STATED A COMPUTER CHIP NEEDED UPDATE. THIS FIXED THE SURGING WHILE DRIVING BUT DID NOT FIX THE RADIO FROM CUTTING OUT. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE RADIO SHUT DOWN. SECOND VISIT BACK TO DEALER, HAD THE CAR 10 DAYS AND WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE RADIO SHUTTING OFF. DEALER REPLACED THE EXTENSION MODULE. CAR RETURNED AND STILL RADIO WAS CUTTING OUT. 3RD TIME DEALER REPLACED THE ENTIRE RADIO UNIT, WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE RADIO WAS DOING IT AGAIN.FOURTH VISIT BACK TO DEALER. DEALER DISCONNECTED EXTENSION MODULE, RADIO STILL CUT OUT, REPLACED RADIO AND AMPLIFIER FROM NEW CAR SITTING ON THE LOT, RADIO STILL CUT OUT. SERVICE MANAGER DROVE CAR HOME FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND RADIO WAS STILL CUTTING OUT. TRAVELING SERVICE REP WAS CALLED IN ON 2 OCCASIONS TO DIAGNOSE. TRAVELING SERVICE REP IS DRIVING A TOYOTA TACOMA THAT DOES THE SAME THING BUT IS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER RETURNED THE CAR AND SAID IT WAS NOT THEIR ISSUE AND IT IS A HD RADIO SIGNAL BEING SENT OUT BY 98.9, A ENTERCOM BROADCASTING COMPANY AND THAT THEIR EQUIPMENT WAS WORKING IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH THE INSTALLED EQUIPMENT. TALKING WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY STATED THE PROBLEM WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. I CONTACTED 5 TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND NONE OF THEM HAVE HEARD OF THIS ISSUE OR HAD A CUSTOMER BRING THEIR CAR IN FOR THE SAME ISSUE. TALKING WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY STATED THEY WERE ONLY DEALING WITH MY CAR AND NOT CONCERNED WITH OTHER CARS HAVING THIS ISSUE. I AM HAVING TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I CANNOT SEE A HD RADIO SIGNAL SHUTTING THE ENTIRE RADIO DOWN AND THEN RESTARTING. WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURS IT CAUSES THE LIGHTS ON THE SIDE DISPLAY BUTTONS OF THE RADIO TO ALSO GO OUT AND COME BACK ON.

SHE HAS A CARPORT IN WHICH HER CAR WAS PARKED AND I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO CRASH INTO THE CARPORT AND HER CAR. IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING AND IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TOMORROW TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. IT HAPPENED SO FAST AND SO UNEXPECTED I'M NOT SURE WHAT REALLY HAPPENED, ONLY WHAT I FELT LIKE HAPPENED. MY FIRST IMPRESSION WAS THE FEELING OF DRIVING A REAR WHEEL DRIVE CAR ON ICE. THE CAR SQUIRMS LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO LOOSE CONTROL AND GO INTO A SPIN, OR LIKE THE REAR OF THE CAR WANTS TO MOVE SIDEWAYS. I AM A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER 59 YEARS OLD AND CONSIDER MYSELF AN EXCELLENT DRIVER IN ALL CONDITIONS AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING IN MINNESOTA WINTERS ALL MY LIFE. I RENTED A TOYOTA CAMRY 2013 IN DECEMBER 2012. WHILE SITTING IN THE TRAFFIC AT LOW SPEED, I NOTICED THAT THE FRONT VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF BUCHANAN AND US 93. I IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED ON THE BRAKE PAD WHILE THE CRUISER WAS ON, HOWEVER, THE BRAKE DID NOT RESPOND. THE RENTAL CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AND KEPT MOVING FORWARD. EVENTUALLY, IT HIT THE FRONT VEHICLE. