Several pipeline execs maxed out Charlie Baker donations
Gov.-elect Charlie Baker accepted Election Day donations from a number of high-ranking execs at Kinder Morgan — the Houston company pushing to build a natural gas pipeline across Massachusetts — even though he has publicly opposed its controversial proposal.
“They’re trying to sway the opinion of each of the six governors in New England,” pipeline opponent Cathy Kristofferson said of the company brass. “I’m sure they’re hoping to sway the Republican governor to be more amenable to their plan. (I’d tell) the new governor, just like the old governor, to stick to the commitments of the commonwealth in reducing emissions and continuing work around sustainable energy.”Five Kinder Morgan officials each gave the maximum $500 to Baker’s campaign Nov. 4, the same day he defeated Attorney General Martha Coakley. They included the company’s chairman and CEO, Richard Kinder; its chief financial officer, Kimberly Dang, and chief operating officer, Steven Kean; the president of its east region, Kimberly Watson; and J. Curtis Moffatt, an attorney for Kinder Morgan.

Porter Ranch Methane Leak Spreads Across LA’s San Fernando Valley
It now looks like the catastrophic Porter Ranch gas leak, which has spewed more than 83,000 metric tons of noxious methane for nearly three months, has spread across Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander called on the Southern California Gas Co. to extend residential relocation assistance to residents in Granada Hills, Chatsworth and Northridge who live near the Aliso Canyon gas leak above Porter Ranch. These residents reported symptoms related to the exposure of natural gas such as nausea, vomiting, headaches and respiratory problems.
This latest development compounds with a new analysis from Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET). The Cambridge-based nonprofit sent Boston University Professor Nathan Phillips and Bob Ackley of Gas Safety to take methane measurements around the San Fernando Valley for several days and their findings were disturbing.
As the Los Angeles Daily News wrote, “the researchers recorded elevated levels of the main ingredient in natural gas—10 miles away from the nation’s largest gas leak.”
“It’s not just in Porter Ranch, it’s going all the way across the [San Fernando] Valley,” Ackley told Inside Climate News.
According to HEET, the researchers drove a high precision GIS-enabled natural gas analyzer down the roads around the gas leak to create a comprehensive map of the leak around San Fernando Valley. The red on the map indicates where they drove and the levels of methane they found is shown by the height of the peaks.
Their monitors showed methane levels at 3.4 parts per billion, about twice the level of natural clean air, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. Another measurement showed 127 ppm, or an astounding 67 times above normal.
“Whatever else may be in the gas—benzene, toluene, xylene—that is what people may be breathing,” Phillips told Inside Climate News. “Even though we’re not measuring things other than methane, there is a legitimate concern that there is that other nasty stuff in there.”
As Inside Climate News observed: “The findings challenge assurances from the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the regional air pollution control agency, and the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment that the leak hasn’t increased residents’ exposure to toxic gases.”
Dozens of public health and environmental advocates and experts will rally at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington, DC tomorrow to press for federal action on the Porter Ranch leak.
Friday’s rally, organized by members from Food & Water Watch and other organizations, will ask the U.S. EPA to intercede and permanently shut down operations at a blown-out gas storage facility in California.
Southern Caliifornia Gas Co. has evacuated more than 2,000 residents living near the leak since October. Porter Ranch was officially declared a state of emergency by California Gov. Jerry Brown, however, advocates have criticized his slow response to the escalating public health crisis.
“For months, Governor Brown and California authorities sat on their hands as this gas blowout crisis deepened and scores got sick,” Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hautersaid. “Now it’s a matter of ‘too little, too late’ from the governor, and the people of Porter Ranch are desperate for federal intervention to end this catastrophe and ensure it never happens again.”
On Saturday, in Granada Hills, California, hundreds of residents of Porter Ranch will rally and testify at the second hearing on a stipulated Order for Abatement—which requires a company operating out of compliance to take specific actions or to shut down its operation to come into compliance—over the Porter Ranch Gas Leak.
Southern California Gas Co. said in a statement that methane leakage has been slowly falling. Estimates by the California Air Resources Board showed an estimated 60-percent reduction from peak levels in late November.
