NYC KILL SHELTERS......

Adopt! Don't buy!
Spay & Neuter!

Foster, volunteer, celebrate and support the HEROES!

JUNE - A1056234 - Manhattan - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15 ** AVERAGE SAFER ** A volunteer writes: It is raining puppies at the care center…. June is one of them… Such a pretty face ! Sitting straight like an i, right behind her door and watching like in wonder what is going on around her…Time to go out….June just arrived at the care center. The rain is torrential outside. She walks nicely on the leash in the hallways. I carry her to the yard and we hide under an awning. A feather..June is only 24 pounds at eight months of age…She is just skin and bones under a shiny ebony coat. Her ears are infected and a little wound, healing, can be found on her head. What is your story, little June. You should be a round little dumpling, treasured by a family, throning on a soft red pillow and chewing on a giant nyla bone….June is a bit shy, tentative and so hungry that she could eat my whole bag of treats if I let her. She is not sure , I think , if she should trust me, but ends up on my lap, receiving caresses and giving kisses. She is a baby…Puppies like children are resilient . I know she will soon be running with other youngsters in the yard, having fun, in preparation, I hope , of a new life, as a forever best friend this time. Come and meet lovely June at the Manhattan Care Center. She needs a real owner or family and true love to share.
Another volunteer writes: June reminds me of a little kid pretending to be a grown up. She sits perfectly still in her kennel, and once outside is a bit shy, warming up very quickly. She sits for a treat, hangs her paws over the edge of the bench waiting while I fumble in my bag, wags her tail gently, and tries to get up on the bench with me but is too little. She’s gently playful but I suspect has to learn to be a puppy as she may not have ever had the opportunity to simply play with puppy abandon. She’s a slip of a girl, affectionate, sweet and gentle and is looking for her new family to love her to the moon and back.

ROCKS - A1056040 - Manhattan - Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15 ** RESCUE ONLY ** Young Rocks, barely out of babyhood, is in the fight for his life tonight! Tonight, Rocks is looking for that very dog savvy person who understands that he’s totally lost and confused and so looking for that human to tell him what he should do. He’s been sitting in a cage at Manhattan ACC for many days now as he reportedly bit someone or some animal—its never explained. But at the shelter, this boy, found as a stray, has been acting like the very young pup he is—frisky, active, begging for someone to show him how he’s supposed to behave, begging for somebody to show him he really does have a human who cares about him. But ACC has put him on tomorrow’s euthanasia list and made him New Hope Only. So unless someone works with a rescue to foster or adopt Rocks by noon tomorrow, he will die without ever having had the kind of life he should have had all along.

WILLIE - A1055594 - Brooklyn - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15 ** AVERAGE SAFER ** ** WILLIE IS A GIRL !! ** It is so sad to see such a regal beauty, carrying eighty three pounds of dignity in her back pocket become a scared victim with her tail tucked. Personal problems of her former owner leave this young dog at the mercy of the ACC of NYC. Willie is confused and really wants to go home, but that is not an option. Willie is a large dog, a mixed Pitty dressed in a lovely coat. She is young at two and a half years old. The ACC does not have much time for homesick dogs. The shelter has listed her to be destroyed tomorrow. Willie must find an adopter or foster quickly. She needs time to take things slowly and adjust with the right person. Please share, advocate, and pledge to find a second chance for Willie. Willie needs one hero to step up by noon tomorrow. Willie really needs a home and there is no time to waste.

ORSON WELLES - A1056380 - Manhattan - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15 **ON PUBLIC LIST** A volunteer writes: Walking with Orson Wells is like walking with a celebrity. Admiring glances will follow you, everyone makes a comment, and everyone wants to meet him. He’s happy to oblige, and although a bit shy in initial meeting, he warms up quickly, his tail begins to wag and he’s happy to now add you to his friends list. He’s a big bruiser, a tank, a low rider bull dozer and if we were in school he’d be the popular quarterback all the boys want to be, and all the girls want to be with! His leash manners are lovely, he gives hugs and kisses, sits when asked and takes treats gently. In group play he engages in running play when solicited and loves the ladies! Sweet, friendly and low key, Orson was a delight to spend time with. As the human Orson Wells famously said, “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” So, we’re going to stop our story with our Orson finding his soul mate and going home to his happily ever after. Ask to meet him today.

