Sochi poisoning stray dogs ahead of Olympics

IFAW excoriates Olympics for killing stray dogs

"Culling dogs in Sochi is quite simply the wrong thing to do. It is ineffective and inhumane and makes a mockery of the Sochi claim to be an Olympic event 'In Harmony with Nature'."

IFAW decries killing of stray dogs in Sochi.

2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Stray Dog Cull Shame

Russians rounding up, poisoning stray dogs before the games begin

The Sochi Olympic committee is carrying out a mass extermination of stray animals leading up to the 2014 Winter Games according to a release from the International Fund for Animal Welfare based in Yarmouth Port.

Russia has had a problem with stray dogs for years. There are reportedly no animal shelters to be found in the city where the 2014 Winter Olympics will begin in two days, so a pest control company has usually taken care of the problem when the numbers of strays get out of hand.

Alexei Sorokin, the director general of Basya Services, a local pest control company in Sochi, told the Associated Press on Monday that his company has been getting rid of stray dogs in Sochi for years, and that he now has a contract to exterminate the dogs throughout the Olympic games.

To view a CNN video of the scene, click here.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare issued the following news release:

YARMOUTH PORT: FAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org) is horrified that culling of dogs in Sochi is back on the agenda in preparation for the 2014 winter Olympics.

IFAW has repeatedly offered to help the Environment Department of the Sochi 2014 Olympics Organizing Committee develop and implement a humane and sustainable plan for managing the community's roaming dog population.

"We knew that Sochi officials were feeling time pressure in the lead up to the Games, so we explicitly offered assistance almost a year ago--yet our offers have been met with resounding silence," said Kate Atema, Director of IFAW's Companion Animal Program.

"Culling dogs in Sochi is quite simply the wrong thing to do. It is ineffective and inhumane and makes a mockery of the Sochi claim to be an Olympic event 'In Harmony with Nature'."

Visitors to Sochi would be appalled to know that the city officials attempted to 'clean-up' a perceived dog problem by a mass killing.
IFAW calls on officials to immediately halt plans to cull dogs and to accept the offer of assistance to find humane alternatives that will benefit the people and animals of Sochi for the long term.
IFAW-Russia has been working on stray dog issues in Russia for more than 15 years, including working closely with the Moscow's Mayor's Office to end the practice of killing stray dogs in Moscow.

Ladybird & Caper, Opal & Mittens

Friends of Falmouth Dogs is back--this time with Ladybird & Caper

The impact each dog has on the volunteers

By Pamela Alden Kokmeyer

They dance in and out of our lives. Some are with us ever-so-briefly, and we serve as merely a staging area for the next chapter in their lives. Others stay a while longer, hoping for a chance at a shiny new life. But whether their stays are long or short, each of these dogs has an impact on the volunteers.

They each leave an impression on us. We only hope that we have a similar impact on them. They don’t have to all the small touches that make their lives better—the long walks, the car rides, the laps, sufficient food, soft blankets, new toys, new friends—we simply hope they remember that a turning point occurred in their lives when they arrived in ours.

Nobody ever promised Caper that life was fair. And it’s not. It’s not fair that this older German shepherd is in need of a new home in his senior years. At some point in his past, he was a family pet, and, we’d like to think, loved. But somewhere along the line, that must have changed because he was found as a stray. No, we never promised him that life was fair but we did promise him that we would find him a permanent home of his own. And we are planning to keep that promise.

And the need is more acute now that his buddy Ladybird has gone into foster care. That’s her in the car the day she headed out. Yep, she is now soaking up all the attention. No sharing required. And it’s all about her—her walks, her toys, her food, her games, her foster mom.

This adult beagle will make an appearance at the shelter every Tuesday from 4 to 5, where she will greet anyone who wants to meet her. She also can be at the shelter on other days if you call and let us know when it’s convenient for you. In the meantime, we will see how she blossoms in a home environment. Three cheers for foster care.

If it were a movie, meeting Kain would be called a “coming attraction.” As it is, it’s a chance to see him in a structured, happy, busy environment. This strapping young boy is part German shepherd, Rottweiler and boxer. He is just over a year old and is getting the amount of exercise his youth and breeds require. Kain is in a boarding/training facility. The facility’s owner has had the chance to evaluate him in detail and she will be happy to share this information with you. Prospective owners are invited to meet him and FFD will pay for any training (for dog and person) during this prospective process.

We refer to them as “bulletin board dogs,” which means they are still in their own homes (not at the shelter) but need new homes. The most recent such dog is Franklin, a 3-year-old male Lab/boxer mix.

Of medium size at 46 pounds, this boy has about a bazillion attributes: he walks well on leash, loves long walks, car rides, tennis balls, playing with the hose, is good with other dogs (he is living with a poodle), knows many commands, is housebroken and not destructive, and emits “happy howls” when you return from a sojourn—even if it’s only down to the store and back. We could go on but you get the picture. We can make arrangements if you’d like to meet him.