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED BECAUSE OF LOW SPEED. IF IT WERE A NORMAL FUNCTIONAL CAR, THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE STOPPED BECAUSE THE SPEED WAS VERY LOW. BUT IN THIS CASE, THE RENTAL CAR CAUSED THE ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF ITS POOR QUALITY. THE CAR WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED. IN CONTRAST, THE VEHICLE IN THE FRONT, A SUV, HAD NO DAMAGE. AFTER THE ACCIDENT, I CHECKED THE SCENE AND DID NOT FIND ANY TIRE BRAKE MARK ON THE GROUND, WHICH SUGGESTED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY BEFORE THE ACCIDENT, I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE RENTAL CAR HAD MUCH SLOW RESPONSE FROM THE BRAKE WHEN THE CRUISE WAS ON, AND THE BRAKE SEEMED TO BE MUCH MORE SENSITIVE WHEN THE CRUISE WAS OFF. IN ORDER TO PROTECT OTHER DRIVERS ON HIGHWAY, I STRONGLY REQUEST NHTSA TO LAUNCH AN INVESTIGATION ON TOYOTA CAMRY'S BRAKE SYSTEM. IF ANY DEFECT IS IDENTIFIED, THEY SHOULD RECALL ALL THE PROBLEMATIC VEHICLES. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE SPEED WERE HIGH, AND THINGS COULD BE BLOODY AND HOFFIFYING. ON 12/31/2012 (THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND DRY, IT WAS A CLOUDY DAY, NO RAIN, SNOW, ICE ON THE ROAD) WHILE STARTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP LIGHT, TURNING INTO A LANE, AFTER I STOPPED PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR KEPT GETTING FASTER AND FASTER (THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T GET STUCK AND MY FOOT WASN'T ON IT), WHEN I STARTED TO TURN INTO A LANE, THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP AND TO AVOID A CRASH I HAD TO TURN THE WHEEL TO THE OTHER SIDE, I ENDED UP DOING A DIAGONAL SKID INTO THE OTHER LANE, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP AND STRAIGHTEN IT OUT AND KEEP GOING. SINCE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP THE CAR JERKED ME PRETTY HARD AND MY NECK AND ARM STARTED TO HURT SINCE THEN AND I AM SCHEDULED TO TAKE PHYSICAL THERAPY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM FOR SERVICE (FROM 1/2/2013 - 1/10/2013) AND AFTER I PICKED IT UP I'VE BEEN HAVING THE RPM STICKING AT 1.3 ALL THE TIME SO NOW IT'S WORSE THAN WHEN I HAD IT LAST. THE CAR DOESN'T FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE AND I DON'T WANT TO PUT MY LIFE OR OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES AT RISK. SOMEONE HAD LEFT A CAR ILLEGALLY PARKED ON AN ON RAMP AND WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME THE OTHER NIGHT I NEVER SAW THE CAR PARKED THERE DO TO THE POOR LIGHTING FROM MY CAR AND AS I WAS TRYING TO MERGE INTO THE TRAVEL LANE I SLAMMED INTO THE PARKED CAR. FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT INJURED HOWEVER THE NEXT PERSON MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE AND I CANNOT IGNORE THIS. I HAVE TAKEN TEST DRIVES WITH THEIR SERVICE PEOPLE, AND EVEN HAD THE TOYOTA FACTORY SERVICE REP DRIVE THE CAR WITH ME. HE ORDERED THE TOW IN TO BE ADJUSTED AND THE