SAMANTHA - A1055345 - Brooklyn - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15
A volunteer writes: Samantha is a pint-sized firecracker! She is very friendly and wiggly. She seems housebroken and to know some commands; as soon as I ask her to sit she starts to offer me her paws! She absolutely LOVES toys and knows how to have a good time, even without my help. She does lingering play bows with squeaky toys in her mouth, will roll tennis balls with her nose so she can then pounce on them, and can make a stick look like the most fun thing on the planet. She wants to play tug when I try to take them, but will trade for a treat (she’s very food motivated). When one of her balls rolled under a fence she looked like Winnie the Pooh stuck in his honey pot trying to get it back! She’s very curious and will cock her head when she hears interesting noises in the distance (of course, keeping a toy in her mouth the whole time). She is a little blur, but when she has a moment of calm she is very cuddly. She’ll crawl into my lap and press her head against me like she’s giving me a hug. She is eager to please and with sufficient exercise will make such a great companion – she is so sweet, intelligent and fun to be with. She would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

PEANUT - A1056006 - Manhattan - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/09/15 ** AVERAGE SAFER ** A volunteer writes: Peanut? A tongue in cheek name I would say, as our Peanut is not a Peanut….a Cashew maybe, or a Walnut….but he’s too big to be a peanut! He’s gorgeously grey and white, his coat is well groomed and his weight perfect for his size. Willing me to him with his sexy smoldering eyes, I couldn’t resist taking him for a walk. His leash manners are good, he’s likely housetrained and as we head to the backyard he wags his tail at other dogs we pass. Off leash he explores the pen, isn’t interested in treats or a toy as he sniffs to learn to his environment, and then comes into my lap for some snuggles. In his first group he was a bit selective and didn’t really engage in play which is in keeping with his overall personality as he adjusts to this new and sometimes stressful environment. Peanut is gorgeous, old enough to not engage in puppy crazies, and young enough to enjoy playtime, good exercise and lots of snuggles.

SAMARA - A1037436 - Manhattan - Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 11/9/15
** NEW HOPE RESCUE ONLY ** After five years living as a pet, it is difficult to deal with the chaos of the ACC of NYC. Samara is a timid spayed Miniature Poodle Yorkshire Terrier mix, two popular breeds that have lots of experienced followers. The ACC has listed Samara to be destroyed tomorrow. She is only ten pounds, a tiny little dog, that needs slow beginning that are under the guidance of a New Hope Rescue. Her SAFER behavioral exam is good, but the shelter feels she would be better in a home with no small children. Samara needs a patient and quiet place to readjust at a slower pace. Please share, advocate, and pledge – a life is at stake. If you can help Samara, please email the Urgent Help Desk. A New Hope Rescue must be part of her exit strategy along with an experienced foster or adopter. Do not let her die without a chance to shine.

Rudy: Abuser severely starves dog until he could not stand or walk!
Rescue Dogs Rock received a plea from the Brooklyn NYC ACC late at night for an emergency dog who needed immediate medical attention. The dog's name is Rudy, an estimated, 5 year old male pit bull who was so severely emaciated he could not stand or walk. Rudy's body score was a 1/9-the worst possible!! Rudy was brought in as a stray, but we can guarantee, he did not walk in from anywhere.
This is a dog in horrific shape, lucky to be alive. Rudy has open pressure sores, oozing, all over his body. This is a dog who sustained severe abuse and neglect, likely for years! Rudy has not been "up and about" for a very long time & his body condition proves that.
Rudy deserves better from humans and we are committed to giving him every opportunity to pull through and not only survive, but thrive!
Please consider making a purchase to help save him! We have partnered with Rescue Dogs Rock to raise the funds needed to care for Rudy. With every product purchased, we will donate $10 to give Rudy the life he truly deserves and was always meant to have.

Rescued Puppy Mill Dogs Get a Second Chance

Published on Sep 17, 2015
In July 2014, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter and Cherokee County Marshal's Office busted a huge puppy mill that had been operating in Georgia since the 1980s. All dogs and puppies were rescued from the horrific facility and were cared for at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter until they were ready for rescue or adoption. Many pregnant females gave birth shortly after the bust, and raising the final total of rescued dogs even further. The owners of the puppy mill plead guilty to 25 charges of animal cruelty and were sentenced to 25 consecutive years of probation.

This video takes you through the puppy mill bust firsthand, then shows you the day the dogs were adopted, and a very special reunion that took place one year later. Don't support this cruelty by buying puppies from flea markets or pet stores, or online. Instead, check out your local shelter or rescue group, or find a truly responsible breeder.

Say no to puppy mills!

Puppy Mill Awareness Day is September 27, 2015.
