33rd Anniversary Of The Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster

Dear Friend,

Today is the 33rd anniversary of the horrific Bhopal gas leak disaster. The culprits have not been punished for the greatest industrial disaster in history. The victims have not been compensated either. There was little progress during 2017 on the most pressing issues concerning the gas-victims, which is a matter of serious concern. The current status of issues such as health care, enhancement of compensation, rehabilitation, prosecution of the accused, remediation of the environment, etc., are briefly recounted here

Mediabiasfactcheck.com gives Countercurrents.org their highest rating HIGH in Factual reporting. While popular darlings like Buzzfeed gets a MIXED rating. The irony is that the likes of NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times which chased Saddam's and Gaddafi's WMDs and helped to cause so much death and mayhem also get a HIGH rating. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/countercurrents-org/

Also more stories from around the world.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. by Franklin Lamb

Iran’s people, who are much like Lebanese and Americans in this observer’s opinion, may be allies with the people of Lebanon as they seek their Independence.Increasingly Iranians are rejecting their imposed Ali Khomeini Supreme Leader of Iran absolute dictatorship in favor of human rights and democracy and engaging with the outside World. Several of this observer’s Iranian friends wish Lebanon well and object to Iran’s involvement in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Bahrain and elsewhere in this region.

Holding Uber Accountable: Litigating Over Data Hacks
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

It sent patrons and users into fits of puzzled anger.  It numbed a good many more who had placed mistaken faith in its operations.  Rapacious, predatory Uber, a ride-hailing company famed for its international ruthlessness, had behaved accordingly.  Last week, the firm revealed that it had received a massive hack in 2016, failing to notify customers and regulators that a breach of security had taken place.

Why The Wait For The City Bus Gets Longer
by Vidyadhar Date

The proposed high speed Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail project falls in this category. It is unfair to condemn as Luddites those opposing fancy projects. Research shows that popular concepts about Luddites are wrong. Luddites in England were not opposed to machinery as such. They were protesting against an oppressive system and attacks on their livelihoods.

Marital Rape Judgment, Gender Justice And RSS Position
by Jayashubha

The Supreme Court recently gave the judgment that sex with minor wife can be considered a rape but if 18 years and beyond, marital rape cannot be considered a criminal offence. As per exception 2 of section 375 of IPC sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife, the wife not being under 18 years of age, is not rape

The Indian Village: A Window Into Indian Society
by Moin Qazi

The Indian village has been celebrated by every poet who has admitted to having been touched by India including Rudyard Kipling and Rabindranath Tagore. Social scientists of the past wrote about Indian villages as virtually self-sufficient communities with few ties to the outside world. There is nothing unusual or novel in the city-bred person’s belief in the regenerative powers of the village. This nostalgia has been expressed since the 19th century in literary form in fiction and poetry and in political form through the slogan: `Back to the villages‘.