The gas company is currently drilling a relief well in an effort to plug the leak, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. The effort, however, could take months.
“We’ve drilled to a depth of approximately 7,000 feet (and) we have to drill to a depth of over 8,000 feet, and remain on schedule to complete this process between late February and late March,” company spokesman Raul Gordillo said.

I’m writing to you today to announce the death of the Republican Party. It is no longer a living, vital, animate organization. It has been replaced by warring tribes of rightwing zealots – evangelicals opposed to abortion, gay marriage, and science; libertarians opposed to any government constraint on private behavior; market fundamentalists convinced the “free market” can do no wrong; corporate and Wall Street titans seeking bailouts, corporate welfare, tax cuts, and deregulation; right-wing billionaires wanting more of the nation’s wealth than they own already; and white working-class Trumpoids who love Donald and hate Muslims, blacks, and Mexicans.
Each tribe has its own organization, its own sources of campaign funding, its own ideology, and its own candidates. What’s left is a lifeless shell called the Republican Party, but the Grand Old Party inside the shell is no more.
I, for one, regrets its passing. Our nation needs political parties to connect up different groups of Americans and to sift through prospective candidates. Without a Republican Party, nothing stands between us and a bunch of liars, bigots, egomaniacs, and creeps who decide on their own to seek the Republican nomination president.
What do you think?

Hillary's Iowa MEAN SCREAM: "NEVER, EVER come to pass!" The choice we face.
Saturday Jan 30, 2016
Hillary Clinton had a moment yesterday afternoon in Iowa; it wasn’t the moment you were expecting. It was a Mean Scream. Unlike the Dean Scream in 2004, there was substance behind this one, and it’s not so good. As she spoke to a crowd of about probably 100 or so people, Hillary got very loud and impassioned. The only thing is, she wasn’t about to deliver a blistering defense of progressive ideals; no, she was going to RALLY AGAINST the ideas we hold dear. Hillary gave an impassioned OFFENSE against the idea of single payer- Bernie’s Medicare for all plan- and screamed into the microphone about how she doesn’t want to thrust the nation into a “terrible, terrible, national debate” and how single payer will “NEVER, EVER COME TO PASS!” You think I’m exaggerating? WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
Folks, this is supposed to be the frontrunner of the Democratic Party, the party of FDR, of JFK, of LBJ and yes the party of OBAMA! This is the party of Yes, we can; NOT No, we can’t!
Decades ago there were those who said that a time where a woman would be able to have her voice heard and her vote counted would never come to pass, it did.
Decades ago there were those who said a black girl and a white boy would never be friends and share the same classroom, that desegregation would never ever come to pass, it did.
Years ago there were those who said the love of a man shared with another man, or a woman with another woman would never be recognized under the unity we call marriage and could never come to pass, and it DID.
And why did it happen? Because we fought. Because we stood up for our progressive values in the midst of great opposition and we were even willing to lose as long as we stood up for what was right. Not every battle was won, but we changed lots of hearts and minds on the way.
Hillary's Mean Scream is more than just a gaffe, it is a cold reflection of her vision and her ideology. What this video shows to me is someone who is fundamentally out of touch with the wants and needs of the American people and with the direction we want to take our party in the future. In Hillary’s Democratic party, single payer is not a dream to work toward, but something that is completely off the table. In Hillary’s party we must only look at the present calculations rather than the future long term benefits. In Hillary’s party external forces dictate the values we hold dear, rather than the fundamental belief that equality and opportunity are a right for all.
The Mean Scream shows me that we face a stark choice as we approach the primary. Do we settle for the current path laid out in front of us by corporate interests, focus groups, and big money— a path of stagnation, trickle down economics, and needless war? Or do we blaze our own path— a path of long term sustainability, a renewed middle class, and where the people reassert their authority over the billionaire class. I’m going with the latter and voting for Bernie Sanders because the future of our party depends on it, and I hope you all will join me too.
Kochs Demand Walker Return Nine Hundred Million Dollars
SATIRE FOLKS!
MADISON, WISCONSIN
The Borowitz Report)—Just minutes after the Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker dropped out of the Republican Presidential race, the billionaire Koch brothers demanded that he return the nine hundred million dollars they had allocated to his campaign.