And don’t forget to check our website for updates. It often happens that after we go to press with this column, we get a call about a dog needing to be rehomed. When that happens, we post it on our website immediately.
* * *
We want to remind you of our 2014 calendars. Those of you who follow our news will see some of the dogs you read about in 2013. Once orphans, now in families, these dogs represent the fine animals we help each and every day. Calendars are now $10 each and every penny of the profit will support our adoption and medical programs. Surely you can use a nice calendar!
And what supplies do we need? We’re glad you asked. We can always use martingale collars and dog beds (preferably with removable, washable covers); good quality canned dog food; chicken jerky strips (made in USA only, please); and Kong toys. Oh, and volunteers and foster homes, as long as we’re on the subject.
* * *
Come meet the dogs in person and get to know the volunteer crews. Stop by and stay awhile. Walk a dog or just sit with a dog. It’s not often that small gestures can have such large impacts. Every hour you invest in helping our dogs will yield tremendous dividends. You may not see the results, but trust us when we say the dogs are helped immeasurably. You can be part of readying them for new homes and new lives.

Striking short-haired sisters in need of a good home

Meet Opal and Mittens

Opal and Mittens grew up in the same house and would very much like to stay together. People for Cats photo.
Opal and Mittens grew up in the same house and would very much like to stay together. People for Cats photo.

Opal and Mittens are two beautiful, exotic looking blue-eyed sisters that just came in to the shelter.

They are half Siamese, with striking cream-colored coats overlain with very dilute tortoiseshell coloring. Opal is the paler of the two, while Mittens having a bit of black mixed into her coat is darker. They are short-haired, medium to large in size and 5 ½ years old.

Both girls are initially a bit shy, but they are real “love-bugs” if you spend a little bit of time getting to know them. Opal is the more outgoing of the two, readily head-butting for more pets and rubbing against volunteers to get attention. If one sits down with her she’ll start kneading and purring up a storm. Her only drawback is that she is a bit chubby and could afford to loose a little weight. Mittens is the more reserved of the two, but she is just as affectionate once she warms up to a person.

These two girls were surrendered to PFC because their owner had to go to a nursing home. Since they have always lived together, we would prefer to adopt them together to the same home. So if you are looking for a pair of sweet, affectionate, striking beauties these sisters may be just the kitties for you. They would probably do best in a quiet calm home, where they can get the attention and love they deserve.

If you would like to visit with these beautiful sisters, or one of our other equally sweet kitties, come in to the shelter at 44 Beagle Lane in Teaticket. We are open to the public on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or call our hotline for an appointment. Hotline: 508-540-5654.

THIS IS SAD MOLLY -SPENT MOST OF HER LIFE IN A CAGE !!!
SHES ON LONG ISLAND AND NEEDS A HOME BAD !!!
She sits and waits everyday wondering what she did wrong !!...!
*******************************************
This beautiful girl has spent almost half her life in the shelter.
She came in as a stray three years ago and everyone who meets Molly loves her. When I would go to walk Molly she would just melt into you she just didn't want you to stop petting her. It was so sad when she had to go back in because she would stop in her tracks and give you those eyes. She would do everything to avoid going back to her kennel. Molly deservers a home she has been through a lot and wants to live out the rest of her life with someone who will love her. If she could talk Molly would say why doesn't anyone want me. What's wrong with me. She is the most gentle loving dog I have ever meet. Molly is now with Hounds Town USA in Farmingdale NY still waiting and wondering why has nobody come to take me home. (͡๏̯͡๏) SALLY, hurt & scared, looking for a home!
( , ,)✫
´¯**´¯`✫ Limping on her right hind leg, infested with fleas, frightened out of her mind and having endured God knows what, Sally came into Brooklyn ACC on 7/6…friendly as can be and allowing all handling and petting. What could have happened to make this lovely two year-old so relieved to be in the ACC that she was actually glad to be there is unimaginable but into the ACC she went and she’s been there ever since waiting for someone to notice how special she is. Sally is such a wonderful girl -- so friendly and people-oriented that she scored a coveted AVERAGE RATING which allows her to be adopted through the ACC directly as well as through New Hope rescues. That's the good news because tonight, Sally needs a hero. Her young life depends on someone coming to her rescue and taking her home tomorrow and it cannot wait another moment. Will it be you? Will you be the one to save her life? A home is what she needs and it is what she absolutely must have by Saturday morning. Share Sally over and over and if you have the space in your home and the room in your heart to make a difference then do the right thing and save a life – adopt Sally NOW! Click on her pic to join her thread, ask for help if you need it; but please hurry! ~

*** TO ADOPT THIS ANIMAL THROUGH THE PUBLIC ADOPTION SITE, PLEASE GO TO THE FOLLOWING LINK AND SCROLL DOWN TO BOTTOM TO LOG IN AND RESERVE THE ANIMAL. THERE WILL BE A $50 DEPOSIT REQUIRED.http://www.nycacc.org/PublicAtRisk.htm ***

For more information on adopting please read the following: http://urgentpetsondeathrow.org/must-read/