TIRES ROTATED. HAD THAT DONE A FEW DAYS AGO AND NOW THE CAR CONSTANTLY NEEDS PRESSURE ON THE WHEEL, TOWARD THE RIGHT, TO KEEP IT GOING STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD. IT IS MOST NOTICEABLE WHILE YOU ARE IN THE PASSING LANE AT 70 MPH. YESTERDAY I MADE A TRIP TO A CITY ABOUT 90 MILES AWAY. COMING HOME I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE MOST OF THE TIME. I ENDED UP WITH A REALLY BAD CRAMP IN MY LEFT ARM FROM HOLDING CONSTANT RIGHT PRESSURE ON THE WHEEL FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. YOU DON'T DARE LOOK ANYWHERE BUT STRAIGHT AHEAD AS YOU MUST CONSTANTLY KEEP THE STEERING CORRECTED TO STAY IN YOUR LANE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUES AS YOUR TOTAL ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO KEEPING THE CAR IN A STRAIGHT LINE. IF YOU ARE DISTRACTED, FOR EVEN A MOMENT, OR LOOK TO EITHER SIDE YOU END UP QUICKLY DRIVING OUT OF YOUR LANE. NOT A GOOD THING, PARTICULARLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT 70 MPH! MY 2012 CAMRY SE HAS RECENTLY BEGAN TO HAVE TIRE PRESSURE WARNINGS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND WAS ASSURED THAT IT WAS ONLY THE CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE THAT WAS CAUSING THE WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE TIRE PRESSURES AND RELEASED THE VEHICLE. THE NEXT DAY THE PROBLEM RETURNED INDICATING THAT A DIFFERENT TIRE WAS THE CAUSE (A DIFFERENT ICON ON THE DISPLAY). I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND WAS AGAIN INSURED THAT IT WAS ONLY THE CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE THAT WAS CAUSING THE WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. THIS TIME THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE TIRE PRESSURES OVER THE RECOMMENDED PRESSURES TO TRY TO COMPENSATE FOR THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES, BEING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA I FELT THIS WAS NOT A VERY VALID ASSESSMENT BUT LEFT IT TO THE DEALER TO ADJUST THE TIRE PRESSURES AGAIN. ONE WEEK WENT BY AND AGAIN THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ON AND AGAIN A THIRD ICON WAS ILLUMINATED AND THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ON. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOOK THE CAR INTO THE SERVICE BAY. THE TECH TOLD ME THAT INDEED ONE TIRE WAS LOW AND THAT HE HAD REMOVED THE TIRE, CHECKED IT COMPLETELY BY DUNKING IT IN A WATER TANK BUT COULD NOT FIND ANY AIR LEAKING. THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE TIRE PRESSURE FOR THE THIRD TIME AND INCREASED THE AIR PRESSURE EVEN MORE THAN THE LAST TIME. SO AFTER THREE TRIPS TO THE DEALER THEY INSURED ME THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE SENSING SYSTEM, THE TEMPERATURE CHANGE MUST BE CAUSING THE WARNING LIGHT, ONE TIRE WAS LEAK TESTED WITH NO LEAK RESULTS AND I WAS SENT HOME AGAIN WITH THE TIRES INFLATED 3 TO 4 PSI OVER THE RECOMMENDED MANUFACTURERS SETTING. I WAS TOLD THAT IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN TO BRING IT BACK AND THEY WOULD NEED THE CAR FOR THE DAY TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE ISSUE IS WITH THE VEHICLE. THE LOWERING