For the Koch brothers, who purchased Walker earlier this year, the demand for a full cash refund reflected how badly their relationship with the formerly promising candidate had deteriorated.
According to an aide familiar with the phone conversation between Walker and the Kochs, the industrialist brothers were “not amused” that the Governor had blown through millions of their dollars to become the choice of only one per cent of likely Republican voters.
“I’m not going to sugarcoat it,” the aide said. “The Kochs were pissed.”
After “tearing into Scott” for nearly thirty minutes, the Kochs reportedly demanded that Walker return their money “no later than midnight Friday.”
“B-but where am I going to come up with that kind of dough?” Walker asked.
On that note, the aide said, the Kochs hung up the phone, leaving Governor Walker staring out into the middle distance.

Hillary Clinton Gets $13 Million From Health Industry, Now Says Single-Payer Will "Never, Ever Come To Pass"
BY DAVID SIROTA @DAVIDSIROTA ON 01/30/16
Closing out her Iowa campaign, Hillary Clinton on Friday declared that the Medicare-for-all proposal pushed by her Democratic primary opponent and manyliberal groups will “never, ever come to pass.” The statement came weeks after anew poll showed most Americans support the idea. Her declaration was a reversal of her position two decades ago — which came before she received millions of dollars of campaign cash from the health industry.
Clinton’s comments, which were made during an appearance at Grand View University in Iowa, were aimed at Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has long championed the kind of government administered health care system used by many major industrialized nations. Of Sanders’ proposal, Clinton said on Friday: "People who have health emergencies can't wait for us to have a theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass." The Kaiser Family Foundation’s December 2015 tracking poll found that 58 percent of Americans support expanding Medicare to cover everyone.
Clinton slammed the push for single-payer even though some of the major labor unions supporting her campaign have long cited that goal as a top legislative priority. Her comments also contrast with what she herself said in 1994 during remarks to the Lehman Brothers Health Corporation. As CBS News notes, back then she declared that a single-payer system was all but inevitable, saying: “I believe that by the year 2000 we will have a single payer system. I don’t think it’s — I don’t even think it’s a close call politically ... it will be such a huge popular issue in the sense of populist issue that even if it’s not successful the first time, it will eventually be.”
Between that declaration and her now saying single-payer can never pass, Clinton has vacuumed in roughly $13.2 million from sources in the health sector, according to data compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. That includes$11.2 million from the sector when Clinton was a senator and $2 million from health industry sources during her 2016 presidential campaign. In a 2006 story about her relationship with the health industry, the New York Times noted that during her Senate reelection campaign, she was "receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from doctors, hospitals, drug manufacturers and insurers" and had become "the No. 2 recipient of donations from the industry." The Intercept also reported that from 2013 to 2015, Clinton received more than $2.8 million in speaking fees from the health industry.
Clinton and her daughter Chelsea have suggested that Sanders plan would dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which Sanders voted for. Sanders has disputed that and has also disputed that passing a single-payer system is impossible if a president pushes it.
In 2014, that view got a boost from then-Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin. He told the Hill newspaper that year that when it came to creating a Medicare-for-all system or a government-run health care option in the Affordable Care Act, “We had the votes in ’09. We had a huge majority in the House, we had 60 votes in the Senate.”
Democrats, however, are not expected to have such numbers in Congress after the 2016 election.
This story was updated to include data about health industry speaking fees.

How MENTALLY DISTURBED is Jeb Bush?
Believe it Or Not – Jeb Bush Sinks Lower Than Trump and Cruz
By Rmuse on
Unless an American is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative, or disaffected liberal, they likely believe the current crop of Republican presidential candidates have sunk to unfathomable depths of contemptible acts and statements. Of course the first names on that disgusting list are Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, but despite the truly hideous statement they have made over the course of the primary thus far, they have been outdone by one Jeb! Bush. It is true that Bush’s campaign for the Republican nomination is on life support, if it is not already dead, but that is no excuse for his latest campaign ad; except to remind Americans how nasty Republicans are when they are in power.
