Forty Indians Abducted In Mosul As Iraqi Security Forces Fight Back
By Countercurrents.org

http://www.countercurrents.org/cc180514.htm

40 Indian citizens had been kidnapped in the violence-hit Iraqi city of Mosul. The men are construction workers. India had not received any ransom demand. Meanwhile Iraqi security forces have battled rebels targeting the country's main oil refinery and have claimed to regain partial control of a city near the Syrian border

Sectarian Monster Reawakened: Redrawing The Map Of Iraq, Again
By Ramzy Baroud

http://www.countercurrents.org/baroud180614.htm

The systematic political marginalization of Iraq's Sunni communities is both senseless and unsustainable. A new political and social contract is needed to re-order the mess created by the US invasion, and other foreign intervention in Iraq, including that of Iran

Who Are Iraq’s Sunni Arabs And What Did We Do To Them?
By Juan Cole

http://www.countercurrents.org/cole180614.htm

Sunni Iraqis had been in the 20th century cosmopolitan and often modernists. Many were liberals yearning for democracy. From 1968 they turned to more of a Soviet model, a strongly secular one. They have turned in desperation to rural fundamentalists who want a medieval caliphate only because of the vast reversal in their fortunes resulting from the Bush invasion and occupation, and the unfair policies of the Shiite government, which has turned them from an elite into an underclass. They are capable, trained, educated people. They aren’t going to put up with that, and if turning to al-Qaeda is the only way to avoid that fate, they are often willing now to do it

A Brief History of Iraq For Westerners
By David Swanson

http://www.countercurrents.org/swanson180614.htm

During the 8 years of U.S.-led occupation people mistook purely irrational violence that had been bubbling under the surface for centuries for resistance to the occupiers, and now some imagine that part of the violence against the puppet government is motivated by grievances against that government

The IB Report Generously Promotes Foreign Interests
By Vandana Shiva

http://www.countercurrents.org/shiva180614A.htm

Intelligence agencies are supposed to protect the safety and security of a nation and its citizens from external threats. Tragically, we now have a report from the Intelligence Bureau that promotes the very foreign interests that are threatening our seed and food sovereignty, the livelihood of our farmers and the health of our citizens. The IB report, which was commissioned by the UPA government but submitted to the newly elected NDA government, blindly promotes genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods

Foreign Hand In The IB Report?
Statement By Vandana Shiva, Aruna Rodrigues & Kavitha Kuruganti

http://www.countercurrents.org/shiva180614.htm

India’s Sovereignty, Security and Freedom at risk- Is the IB being used by foreign corporations to take over India’s vital seed sector?

Antagonizing Palestinians: Australia’s Linguistic Blunder Snowballs
By Nicola Nasser

http://www.countercurrents.org/nasser180614.htm

Reacting to antagonized Palestinian snowballing protests to her government’s decision on June 5 to reverse a 47-year old bipartisan consensus on describing eastern Jerusalem as “occupied,” Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on June 13 denied any “change in the Australian government’s position.” On June 5, Australian Attorney-General George Brandis in a statement said: ''The description of East Jerusalem as 'Occupied East Jerusalem' is a term freighted with pejorative implications, which is neither appropriate nor useful.''

Sardar Sir Passes Away
By Farooque Chowdhury

http://www.countercurrents.org/chowdhury180614.htm

Sardar Fazlul Karim has passed away on the early hours of June 15, 2014 in a Dhaka hospital. He was 89. To many, the National Professor was Sardar Sir, a teacher. And, many knew, he was a communist to his last breath. He had no confusion about humanity’s journey to communism

Greatest Generation In Action: Zoot Suit Riots, June 1943
By Mickey Z.

http://www.countercurrents.org/mickeyz180614.htm

Racist scapegoating is an enduring American tradition. White supremacy is a dangerous reality and continues to be a dangerous reality. Harking back to the “good old days” is neither a helpful nor revolutionary choice. It’s long overdue for those who benefit from this oppressive and corrupt system to recognize and reject the normalization of their subsequent privilege

State Intolerance Must Be Stopped
By Devika Mittal

http://www.countercurrents.org/mittal180614.htm

Instead of working to curb this culture of intolerance which leads to enmity and riots, the government is only encouraging it. The state is becoming intolerant of dissent and in doing so, it is challenging the very spirit of democracy
