Suspicious fire destroys Middleboro gristmill

MIDDLEBORO – Authorities are investigating a fire that broke out at an abandoned gristmill on Soule Street late Monday afternoon, leaving it a heap of smoking timbers.
Police say while the fire is suspicious, it appears to be an isolated incident. The fire was reported just after 4:30 p.m. and by 7:30 p.m., firefighters had smothered the blaze in water and foam.
Peter Reynolds, who lives nearby, said the building collapsed and sent timbers into the roadway.
“The utility pole across the street was on fire and the wires were melting,” Reynolds said. “It was a serious barn burner.”
The black smoke could be seen for miles. Rick and Julie Leo spotted the billowing smoke from the Spring Street exit on Route 44 in Plympton. When Leo saw the thick black smoke he said he thought, “Wow it looks close to our neighborhood.”
Sure enough the blaze was about a half-mile from his house.
Fire Capt. Richard Cummings said the old timbers were very dry and were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
Cummings said when the building collapsed, several timbers fell into a cellar hole behind the building and the fire spread about 150-feet into the woods. He said a DPW crew pulled the timbers out of the cellar hole to make sure the fire did not re-ignite.
Cummings said the fire appears to be suspicious. Police Detective Robert W. Lake is assisting in the investigation.