Apparently Bush’s campaign super PAC is awash with millions they have to divest and good old Jeb! spent a small fortune to remind Americans just how dysfunctional the GOP is, and just how much they really love big government overreach to interfere with Americans’ lives when they pander to the religious right. The Jeb! ad also should remind Americans that this current group of Republicans are not unique and simply perpetuating the party’s dirty pandering to their dirty base.
In the campaign ad, after boasting he is a National Rifle Association hero, Jeb goes to a morbid place and touts his bona fides in protecting life. In particular, he boasts about his part in protecting the life of a poor woman who had been in a 15-year long “medically irreversible, persistent vegetative state” with feeding and breathing tubes keeping her heart beating and blood flowing. Some Americans may recall what was a dark time for America when “big-government” Republicans from sea-to-shining-sea, including then-president of the United States, George W. Bush, demonstrated outrageous big-government overreach and interference in attempting to keep Terry Schiavo alive; she was technically “alive,” but functionally “dead.”
Bush’s ad is sickening and will likely repulse any even half-decent American. In the ad Jeb! claims that while he was running Florida he “fought time and again for the right to life” with an accompanying image of someone leaning over Schiavo, lying in a helpless vegetative state in her hospital bed. This ploy is actually something that Bush believes will “shock and awe” the Republican base to shift their undying support from Cruz and Trump to his campaign. However, for most Americans it will likely remind them that to appease the “religious life” movement, Republicans will use federal government authority to “directly contravene” into the private lives of Americans.
As noted here, in order to bolster his credibility with the forced-birth crowd, Bush seriously felt he had to remind Americans how he and Republicans used the government to “force the irreversibly and profoundly brain-damaged Schiavo to cling to life;” in direct contravention of what her husband explained were her own desires. Remember, it was the pro-life evangelicals demanding that Schiavo be kept resuscitated at all costs, no matter how much pain it caused to others; particularly the woman’s grieving husband.
Terry Schiavo’s husband, Mike, reacted to Bush’s morbid campaign ad like any decent human being and was “understandably horrified” that Bush would “exploit his wife’s suffering.” Mike Schiavo should know better after what Republicans like the Bushes put him through. Mr. Schiavo said,
“It is simply disgusting that Jeb Bush and his super PAC would exploit my wife’s tragedy for his crude political gain. Shame on Jeb Bush.
Using his disgraceful intervention in our family’s private trauma to advance his political career shows that he has learned nothing. He’s proud of the fact that he used the machinery of government to keep a person alive through extraordinary artificial means — contrary to the orders of the court that were based on the court’s determination, made over six years of litigation, that doing so would be against her wishes.
What the campaign video shows is that if he ever got his hands on the power of government again, he would do the same thing again, maybe next time to your family.”
Despite the horrific hubris of Republicans running the federal government and Florida imposing its “twisted sense of religious values” on all Americans, Bush knows his appeal to morbidity and gross government intervention into Americans’ personal lives will resonate with many in the Republican base. At the time, while Florida’s Republican governor, Republican legislature and America’s Republican Congress and Republican president attempted to wield control over another person’s life, and death decision, polling revealed that the overwhelming majority of American people backed her husband and said that politicians should butt out of the family’s personal decisions and conflict.
It is worth noting that Republicans who still claim that their greatest asset is “keeping government” out of Americans’ lives are liars when it fits into their machinations to appease their religious base. Democrats would be wise to seize on Jeb Bush’s horrific ad to expose the GOP’s intent to overreach in controlling Americans’ lives when they have power. For dog’s sake they spent the past seven years have going to great lengths to interfere with plenty of Americans’ lives when they are not in complete power.
Most American women, and the LGBT community, already know that there are no lengths too far for Republicans to interfere, and control, Americans’ who do not comply with “social conservatives” worldview. Maybe with Jeb! sinking to a new low that Cruz and Trump can only sit back and admire, the rest of the people will be reminded exactly how extreme Republicans are, and can be, in using big government to control Americans’ lives; even those who are not really “alive.”
One really never thought Jeb Bush could out-extreme the likes of Cruz and Trump, but by resurrecting a morbid, and shameful, Republican abomination even when his campaign is in its death throes, it appears Jeb Bush is as extreme and pathetic as the rest of the Republican field.
