Senator Markey, Safety and Fraud Enforcement (SAFE) for Seafood Act, Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act (S. 511),

Massachusetts is truly blessed with 2 great Democratic Senators who stand tall for ALL Americans.

Recently, I sent an email to Senator Markey regarding GMO labeling and his response is below:

Thank you for contacting me regarding genetically modified foods. It was good to hear from you.
Genetic engineering offers great potential to increase food production at a time when our land and water resources are constrained and our farmers are trying to cope with the impacts of climate change. However, any technology used in our food needs to go through a rigorous science and risk based review process to ensure that these scientific advancements do not have unintended consequences on public health or the environment. It should be safe to eat, and should not alter the ecosystem by taking over indigenous species.
I have long advocated for strengthening the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) resources and authority to ensure our foods are safe. I have introduced legislation in the previous three Congresses that would give FDA more authority and transparency in reviewing the types of materials used in food packaging and to get chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) out of our children's food.
While in serving in the US House of Representatives I authored and introduced the Safety and Fraud Enforcement (SAFE) for Seafood Act, a bipartisan bill to combat rampant seafood fraud, a nationwide epidemic that cheats fishermen and consumers while posing health risks to pregnant mothers and others. I have cosponsored similar legislation in the Senate.
I am proud to be a cosponsor of the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act (S. 511) that was introduced on February 12, 2015 by Senator Barbara Boxer and was referred to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. I will continue to support and closely monitor this piece of legislation.
I believe that consumers have the right to know where their food comes from, how it is produced and what may have been added to it along the way to their kitchen table.
Thank you again for contacting me about this issue. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