OF THE TIRE PRESSURE CREATES OTHER PROBLEMS,SUCH AS LESS GAS MILEAGE, TIRE WEAR AND COULD CAUSE A BLOWOUT, HE SAID HE WOULD ARRANGE FOR A TOYOTA ENGINEER TO COME AND CHECK MY CAR. I WENT TO PICK UP MY VEHICLE ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2012. ON THE WAY I FOUND THE VEHICLE WAS RIGID AND THE SUSPENSION WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WHEN CAR HIT VARIOUS IMPERFECTIONS IN THE ROAD THERE WAS A BANGING NOISE AND THE CAR WOULD VIBRATE. I FELT DIZZY AS DURING MY TIME SPENT DRIVING CAR. THE CAR SEEMS UNSAFE TO USE. THIS SHOULD NOT OCCUR ON A VEHICLE THAT COST $31K AND ON THE FIRST DAY THAT I AM DRIVING VEHICLE. IN ADDITION THE STEERING FELT MORE WEIGHTED ON THE LEFT AS OPPOSED TO THE RIGHT. WHEN I TURNED LEFT THERE WAS GREATER RESISTANCE. I CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER THAT SAME DAY AND HE INDICATED HE FELT IT MAYBE A TIRE PRESSURE PROBLEM. HE THEN STATED THAT I SHOULD BRING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE IS. I LATER DISCOVERED THAT THE RADIO SOUND FLUCTUATED. I HAD CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CONFIRM MY APPOINTMENT AND DISCOVERED THAT AN APPOINTMENT WAS NEVER MADE. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA MAIN OFFICE AND THEY PROVIDED ME WITH A CASE # [XXX]. I RECENTLY PURCHASE A NEW TOYOTA CAMRY XLE. I WISH TO REPORT A CONDITION THAT EXISTS IN THE DESIGN OF THE MECHANISM WHICH HOLDS THE TRUNK LID IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION WHILE UNLOADING OR LOADING ARTICLES INTO OR OUTOF THE TRUNK MY EXPERIENCE IS AS FOLLOWS: I HAVE PUT ITEMS INTO THE TRUNK ON OCCASION (ITS A NEW CAR), AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ON A LEVEL SURFACE. ONCE WHILE I HAD RAISED THE TRUNK LID IN MY GARAGE IT DROPPED DONE AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT AND PUT IT BACK UP. THERE IS A FULL UPRIGHT POSITION FOR THE TRUNK LID WHICH I WOULD ASSUME THAT IS THE MOST SECURE POSITION. HOWEVER IT IS A POSITION THAT IS RATHER HIGH TO REACH (I AM 5' 11" TALL.) IT IS A STRETCH FOR ME. I WOULD ASSUME THAT A PERSON OF A SMALLER HEIGHT OR A CHILD WOULD BE NOT ABLE TO REACH THIS POSITION FOR SAFETY. I RECENTLY CAME BACK FROM THE STORE AND PARKED IN FRONT MY HOME ON A SLIGHT INCLINED DRIVEWAY AND OPENED THE TRUNK LID TO WHAT I WAS USE TO IN MY GARAGE WHICH WAS LEVEL. W\HEN I REACHED IN TO REMOVE THE GROCERIES THE TRUNK LID FELL DOWN WITH GREAT AMOUNT OF SPEED AND HIT THE BRIDGE OF MY DOSE. IT MISSED MY GLASSES BY AN EIGHTH OF AN INCH BUT KNOCKED THEM OFF. I PUT MY HAND TO MY NOSE AND IT WAS BLEEDING AND SPENT THE NEXT HOUR TRYING TO STOPPED THE BLEEDING SINCE I AM ON ASPIRIN THERAPY. WE ENDED UP GOING TO THE EMG. ROOM TO SEE IF I NEEDED STITCHES. IT ENDED UP BEING A DEEP ABRASION SO THEY PUT SOME COLLIOD MATERIAL ON RAISE UP THE SCAB TO HAVE LESS SCARING. HAD MY GLASSES SHATTERED I WOULD PROBABLY RECEIVED MORE SEVERE INJURIES. THEY WANTED TO DO AN MRI EXAM TO SEE IF I HAD OTHER INJURIES WHICH I DECLINED BECAUSE OF MY MEDICAL WORK EXPERIENCE, L DID NOT FEEL THE EXTRA COST FOR THE MRI WAS JUSTIFIED, BUT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN EXTRA EXPENSE FOR SOMEONE WHO WOULD NOT KNOW THE WHAT VALUE OF THE TEST IN A SIMILAR SITUATION. IN ACTUALITY, THE SYSTEM AS SUCH IS AT BEST ONLY 50% ?HANDSFREE. ONLY INCOMING CALLS MAY BE ENGAGED IN WITHOUT CELL PHONE IN HAND. OUTGOING CALLS MAY BE INITIATED HANDSFREE ONLY IF ONES CELL PHONE ITSELF IS EQUIPPED WITH VOICE-ACTIVATED DIALING, A 4G-TYPE FEATURE I WOULD ESTIMATE ONLY A FAIRLY SMALL MINORITY CURRENTLY POSSESS. I HAVE DRIVEN CAMRYS FOR MORE THAN 2 DECADES. I KNOW IF THERE IS A PROBLEM. