MH370 Search: Exploration firm claims wreckage found 29 Apr 2014 An exploration company, GeoResonance, has claimed it found the wreckage of the crashed Malaysia Airlines flight, MH370, six weeks after it left Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing on March 8. The Adelaide-based GeoResonance said yesterday the possible wreckage was found in the Bay of Bengal, 5,000km away from the current search location in the southern Indian Ocean off Perth, with the company beginning its own search on March 10. Department of Civil Aviation director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told The Star that Malaysia was unaware of the report of the finding.

MH370: 'Highly Unlikely' Debris Will Be Found 28 Apr 2014 The Australian prime minister says it is "highly unlikely" debris from missing flight MH370 will be found on the ocean surface. Speaking from the Australian capital Canberra, Tony Abbott said the hunt for the Malaysia Airlines flight will now focus on underwater search operations. "I am now required to say to you that it is highly unlikely at this stage that we will find any aircraft debris on the ocean surface," Mr Abbott said. [Check Diego Garcia.]

Cesium levels triple in Oregon tuna following Fukushima nuclear meltdowns 28 Apr 2014 Radiation in some albacore tuna caught off the Oregon coast tripled after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown[s] in Japan, a new study from Oregon State University shows. Researchers tested 26 Pacific albacore. They discovered that levels of specific radioactive isotopes did increase after the accident, although by a minute [?] amount... The radioactive plume is expected to reach the West Coast this month. Federal agencies aren't testing for it.

CIA's Afghan 'torturer-in-chief' lives in two-story house in Southern California --'How he managed to land in the United States remains murky.' 28 Apr 2014 In Afghanistan, his presence was enough to cause prisoners to tremble. Hundreds in his organization's custody were beaten, shocked with electrical currents or subjected to other abuses tortures documented in human rights reports. Some allegedly disappeared. And then Haji Gulalai disappeared as well. After 2009, his whereabouts were unknown. Today, Gulalai lives in a pink two-story house in Southern California, on a street of stucco homes on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

US sends 150 troops to Russia's border --US troops land in Estonia for war games on Russia's doorstep 28 Apr 2014 Amid escalating crisis in Ukraine, the United States has sent about 150 American troops to Estonia that has a mutual border with Russia. The troops from the 173rd Airborne Brigade landed at the Amari airbase in western Estonia on Monday as part of a contingent of 600 to participate in a series of military drills throughout the year. At least 450 US soldiers already arrived in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland over the last week for joint war games, according to the US Department of Defense.

Obama rolls out new sanctions on Russia, Moscow says it won't hurt 28 Apr 2014 New round of Western sanction against Russia will target seven individuals and 17 companies. They are meant to affect Moscow’s stance over the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. The individuals listed by the US Department of Treasury on Monday include Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, chair of the parliamentary commission on Foreign Affairs, Aleksey Pushkov, chief of presidential office, Vyacheslav Volodin, and Igor Sechin, the head of Rosneft oil company.

The new 10-year military pact will give the American military greater access to selected military camps across the South East Asian nation and allow it to preposition fighter jets and ships.

Nearly 60 people killed in Iraq bomb attacks 28 Apr 2014 Nearly sixty people have been killed in a series of bomb attacks across Iraq as the country prepares for parliamentary elections. The deadliest incident on Monday occurred in the Kurdish populated town of Khanaqin where 30 people were killed and 50 others injured after a bombing targeted a political gathering. According to reports, 27 members of the Iraqi security forces were also killed in a series of bomb attacks across the country on the same day.

Israeli settlers destroy olive trees in West Bank 29 Apr 2014 A group of Israeli settlers have uprooted more than 150 olive trees south of the occupied West Bank city of Nablus. The Israeli settlers on Monday raided the village of Huwwara near Nablus and cut down over 150 trees belonging to Palestinian farmers, according to Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian official in charge of monitoring illegal settlers' activities in the area. In a similar move on Sunday, the Israeli settlers destroyed over 60 trees.

Mission Creep: Homeland Security a 'runaway train' 27 Apr 2014 In November 2002, 14 months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks [inside job], President [sic] George W. Bush signed a bill into law establishing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. More than 11 years later, the department's mission has expanded - greatly. Today, in addition to protecting America's borders and airports, the department is interrogating people suspected of pirating movies at Ohio theaters, seizing counterfeit NBA merchandise in San Antonio and working pickpocket cases alongside police in Albuquerque. Homeland Security agents are visiting elementary schools and senior centers to warn of dangers lurking on the Internet.

GOP Rep. Michael Grimm arrested, indicted on 20 counts 28 Apr 2014 Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., has been indicted by the Justice Department for mail, wire and health care fraud and perjury, among other charges. The Republican congressman, who has maintained his innocence, was booked at the New York FBI office in lower Manhattan Monday morning, according to the Associated Press. The 20-count indictment, unsealed late Monday morning, includes five counts of mail fraud, five counts of wire fraud, three counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal tax returns, one count of conspiring to defraud the United States, one count of impeding the Internal Revenue Service, one count of health care fraud, one count of engaging in a pattern or practice of hiring and continuing to employ unauthorized aliens, two counts of perjury and one count of obstructing an official proceeding.

Tornadoes kill 9 in South; warnings active in Ala. 28 Apr 2014 Tornadoes flattened homes and businesses, flipped trucks over on highways and bent telephone poles into 45-degree angles as they barreled through Alabama and Mississippi on Monday, part of a storm system that killed at least nine people in the South and brought the overall death toll from two days of severe weather in the country to at least 26. Tens of thousands of people were without power in Alabama, Mississippi, and in the state of Kentucky, which did not report tornadoes but was slammed with severe storms.

At least 16 dead after tornadoes in Arkansas, Oklahoma; more tornadoes expected in South 28 Apr 2014 Tornadoes tore through a stretch of central United States on Sunday, killing at least 16 people and leaving behind a river of carnage in Arkansas and stretches of devastation in Oklahoma and Kansas. Even as emergency responders continue searching for people amid the destruction, additional twisters are forecast for Monday. In Arkansas, reports of tornadoes touching down began on Sunday evening. A tornado that crossed Interstate 40 was reported to be half a mile wide, according to the National Weather Service.

Demand Sanctuary for Florida Manatees 28 Apr 2014 Facing a barrage of threats, America's beloved gentle giants are being overcrowded when they try to seek refuge in natural springs in Kings Bay in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Throngs of boaters, snorkelers and kayakers mob the entrances to warm water springs where Florida manatees seek to escape cold winter waters... Sometimes, the manatees are unable to reach or are pushed out of the warm water springs they need to survive. There have even been instances when mothers were separated from their dependent calves by careless visitors. Please urge FWS to step up protections of the vulnerable Florida manatee population!