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

JOKER'S owners couldn't have cared less the day they dumped him in a kill shelter to die..They wer...e moving and could not keep him. HE HAD A HEAVY LOCK ON HIS COLLAR TO MAKE HIS NECK STRONG????? OMG MONSTERS!!!!!!! . They walked away without so much as a tear in their eye... Joker is housebroken, good with kids but is aggressive toward cats. He didn't live with other dogs so we don't know how he will be in a home with a dog. At the shelter, he is friendly with them. Joker has a gentle soul, but he hates being at the shelter and is very stressed! He can look intimidating in his kennel and then you realize how soft and gentle he is...HE JUST DOESN'T KNOW WHY HIS OWNERS TOOK HIM ON A RIDE AND LEFT HIM THERE?????? The cage aggression he displays is concerning when you are on the other side of the door. However, when you get him out, he is a darling!!!!! THE CAGE IS KILLING HIS SOUL AND HAS ALREADY BROKEN HIS SPIRIT..... If you can help Joker through rescue, adoption, or fostering, please contact Daviess County Animal Control in OWENSBORO, KY at 270-685-8275 or send e-mail to dcacanimals@yahoo.com. HURRY PLEASE!!!!!!!! LAST DAY TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE SAVE SWEET OREO!!!!!!!!

Beagle of the Day: GIDGET!

Gender: Female
Approximate Age: 5 years 6 months
Status: Available
... About Gidget:
Gidget is a small, 5 1/2 year old female beagle. She is energetic and curious. She walks well on a leash and responds to basic commands (sit, down, come, stay, lay, high five). She is learning not to jump up to get food or treats and is making good progress. She likes to meet all people and does great with small kids. Gidget gets very excited and barks at cats so she probably shouldn't go to a home with cats.

Gidget would love to spend time with her future humans by snuggling with them on the couch and even in their bed at night. She currently sleeps in her own bed by her foster parent's bed. She is doing great on house training and knows she needs to go outside to go potty. She can go through the night without going out but needs to go out first thing in the morning. She sits at the door to tell you she wants to go outside.

Gidget has separation anxiety and cannot be crated. She has made progress with her anxiety with natural medication, but barks loudly when her foster parent leaves the house or when she sees an unknown dog from far away.

China was surrendered by her family and is concerned about her change in circumstances. She's a gorgeous girl who lived with one adult and one child, appears to have been well fed as her weight is perfect for her size, and her coat has a nice sheen to it. China is a bit shy, but happy to be going out for a walk to make new friends. Her leash manners are good and she's social and friendly. She was happy to place part of her body in my lap for some snuggles and love, giving me little kisses. When I stopped to talk to some people, she sat by my side, waiting patiently for me to finish my conversation. She's beautifully photogenic, but was not happy being tethered for photos. We're told that she lived with other dogs and likes to play, is friendly to all, and knows 'sit', 'down', 'shake' and 'stay'. Her former owner was asked if China had any behavior problems and we were told that she 'plays a lot'. I'm not sure I would call that a behavior problem! China is a young girl who needs exercise and stimulation and is looking for a family who can provide for her needs. In return you will have unconditional love from a sweetheart of a little girl. Ask to meet our China today!!

What a selfless and wonderful thing this woman did for this sweet dying dog by adopting her in her final hours to give her a loving send off over the Rainbow Bridge.

A woman named Lisa Jo Lucas in North Carolina heard about a shelter dog named Angel who was suffering from breast cancer and was in the final stages of her life.... Instead of leaving Angel to die alone at the shelter, Lucas adopted Angel and gave her one last special night before she was euthanized the next day. Read more from The Wilson Times:
"Nobody knows Angel’s past or how she got there by herself, but I have always had a tender spot for dogs and cats, the seniors especially,” said Lucas, who owns Lisa Jo’s DoggieTown, a grooming and day care business on Ward Boulevard in Wilson.
Lucas knew the dog she dubbed Angel had a grim prognosis. She made an appointment to have her euthanized, and she filled Angel’s final hours with companionship and comfort. "It was her last night here on Earth,” Lucas said. “I wanted it to be special.” Lucas placed blankets on the floor of the then-vacant office next door to DoggieTown, which she rented to expand her pet day care. Easy-listening music played as Lucas stroked Angel’s fur. "I made her a bed and I made me a bed,” Lucas recalled. “She slept. I slept a couple hours, believe it or not.” The next morning, Lucas brought Angel to Dr. Carrie Raymond at the Wilson Veterinary Hospital. "We prayed over her, and it was the most beautiful, peaceful thing,” Lucas said. “I just kissed her nose when Dr. Raymond gave her that shot. As she was leaving us, I could almost see her running over that rainbow bridge. She was free of that cancer.” Though Angel was in her life a short time, the dog has a permanent place in Lucas’s heart. She keeps Angel’s ashes in a wooden box and the dog’s paw print on a plaster disc at DoggieTown.
Thanks to Lucas, Angel was able to enjoy a few moments of warmth before passing on. Beautiful story. Click here for the full article.