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE, THEY HAVE SENT AN ENGINEER SPECIALIST TO CHECK THE CAR. THEY ARE NOT DISCLOSING ANY INFORMATION TO ME, THEY SAY YOU HAVE TO WAIT TILL YOU RECEIVE IN MAIL. ACCORDING TO THEIR ENGINEER SPECIALIST, HE SAYS THE RECORDING BOX(SOMETHING NEW WITH NEW CAMRYS) THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE COLLISION RECORDED. THERE WAS A TIME LAPSE! I HAVE NOT PICKED UP MY CAR BECAUSE I TOTALLY FEEL UNSAFE WITH THAT CAR!!! THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED TO ME!!! NO ONE ON EARTH CAN TELL ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT CAR. I ALMOST HIT MY SON AND HIS FRIEND!!! THE LAWYERS TELL ME SINCE I HAVE NOT HURT ANYONE AND GOTTEN HURT MYSELF, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I ASK YOU TO PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS CASE! SUMMARY:
IT SOMETIMES WILL NOT SHIFT INTO NORMAL REVERSE. ON THESE OCCASIONS, WHEN YOU SHIFT INTO REVERSE ,IT WILL NOT MOVE OR CREEP SLOWLY BACK AS IT NORMALLY DOES. IT FEELS LIKE A BRAKE IS ON AND YOU MUST PUSH HARD ON THE GAS TO GET THE CAR TO BACK UP AT ALL. THE CAR THEN LUNGES BACKWARD UNTIL YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS AND IT WILL JERK TO A STOP WITHOUT YOU EVEN TOUCHING THE BRAKES. THIS IS SCARY WHEN YOU ARE IN A PARKING SPACE AT A RETAIL STORE,RESTAURANT ,ETC. AND HAVE SOMEONE PARKED ON BOTH SIDES OF YOU. YOU CANT BACK UP SLOWLY,ONLY CAN LURCH OUT OF YOUR PARKING SPOT AND HOPE NO PEDESTRIANS OR VEHICLES ARE COMING BY. I FINALLY GOT THE CAR TO DO THIS AT THE DEALER LOT IN DES MOINES,BY DRIVING AND PARKING FOR 48 MINUTES. NOW THE DEALER SAW THE PROBLEM DEALER TECH BACKED THE CAR UP FOR A BLOCK WITH ONE FOOT ON THE GAS AND ONE ON THE BRAKE, AS I TOLD HIM IF HE DROVE FORWARD FOR 50 FEET IT WOULD SNAP OUT OF THE PROBLEM AND WE WOULD BE TRYING TO RECREATE IT AGAIN. NO PROBS SHOW ON SCOPE TESTS TOYOTA HAS NO IDEA WHAT IT IS. BOUGHT THE CAR 03/24/2012 DEALER HAS HAD IT TO LOOK AT OVER 18 DAYS ALREADY IN AND OUT. MY 2012 CAMRY HYBRID STEERS HARD TO THE LEFT WHEN BRAKING WHEN THE ROAD IS CROWNED ALONG THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR REPAIR THREE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN DECEMBER. FIRST TWO TIMES THE DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND THAT TOYOTA HADNĂ‚T REGISTERED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS. THE MOST RECENT VISIT TO THE DEALER HAD A DIFFERENT RESULT. ON MAY 18TH THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM AND THAT TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER OPENED AN INVESTIGATION WITH TOYOTA AND TOYOTA ADMITTED THAT OTHER OWNERS ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR 2012 TCH. TOYOTA AND THE DEALER HAVE NO SOLUTIONS.
